MICHAEL P. FIORELLA ~ of Batavia, Age 66, died peacefully Friday morning July 20, 2018 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital following a courageous battle with ALS. Mike was born February 26, 1952, the son of the late Philip and Monica (Szczesny) Fiorella, he is also predeceased by his brother, Louis Fiorella; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Fiorella and brother-in-law, John Pickert.

Mike worked for Genesee County for many years as well as working at Terry Hills Golf Course in the Pro Shop. He was an avid bowler having achieved the perfect 300 on a couple occasions and had a pretty good golf game as well.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy (Pickert) Fiorella of Batavia; brother, Philip Fiorella of Rochester; mother-in-law, Marion Pickert; step children, Colleen (Tom) Kemp and Ronnie Odessa all of Batavia; grandchildren, Carissa (Brett) Doward, Rylie Odessa and Bryce Odessa; great-grandson, Brett Doward; sisters-in-law, Chris Fiorella, Cindy McDonald, Pat Christini, JoAnn Ficarella; brother-in-law, Donald Pickert; nephews, Brian Fiorella, Mark (Julie) Fiorella, Phillip (Christine) Fiorella; nieces, Melissa Fiorella and Tammy (Dave) LaVeck along with several great nieces and nephews.

There is no prior visitation, please join Mike's family to Celebrate his Mass of Christian Burial 11am Tuesday July 24 at Ascension Parish corner of Swan & Sumner Sts with Rev. Walter John Szczesny Officiating. He will be laid to rest in Grand View Cemetery, and in lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the family that will be  shared with the various organizations who assisted Mike during his illness.

LeRoy ~ Thomas N. Hassett, age 90, of Platt Avenue, passed away Friday morning (July 20, 2018) in the loving presence of his family.

     He was born June 10, 1928 in Rochester, a son of the late Thomas M. and Mary Fisher Hassett.

     Tom was a very loving and caring person, who was devoted to his family and his faith.  He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a member of Our Lady of Mercy Parish, a 25 gallon blood donor over his lifetime and an avid reader.

     He is survived by his wife, Alice Stefani; his children, Valerie (Wayne) Blaisdell of Scottsville, Christine (Douglas) Frew of NC and Neil (Elisa) Hassett of CA; step children, Marcia (Timothy) McMullen of Castile, Mark (Rita) McKeon of Rochester, John (Kathy) McKeon III of NC, Patricia Iamon of Byron, Robert (Tammy) Stefani Jr. of LeRoy, Deborah (Larry) Reeves of MN, Laura (Douglas) Platt of Byron and Allen (Cindy) Stefani of LeRoy; siblings, Gerald (Sharon) Hassett of Rochester, Robert (Patricia) Hassett of Caledonia and Marie (Robert) Sickles of FL; sisters-in-law, Joyce Hassett of CA and Carol Ann Hassett of Rochester; special nephew, Glenn (Deborah) Sickles of Scottsville; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews and dear friends.  He was predeceased by his wives, Carol Hassett and Eleanor Hassett and brothers, Paul Hassett and Edward Hassett.

LeRoy ~ Terry P. "Tuba" McQuillen, age 62, formerly of Fredonia and Rutland, VT, passed away peacefully at home early Wednesday morning (July 18, 2018).

    

He was born August 18, 1955 in Batavia, a son of Margaret "Peg" Chambers McQuillen and the late Robert McQuillen.

     Terry was a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Batavia and his work eventually took him away to Fredonia and Rutland, VT, before returning back to his home town.  He had a deep love for his family and enjoyed playing cards, golf and going to the racetrack.  He was also an avid NY Yankees fan.  Over the last 3 years as Tuba bravely battled cancer , he never once lost his wickedly funny sense of humor , his generous spirit to others, or his positive outlook on life.

     He is survived by his mother, Margaret "Peg" McQuillen of LeRoy; his siblings, Patricia (David) Daansen of LeRoy, Mary Lynn (Richard) Jacko of Pittsburgh, PA, Stephen (Sheila) McQuillen of Stafford, Peter (Judy) McQuillen of LeRoy, Timothy (Sue) McQuillen of Byron and Amy (Jeff) Sturm of Erie, PA; his children, Joseph (Becky) McQuillen of FL and Jennifer (Jerod) Richardson-Crouch of FL, and their children; good friend, Maxine Balch of Rutland, VT, along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.  He was predeceased by his father, Robert in 1996.

