Carole J. Pettinella

By Ronald Konieczny

Carole J. Pettinella of Batavia went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday (Nov. 14, 2013) at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Williamsville after a long illness.

She was born in Batavia on Oct. 31, 1934 to the late Joseph and Mary Gugino Barone. She graduated from Batavia High School in 1952 and married her high school sweetheart Angelo Pettinella on Feb. 20, 1954 at St. Anthony’s Church. In the 1970’s, Carole worked as manager of the Short Stop convenience store and Henry’s Restaurant, and as office assistant at Beltone, all in Batavia.

Carole accepted Jesus as her Savior in 1976, and was active in the church, participating in Bible studies, seminars and evangelical crusades. A member of Women’s Aglow International, she will be remembered as a strong witness for Christ through her compassion for others and through her angelic praise and worship.  Her favorite verse was Psalm 27:1 – “The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?”

“Nana,” as she was known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, loved spending time with her family, and was especially proud of all their accomplishments. Family and friends loved Carole’s delicious meals and desserts; she truly enjoyed cooking and baking, and generously shared with all who came to their home. She also was an avid bowler, having participated in leagues at Mancuso Bowling Center in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. She enjoyed spending time with her girlfriends, whether they were praising the Lord, dining or shopping.

She was predeceased by her son, David (July 22, 2007); grandson, David Jr., (Aug. 30, 2005), and sister-in-law, Judith Barone (July 20, 2008).

Carole is survived by her loving husband of nearly 60 years, Angelo; son and daughter-in-law, Michael (Wendy) Pettinella of Batavia; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas (Betsy) Pettinella, of Batavia; brother, Anthony (Marge) Barone of Batavia; grandchildren, Teressa Pettinella, Leanna (Dan) DiRisio, Bryan Pettinella, Adam Pettinella, Jennifer Cudney and Kelly Cudney, all of Batavia, and Philip Pettinella and Matthew (Meghan) Chartraw, both of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Christian Peek, Jenae Colkey, Haylee Thornley, Vincent DiRisio, Luciana DiRisio, Brycen Pettinella and Gage Pettinella, all of Batavia; nieces, Jodi (Scott) Fisher of Oakfield, Suzanne Barone, Toni (Ron) Funke, Amy Barone and Nicole (Rich) Boyce, all of Batavia; great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

As per Carole’s wishes, there will be no prior visitation and the family will gather to celebrate her life at their convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Carole’s name can be made to Kaleida Health Foundation, 1260 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, NY, 14209, or to The 700 Club, 977 Centerville Turnpike, Virginia Beach, Va., 23463.
