Age 65, of Alexander, died peacefully Sunday morning February 5, 2017 at her home due to complications from pulmonary artery hypertension and scleroderma. She was born November 3, 1951 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Edgar and Betty (Green) Chapell, also preceded in death by siblings, Judy Ullum and June Chapell.   

Jo Ann grew up in Byron and graduated from Byron Bergen High School in 1969 and from Genesee Community College in 1971 with an A.A.S. degree. She worked at the former St. Jerome Hospital until 1974 as a radiology transcriptionist and later that year moved to Lakeland, FL. Jo Ann enjoyed a wonderful career as a medical transcriptionist for the next 37 years at the Watson Clinic, retiring in 2012. A former member of the Ladies of the Moose, where she held several officer positions and the College of Regents, member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, where she served as president, was an avid bowler, enjoyed casino trips and in 2016 moved back to Alexander full time. 

Surviving is her loving husband of 41 years, John "Mike" Laney of Alexander; beloved daughters, Christine (Kevin) Salzlein of FL and their daughter, Myya; Jennifer (Keith) Brooks of GA and their son, Max; brother, Terry Chapell of NY and sister, Joyce Chapell of FL; mother-in-law, Joanne Laney of Alexander along with several nieces, nephews and many loving friends in Lakeland, FL and Alexander.  

The Laney family will be present from 5-8 p.m. on Friday February 10 at the MICHAEL S. TOMASZEWSKI FUNERAL & CREMATION CHAPEL, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, NY 14020. Please join Jo Ann's family to celebrate her Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. Saturday Feb. 11 at St. Joachim & Anne Parish 50 East Ave. Attica, NY 14011. She will be laid to rest in Byron Cemetery and in lieu of flowers memorials in her memory are suggested to Crossroads House 11 Liberty Street Batavia or a charity of the donor's choice.
