Donald H. 'George' Anawald

By Lisa Ace

Donald H. “George” Anawald, 86, of Corfu, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at the Buffalo VA Medical Center.

He was born on April 2, 1933 in Batavia, the only son of the late Howard and Florence Prince Anawald.

Don was the Vice President of Corfu High School Class of 1951, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He served in the United States Air Force and was the Quarter Master of the Joseph M. Collins V.F.W. in Alexander from 1957-1969 and a Life Member. Don worked for Eaton, Yale & Towne and then O&K Trojan in Batavia for 31 years. He was the only retiree of Majic Corrugated in Batavia. Don has been an active member of the Corfu United Presbyterian Church since 1946.

Don’s favorite pastimes were driving his tractors, tinkering and fixing things, planting, growing, canning and giving away the produce of his 3 big, bountiful gardens. He enjoyed collecting and selling the sweet chestnuts from the trees his Uncle Frank planted in the 1940’s. Don loved to go to garage sales with his daughter April.

Don would do anything for anyone and was always helpful. He whistled while in the garden, shopping and when happy, which was most of the time. Don had a fabulous sense of humor. He will be deeply missed.

Surviving is his beloved wife of 56 years, Joanna Sheroke Anawald; his 5 precious daughters, Addie (Bradley) Long, Carrie (James) McMullen, Valerie (Keith) Mutka, April Anawald and Stefanie (Ted) Smeltz; devoted Pap-paps to 7 grandchildren, Zachary and Spencer Long, Nicholas and Catherine McMullen, Tyler and Emily Mutka and Alex O’Grady. Several grand-fur babies and cousins also survive. He will be fondly remembered as “Dad” to so many of his daughter’s friends who knew and loved him.