  Alex A. Neubert, of Batavia died peacefully on July 21 at the age of 83.  He was born on September 1, 1934 in Batavia New York to the late William Albert and Louise (Kisella) Neubert. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary D. Neubert, his sisters Irene (Edward) Brenkus, Mary (Dominic) Mancuso, Blanche (Robert) Schrock, and Frances Neubert, and his brothers John (Mabel), Julius (Roslyn) and Frank (Gloria).

He is survived by his son, Alex Neubert (Jay Sackett) of Rochester; his in-laws Frank (Bunny) D'Aurizio, Nicholas (Robin) D'Aurizio and Anthony (Connie) D'Aurizio, and several nieces and nephews. 

After high school, Alex served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.  Upon return home, he worked briefly for Pepsi Cola Bottling Corp. and then went to work for R. R. Gamble where, after many years on the road as a salesman for the company, he and his business partners, Frank Markwica and Gerald Tomaszewski Sr., owned and operated the business until it was sold in 1997.

He was a lifelong member of Resurrection Church (St. Joseph's) in Batavia.  He enjoyed nothing more than “being out on the course” and was a longtime member of Stafford County Club, along with numerous social clubs including the Polish Falcons and the former St. Nicolas Social Club.  In his younger days he enjoyed weeknight bowling leagues, and weekend fishing and hunting adventures with his brothers-in-law.  The Yankees were his team, through the good years and the bad.  More recently “Uncle Alex” could often be found most afternoon’s at his favorite stomping grounds enjoying time with his friends.  Anyone who knew him, knew that he loved life and lived it to the fullest.

  John F. Gebel, 88, of North Java passed away on Thursday July 19, 2018 at Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home in Perry. He was born April 26, 1930 in North Java, NY to the late Leo J. and Catherine M (Perl) Gebel.  John is predeceased by his wife; Sharon Gebel; two sisters Evelyn (Frances) Brunner of North Java and Theresa (late Roy) George of North Java.  

He was a life-long dairy farmer in North Java with a passion for baseball and music.  

John is survived his children; David (Robin) Grover of Wilmington, NC., Kenneth Grover of Java Center and Susan Grover of Warsaw; three sisters Mary (late Nicholas) Perry of Sheldon, Ann Marie (late Robert) Dimick of Bennington and Clarine (Raymond) Meisner of Bennington; 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

SPC ALBERT A. SWIFT USArmy (Retired) ~ Age 84, of East Bethany, died peacefully Saturday July 14, 2018 at the New York State Veterans Home @ Batavia. He was born April 17, 1934 in Maintenance, PA a son of the late Alfred and Eva (Snyder) Swift.                                                    

Surviving is his beloved wife of 31 years Bernice E. (Snyder) Swift of East Bethany; 6 children, 6 step-children; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, 3 brothers along with several nieces and nephews.

  Philip P. Pastore Jr., 93, of Batavia, the owner of the Pok-A-Dot Restaurant and the original owner of Sunny’s Restaurant passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 17, 2018 at the United Memorial Medical Center with his wife and children by his bedside. He was the son of the late former Supervisor Philip P. Pastore Sr. and Georgia (Frongetta) Pastore; son-in-law of Leo and Mary Azzi.

Mr. Pastore was a graduate of Batavia High School. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. He trained as a Marine and a Navy SeaBee. During his time he was stationed in Saipan of the Marshall Islands, Hawaiian Islands and was in the invasion of Okinawa and stationed there until the end of the war.

Upon his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Batavia and was hired at the Massey Harris Company and became the head Blacksmith. While there, he and his friend, Joseph Marone decided to open a little “Hot Dog” stand they called it the Pok-A-Dot. He ran it for over 65 years. A few years later they decided to open Sunny’s Restaurant & Lounge in the Genesee Country Mall and operated it for 25 years. The Pok-A-Dot and its owners were recognized by the Paolo Busti Cultural Foundation for outstanding service to the Italian Community of Genesee County.  

