WILLIAM M. HYNES

William M. Hynes, age 77, of Elba, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Hynes was born August 27, 1938 in Batavia, the son of the late William and Doris Watts Hynes.

A graduate of Notre Dame High School and Rochester Business Institute, Bill was a member of Padre Pio Parish – Our Lady of Fatima Worship Site and he was a First Degree member of the Knights of Columbus in LeRoy. He also served on the Elba Town Board for seven years.

Bill dedicated his life to the fire service in Genesee County. He served with the LeRoy Volunteer Fire Department from 1961-1968. From there he served with the Town of Batavia Fire Department from 1968-1980 serving as chief in 1978 and 1979. He is a current member of the Town of Elba Fire Department, joining in 1980 and served as chief from 1990-2003. He served as president of the board of directors of the Elba Fire Department from 2004-2013. He was also a life member of the Western New York Fireman’s Association and the New York State Fire Chief’s Association. Bill served on the Genesee County Mutual Aid Advisory Board, where he served as chairman for two years.

Bill received numerous accolades from local assemblymen, town officials, village officials and senators for his many years of dedicated service to the fire community. January 25, 2003,  was declared “Bill Hynes Day” in Elba.

Known for his quick wit and humor, those who knew him will remember his classic one-liners.

He is predeceased by his wife, Rita Reiner Hynes who passed away in 1996 and his son, Michael Edward Hynes who passed away in 1976. 

He is survived by his wife, Donna (Gould) Hynes, whom he married January 30, 2004; two daughters, Sandi (Tom) Boryczka  and  Beth Hynes, both  of Elba; his step-son, Kevin Finucane of Bergen and four grandchildren, Ashley, Jennifer, Emily and Austin.

Friends may call on Friday, September 11th, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, where his fireman’s service will be held at 7 p.m. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 12th at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia. Father Thaddeus Bocianowski, rector of Padre Pio Parish will celebrate Bill’s Mass. He will be laid to rest in Grand View Cemetery, Batavia.
