Elmer J. Heiman

Elmer J. Heiman, 92 of Darien Center, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 26, 2020 at United Memorial Medical Center with his children by his side. Elmer was born May 3, 1928 at home to the late Walter (Lillian Berlein) Heimann. He is preceded in death by brothers Richard and George Heimann, sisters Irene Hahn, Marie Welker, Marie Heiman’s daughter Deborah Shaffer and a grandson Kevin Heiman.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 in Germany. He was a member of the Joseph M. Collins Post 6239. Mr. Heiman was employed by Westinghouse for 37 years and later worked for the NYS Thruway Authority until he retired.

Because of his love of Darien he became active in the Darien Fire Department as a Volunteer Firefighter, First Aid Instructor and EMT. His passion for history led him to seek appointment as Town Historian where he served for 52 years. He became active in town politics serving as Councilman and on the County Planning Board.

He attended the Darien United Methodist Church. Mr. Heiman enjoyed weekly card games and Euchre tournaments. He will be remembered for the fun times he shared with his grandchildren, his wit and sense of humor and his ability to fix anything with duct tape.

Elmer is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marie (Heintz) Heiman, his children Melissa (Jerry) Allsup of Alaska; Philip (Angela) Heiman of Pavilion; Beth (Bruce) Clingerman of North Rose; Marie’s sons James (Gail) Richert of MI; Daniel (Kathy) Richert of FL; siblings Marian Tiberio of Holley and Ralph (Sylvia) Heimann of Rochester; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 from 2 to 6 PM at Marley Funeral Home, LLC 135 Main Street, Attica, NY 14011. A 6:00 PM Funeral Service will immediately follow at the Funeral Home. An 11:00 AM Graveside Service will take place on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at Darien Cemetery.