He was an avid sportsman, having played basketball with the “5^th Warders” team. He bowled with and sponsored the Pok-A-Dot bowling team. Phil won medals for table tennis and was an amazing tennis player. Golf was his game, his friends called him ‘Fairway Phil” and was the oldest golfer and member of the Batavia Country Club. He was a former member of St. Anthony’s Holy Name Society and a member of Ascension Parish.  

He is survived by his wife of 70 years; Leona (Azzi) Pastore of Batavia; six children Michael (Nancy) Pastore of Key West, FL., Paulette Pontillo of West Palm Beach, FL., Georgeann (David) Hartman of Nashville, TN., Phyllis (Timothy) Beers Sr. of Denver, CO., Patricia Olverd of Warsaw, Vincent (Kayleen) Pastore of Le Roy; Aunt Lena Pastore of FL.; sisters-in-law Matilda Syracuse and Virginia Bass; grandchildren Micah Pastore, Timothy (Gretchen) Pastore, Alysia (David) Thibault, Jamie Wortzman, Tony Pontillo, Philip Pontillo, Gary Call Hanley, Timothy (Sara) Beers Jr., Georgia Lee (Marc) Graham, Jessica (David) Blum, Ashley (Jared) Parkey and David Olverd Jr. along with several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a great-granddaughter; Delilah Rae Graham.

Oakfield - Lorraine Kowalczyk, 90, of Oakfield, a former employee at GTE Sylvania in Batavia, died Monday, July 16, 2018 at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia.

Mrs. Kowalczyk was born October 24, 1927 in Indian Falls, a daughter of the late John and Laura (Call) Smith.

She was a graduate of Pembroke High School, and  a member of St. Cecilia's Church, and American Legion Women's Auxiliary.  She enjoyed traveling, gardening, arts and crafts.  She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Her husband, Julian J. Kowalczyk, died on June 17, 1992.

Survivors include 5 children, Paul (Karen Ann) Kowalczyk of Hazelton. PA, Linda (Jack) Baxter and  Eileen (Paul) Kirkpatrick, both of Oakfield, Julie (Dennis) Slattery of Vestal and Michael (Donna) Kowalczyk of Oakfield; 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. 

She was the mother of the late Colleen Unger who died in 1998 and sister of the late Dorothy Nelson, John, Walter, Roy, Norman and Albert Smith.

Janice M. (Draper) Williams, 62, of Batavia, passed away on July 16, 2018 at the United Memorial Medical Center. She was born on September 27, 1955 in Batavia, daughter of the late Charles Draper Sr. and Charlotte (Gould) Draper. In addition to her husband and father, brothers Charles Draper Jr. and Brian Draper predecease her.

Janice (aka Big Red or Mama) spent half of her life in Batavia and the other half in West Virginia, where she met her husband of 32 years, the late Ronald (Doc) Williams Sr. Janice worked at P.W. Minor in Batavia for many years and also at Gino’s Pizza Place while she was in West Virginia. Janice will be remembered for being a life-long caregiver. Her door was always open if family or a friend was in need. Janice liked to cook, watch TV and play cards. Janice was fortunate enough to visit her great-grandchild in Ohio just days before her passing.

Janice is survived by her children, Amy (Timothy Hirschman) Williams, Ronald (Vicky) Williams Jr., and Janice (Phillip Sawyer) Williams, all of Batavia; siblings, Gary Draper, Roger (Dianna) Draper, Diana Draper, Jeff (Tammy) Draper, Charlotte (Butch) Jepsen, Andrew Draper, all of Batavia, and Dennis (Betty) Draper of LeRoy; grandchildren, Steven (Bethany Putney) Mosley, Cody (Jessy) Mosley, Anna (Keith Jackson) Mosley, Devon Williams, Koda Williams, and Kailey Williams; one great-grandchild, Kevin Dennis Mosley along many nieces and nephews; and her cat, Ewok.

Elaine E. Rice, 91 of Batavia passed away peacefully on Saturday July 14, 2018 at Batavia Health Care Center. She was born on January 29, 1927 to the late Wesley (Carolyn Kirsch) Holmes. She is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Rice.

Mrs. Rice owned and trained race horses, spending a lot of her time at Batavia Downs.

