Richard J. Doktor

Richard J. Doktor, 88 of Corfu, died Tuesday (September 16, 2014). 

He was born in Cheektowaga, NY on June 19, 1926, a son of the late Martin and Celia Symanski Doktor. 

He was the husband of the late Ramona Schmigel Doktor.

Mr. Doktor was a US Navy Veteran during W.W. II and served aboard the USS Simpson and the USS Broome as a Boatswains Mate having received the American Theatre Medal and Victory Medal upon his Honorable Discharge.   He was a welder by trade and started Doktor’s Welding in Corfu before continuing his career at Harrison Radiator in Lockport. He volunteered extensively at the US Naval Park in Buffalo repairing ships.  He was active in local politics in his younger years and served with the Town of Pembroke Zoning Board of Appeals.  He was a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church in Corfu, member and Past Commander of the VFW Post 9000 in Corfu, member of the American Legion Post 332 in Batavia and the oldest member of the Joint Veterans Honor Guard of Genesee County.

Surviving are his children: Douglas (Sonia) Doktor of Corfu, Cindy (Richard) Chilson of Clarendon, NY, Dinene Hancock of So. Carolina and Dawn Murray of California.  Daughter in law, Mary (late Kevin Mark) Doktor of Corfu.  Grandchildren, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.  Brother of Alice (Vince) Berardi of Lockport and Bernard (Catherine) Doktor of Corfu.  Brother in law of Jean Doktor, and Marion Doktor.  Brother of the late: Florence Wyder, Alfred Doktor, Henry Doktor, William Doktor, Rita Gostomski and Norman Doktor.

Friends of the family may express their thoughts, condolences and fond memories with the family at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, LLC., 2 BOGUE AVE., BATAVIA on Thursday from 6 – 8 PM and Friday from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 PM .  A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10 AM at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, 18 W. Main St., Corfu, with Rev. James Fugle as Celebrant.  Full military honors will follow.  Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Corfu.
