Genesee ARC is seeking donations for its 'Ginormous Garage Sale'

By Daniel Crofts

Genesee ARC will be holding a "Ginormous Garage Sale" at its Community Center site, at 38 Woodrow Road in Batavia. This will take place from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Friday, July 30 and Saturday, July 31.

Those who wish to help can donate items to the sale or purchase an outdoor 9' by 18' space for their own sales.

ARC's proceeds will go toward the People Realizing Potential Capital Campaign and toward art and recreation programs for children with disabilities.

Call Darla at 343-1123, ext. 250, for further details.

Batavia siblings make a good team selling 'books and more'

By Daniel Crofts

Between Picnic in the Park and Mark and Mary Holmes' 4th of July garage sale, spectators had a lot of attractions to choose from on Sunday.

Mark and Mary, who are brother and sister, have a big sale in front of Mary's home on 18 Park Ave. -- right across the street from Centennial Park -- around every major holiday. They donate the proceeds to different area charities; this time, the money went to the Junior Grange in East Pembroke.

Many of the items they sell are recyclable, including these wind chimes made of empty cans:

Mark and Mary may have another sale on Labor Day, depending on what their schedule is like. They are currently in the process of opening up a used bookstore in the Batavia Industrial Center on Harvester Avenue.

The store will be called "Anything Goes: Books and More," and they hope to have it up and running by the end of the month.

They had some books and movies on sale Sunday, you might say as a sort of "preview":

"Anything Goes" will be something quite different for Batavia. It will be a sort of hybrid bookstore/flea market/antique store/forum for charities, among other things.

In addition to selling used books, VHS tapes, antiques, and other needful items -- most of which will cost $5 or less -- the Holmes' will have a corner of the store dedicated to area charities. A jar will be available for donations, and a different charity will be featured each week.

"This is a way for us to give back to the community," Mary said, pointing out the tremendous amount support she and her brother have received from the people of Genesee County during their sales.

Anyone who would like more information about the store, or would like to volunteer to help set things up, may call Mark at 591-2669 (leave a message).

Its That Season Again!

By Tim Howe

What season you may ask? Duck Season? Wabbit Season? Elmer Season? Nope....Garage sale season!!!!!!! Its time for the annual Howe-Smart garage sale. Actually this time around it has been 2 years since our last one so even more treasures have accumulated :)

As usual my best friend, his wife and myself will have TONS of stuff to sell. Not only our own stuff, but we sell things for friends and family members as well, so it will be very safe to call it a "multi family sale"

This year however for my friend and his wife they have a different motive for selling. They are just finishing up adoption proceedings.  They have done everything they could do. Now it is up to the mothers to look through books and books and books of all the familys wanting children and God willing pick my friend and his wife. So this year the money they make will fund adoption costs, pre "bundle of joy" preparations that need to be made around the house...ect ect. Also my friends wife will be selling her photography as a fund raiser for the adoption (I thought that was pretty clever).

In all the years we have had our garage sales we always had them on Saturday only. We have been told so many times year after year that friday is the best day to have them, so this year we are finally listening to the advice and extending it to Friday and Saturday. This shoe elf will be playing hooky from work too :)

33 Lincoln Avenue, Leroy. Friday June 25th and Saturday June 26th. I am not 100% sure on the time, but if your an avid garage saler you probally get the daily news to check on sales, and i know we advertised on there as well. . It will be in the ballpark of 8am until about 4pm each day (Give or Take) The more money you GIVE us the more items you TAKE the less time we will have to roast in the hot sun on the blacktop :) Pack your bags, we are going on a guilt trip :)

We will have:

-Books

-Movies (DVD's)

-Music (CD's)

-Games

-Video Games

-Household

-Small Furnishings

-and of course an over abondance of everyones favorite item......."Miscellaneous"

if you are an avid "commenter" on the batavian as I am PLEASE introduce yourself, I would really like to put a face to the names i see.

So if you find yourself around the Leroy area (My friends are born and raised "Batavians" but a few years ago they bought a house in Leroy and are now "Leroynians") We would love to have you (and your money) come on out and see us :)