She is survived by her children Donald of Batavia; Ronald (Janice) of Albion; Michael (Addie) Rice of Florida; Carol Miller of Batavia; 10 grandchildren, Dillon, Cassady, Julie, Cale, Kaitlyn, Kenny, Megan, Chrissy, Harvey, Yvette; 3 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to an 11:00 AM Graveside Service on Thursday July 19, 2018 where she will be laid to rest at East Bethany Rural Cemetery.

  William F. “Wild Bill” O’Neil, 85, of Attica lost his courageous battle with cancer on July 13, 2018. He was born on May 14, 1933 in Alexander on the family farm to the late Edward and Anna (Pundt) O’Neill. In addition to his parents, Bill is predeceased by his loving wife; Dorann (Rood) O’Neil; sisters Helen Deja, Mary Vanas, Ruth Lehnis and Dorothy Baker.

William was a United States Army Veteran. He worked for 30 years at Westinghouse in Attica and was a Village Police officer for over 20 years. He loved woodworking and was handy at fixing just about anything that was broken around the house. He enjoyed hunting in his earlier days and was known for his marksmanship. Bill was an honorary Criminologist for the American Police Hall of Fame.

He is the beloved father of:  Faith (Ed) Badhorn of Clarence; Connie (Chris) Beck of NM; siblings Margaret Meyer of Corfu, Anne “Totie” Smith of Tonawanda, Francis O’Neil of Batavia, Charles (Judith) O’Neil of Batavia, Edward (Sharon) O’Neil Jr. of NC and Marcella (Anthony) Saracini of Batavia; grandchildren Chloe (Jesse) Puschek of East Amherst, Claire Badhorn of Clarence, Chelsey Beck of NM and Cameron Beck of CO along with several nieces and nephews.

Corfu/Byron - James A. Boorom, 96, of Corfu, formerly of Byron, a technical installer for Western Electric in Rochester, for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1983, died Friday, July 13, 2018 at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester.

Mr. Boorom was born December 9, 1921 in Batavia, a son of the late Glen and Mildred (Mills) Boorom.

He was a 1941 graduate of Batavia High School and played on the Esso's a semi-pro football team in Batavia.  He served during World War II with the Army’s 243^rd Battalion in France and Germany.

He was a member The Pioneers of America and the former Batavia Loyal Order of Moose.  He was an avid gardener and enjoyed yardwork.  He greatly loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It is said that he was a man of many trades and was always willing to help others.

His wife, Lois A. (Ray) Boorom died January 21, 2013.

Survivors include a son, Michael Boorom of Batavia; 2 daughters, Denise Boorom of Rochester and Susan (Frank) Chittenden of Corfu; 5 grandchildren, Zachary (Sarah) Chittenden of Corfu, Cody (Ashley) Chittenden of MS, Wyatt Chittenden of TN, Madison Boorom and Emily Boorom, both of Rochester; a great-grandchild, Liam Chittenden; several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his wife, brothers, a sister and his great-grandchild Easton Chittenden.

LeRoy ~ William George Carmichael, age 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday (July 12, 2018) at The Le Roy Village Green. A son of the late J. Walter and Mabel (Whiting) Carmichael. George was preceded in death by siblings James, John, Paul, Etta Jane Seeley, and Helen Carmichael.      

    

George was a graduate of Le Roy High School, where he was a member of the 1941 Le Roy Football Team that was inducted into the Oatka Knights Hall of Fame on Friday, July 13th. George was a Veteran of WWII, having served our country with the United States Army in England and France and was a member of the Le Roy American Legion.

After his honorable discharge, he worked as an electrician for JW Carmichael and Sons and retired from Vanderlinde Electric in Rochester. He was a member of the IBEW Local 86 of Rochester.  George was an avid golfer and bowler. He followed Jim Boeheim and the Syracuse Orangemen basketball team.

     He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Rita (Van Alst) Carmichael. Daughters Carol (Katie) (late Ronald) Engert and Christine (Richard Farnsworth) McQuillen; grandchildren, Rhonda (Dave) Schmeer, Rebecca (Doug) Thompson, Rachel (Rich) Lombard, Stephanie (Jamie) Call, Stephen (Mack) (Elizabeth) McQuillen, Gregory (Tina) McQuillen; several Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren, In-laws, Pete and Gina Steen, and Dorothy Machols, along with several nieces and nephews.

