Ambrose J. Ryan

Ambrose J. Ryan of Webster, formerly of Elba, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at age 85.  Predeceased by his parents, Clarence & Irene (Rogers) Ryan; grandson, Clarence Z. Ryan; infant sister, Mary Ryan; brother, LCDR, USN Roger Ryan; and nephew, Patrick E. Ryan.  He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret “Peg” (Schlosser) Ryan; children, Michael (Brenda) Ryan of Austin, TX; Dr. Mark (Susan) Ryan of Geneva; Jane (Dr. Joseph) Vacca of Telford, PA; and Dr. Gregory (Marian) Ryan of Webster;  grandchildren, Daniel & Kevin Ryan; Dr. Melissa (Dr. Peter) Mroz & Stephen  Ryan; Joshua, Dr. Kaitlin, Patrick & Rosemary Vacca; Ambrose T., Martin  & Deaglan Ryan; great-grandson, Ryan Mroz;  brothers, Henry Ryan and Francis P. Ryan, M.D.; sister-in-law, Joanne (William)  Errett; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ambrose received a B.S. from Fordham University and an M.S. from Albany State.  He taught science in the Batavia City Schools for 35 years, retiring as Department Chairman in 1991.  He also coached the freshman football team.  He was an Air Force Veteran, life member of the Elba Fire Department, former Trustee and Mayor of Elba.  He faced life cheerfully with Parkinson’s Disease for over 25 years.  He loved singing and was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church Choir and the Elba Elegants.  After moving to Webster, he enjoyed singing at Mass at St. Rita Church and was a member of the Webster Senior Singers.  He also enjoyed playing bridge, fishing and sports.  He was a longtime fan of high school sports in Elba and loved watching his grandchildren’s sporting events. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.

His family will receive friends on THURSDAY 4-7 PM at Profetta Funeral Chapel (1650 Empire Blvd., Webster) and FRIDAY 4-7 PM at  Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Co., Inc. (329-333 West Main St., Batavia).  On SATURDAY, please join his family at St. Padre Pio Parish at Our Lady of Fatima Church (65 South Main St., Elba, NY 14058) for his Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM.  Interment Maple Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to National Parkinson Foundation, PO Box 23204, Rochester, NY 14692 in Ambrose’s memory, or Masses may be offered at St. Rita Church in Webster or St. Padre Pio Parish.