Farmington -Denise Y. Schaller, 60, passed away unexpectedly following a brief illness, on July 9, 2018 at her home in Farmington.  Denise was born on July 21, 1957 to the late James R. Majors Sr. of Rochester and the late Claudine V. (Meney) Majors of Batavia.

Denise was a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Batavia, and the State University of New York College at Brockport. Denise began her 40 years of service to the community as the operator of the former Kiddie Korral Day Care Center in Batavia. She later worked as a social worker and crisis counselor. For the last decade she was a highly sought after public speaker who provided organizational development training to thousands of public service workers across New York State through her firm, Schaller Solutions. 

She is survived by her children, Joni Schaller and Pamela Schaller, both of Buffalo; grandchildren Romello and Matthias Williams of Buffalo  and Philomena Burger of Perry; brothers James Majors of Baltimore, Md. and Stephen Majors (Todd Leavitt) of Takoma Park, Md.; aunt, Constance Alexander of Batavia; uncle, Hunter Alexander of Batavia; nieces and nephews including Sarah Millman of Towson, Md., Rick Majors (Megan) of Phoenix, Ariz, Jamie Siangco (Malia) of Hawaii; Michael Hixenbaugh of Lockport; Claudia and Shoshana Leavitt-Majors of Takoma Park, Md,; close cousins Colleen Ware of Oakfield, Sean Alexander of Alexandria, Va.; Santa Majors of Batavia, Gordon Shillea of Batavia; loving in-laws from the extended Schaller and Meyers family, along with life-long friends and former and current colleagues who made up Denise's large and loving community. 

She was predeceased by her husband Howard Schaller and brothers Richard Majors and Michael Majors. 

Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main St., Batavia.  Denise’s Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, (July 17, 2018) at City Church, 210 East Main Street, Batavia.  In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make a memorial donation in Denise's name to their local food bank.  Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Attica.

Thomas D. Lynch, 86, of Attica passed away peacefully on July 10, 2018 at the East Side Nursing Home in Warsaw. He was born on December 7, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY to the late John and Catherine (Kilroy) Lynch. In addition to his parents, Thomas is predeceased by his daughter in law Bernadette Lynch and grandson Michael Lynch.

Tom grew up (and met his wife) in Brooklyn. He attended P.S. #48; St. Francis Prep and St. Francis College. He moved the family to Hicksville, Long Island as children came along. Subsequent moves to Tonawanda, South Jersey and West Seneca added many special friends and memories. The final move was to the hills of Wyoming County in the late 1970’s. There, he happily settled into a slower pace of life. Tom quickly became involved in St. Vincent’s parish, volunteering for many of the Ministries. Tom was fiercely passionate about his Creator, his Catholic faith and his family. As a 3^rd Degree Knight (K of C), Tom became widely known in the Pro-Life Community. His efforts in matters of legislation, education and advocacy were recognized locally and nationally. Tom eagerly attended many of the Right to Life Marches in Washington DC.  Accompanied by wife Eleanor, Tom participated in numerous Catholic Charismatic Leadership Conferences at the Franciscan University of Steubenville. Tom was a personal friend of the University’s Founder, Father Mike Scanlon.  Tom enjoyed Bills and Sabres games with his sons as well as his daughter’s equestrian pursuits. He was an amazing dad who worked long and hard in order to provide Catholic education to his kids. Post-retirement work included increased church involvement and his role of door greeter at the Warsaw, NY Wal-Mart. Tom accepted his Cancer diagnosis with strength and tact.  He had a heart of gold and made the world a better place with his kindness.    

He is survived by his loving wife; Eleanor (Calhoun) Lynch of Attica; Thomas G. Lynch of Attica, Patrick Lynch of Irondequoit and Mary Kay Lynch of Attica; sister Ursula (John) Sullivan of Breezy Point, NY; grandson Brenden Francis Lynch of Irondequoit.

Family and friends are invited to call in Saturday July 14, 2018 from 9:00-10:30AM at Marley Funeral Home, LLC. 135 Main Street Attica, New York 14011. An 11:00AM Mass of Christian Burial will follow visitation on Saturday at St. Joachim & Anne Parish 50 East Ave. in Attica. Thomas will be laid to rest in St. Vincent’s Cemetery in Attica.
