Hosting a regional playoff game for the first time since 2010, the Genesee Community College women's soccer team made the most of home field advantage on Tuesday night and defeated visiting Hudson Valley Community College, 2-1.

As the top seed in the west, Genesee earned a first round bye and welcomed #4 Hudson Valley CC out of the east to town after the Lady Vikings defeated Jamestown Community College in the opening round of the Region III playoffs on Saturday.

Neither team made good on any first half chances and both teams went into the half scoreless.

It wasn't until the 61st minute that Kate Springsteen gave Genesee a 1-0 lead with her seventh goal of the season. Rachel VanDuser assisted on the goal.

Ashley Makowski made it 2-0 GCC just five-minutes later with a goal that would prove to be the game-winner. It was Makowski's 12th goal of the season.

It remained 2-0 Genesee until the 88th minute when Hudson Valley scored to cut the Lady Cougars' lead down to one. GCC was able to control possession for the final 1:30 and held on to advance to the Region III Finals.

Genesee will play SUNY Delhi in the finals on Saturday at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. #2 SUNY Delhi defeated #3 Tompkins-Cortland Community College on Tuesday night, 4-1 to reach the finals. The winner will represent Region III group B in the NJCAA National Tournament.

GCC is now 13-3-1 overall on the season.

Ashley Makowski scored a hat-trick on Wednesday night to help the Genesee Community College women's soccer team to a 5-3 victory over visiting Jamestown Community College, extending GCC's winning streak to nine in a row.

JCC took a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute, but Dana Hansen tied the game with a goal in the 13th minute for GCC, her first of two goals in the game. Hansen gave Genesee the lead with a header that found the back of the net just five minutes later off of a corner cross from Kaitlyn Bowers before Makowski made it 3-1 with her first of three goals in the 20th minute.

Jamestown CC was able to cut it to one with a late first half goal and Genesee led 3-2 at the break.

Makowski's second goal of the game came off of a free kick in the 52nd minute and she increased the GCC lead to 5-2 with an unassisted goal in the 61st minute.

JCC added a late goal in the 89th minute, but it was too late as Genesee improved to 10-3-1 overall.

Hansen and Makowski each had an assist for GCC as well.

Maddie Potter made 14 saves in net.

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Onondaga Community College for a 1 p.m. start.




The Genesee Community College men's soccer team played its final regular season home game on Wednesday night and beat visiting Jamestown Community College, 4-2.

Genesee led the entire way and took a lead just three-minutes into the first half when Jordan Cooper beat the JCC goalkeeper thanks to an assist from Aaron Dunks. Dunks helped Austin Richardson give GCC a two-goal advantage by setting the freshman forward up for a goal in the 35th minute and the Cougars led 2-0 at the half.

Genesee had a 3-0 lead before Jamestown scored its first goal in the 55th minute, but Nathan Rose gave GCC some insurance with a goal off of a free kick in the 70th minute to make it 4-1. JCC scored again with under eight-minutes remaining, but the Cougars held on for the win, improving to 5-1 in Western New York Athletic Conference play.

With the win, GCC improves to 8-4 overall and the Cougars will travel to Onondaga Community College on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. start.

The Genesee Community College women's soccer team increased its winning streak to seven games after a 9-0 win over Jamestown Community College on Saturday afternoon.

Sporting pink uniforms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Lady Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute after Kate Springsteen found the back of the net, her sixth goal of the season. Dana Hansen made it 2-0 just five minutes later, and Ashley Makowski, Amanda DiSalvo and Lydia Rechlin added to lead with a goal apiece in the opening period. GCC led 5-0 at the half.

Denae McGrath made it 6-0 just two minutes into the second half and Kaitlyn Bowers, Shea Giardini and Karissa Schuster also scored a goal each to help the Lady Cougars cruise to the victory.

Along with a goal, Hansen had two assists. Makowski, McGrath, Schuster, Marisa Fox and Nicole Bramer each had an assist as well.

Genesee sent 34 shots on the JCC-Olean net and Maddie Potter made one save in 90 minutes of work in goal to earn the shutout.

GCC improves to 8-3-1 overall and will host Bryant and Stratton College on Monday at 4 p.m.

Nine different players scored for the Genesee Community College women's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon, en-route to a 10-0 win over Cayuga Community College.

Kate Sprinsteen got the scoring going for GCC in the 12th minute and Ashley Makowski followed with a goal less than thirty-seconds later. Dana Hansen, Karissa Schuster and Rachel Ball also beat the Lady Spartans goalkeeper during the opening period, to stake Genesee a 5-0 lead at the half.

Hansen, the only repeat goal scorer in the game, made it 6-0 in the 49th minute and Sarah Loranty, Rachel Oliver, Amanda DiSalvo and Samantha Bogdan all added goals in the second half.

Hansen, Sprinsteen and DiSalvo also tallied two assists each.

The Lady Cougars sent 40 shots on the Cayuga CC net and outshot the Lady Spartans, 40-1.

Maddie Potter and Megan Mase split time in net to earn the shutout.

Genesee improves to 5-3-1 and will host Erie Community College on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Jordan Cooper scored a first half hat-trick to pace the Genesee Community College men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Cayuga Community College on Wednesday night.

Cooper netted the first goal of the game in the 20th minute of the first half to give the Cougars the early lead. He followed with a second goal just nine-minutes later thanks to an assist from Ryan Burns. Ben Polk set Cooper up for his third goal in the 40th minute before Nathan Rose made it 4-0 after cashing in on a corner cross from Aaron Dunks with just over three-minutes left in the opening period.

Genesee was held scoreless in the second half and gave up a Cayuga goal late, but shut the door and held on for the victory.

Cameron Evans made four saves in net, playing all 90 minutes. Cooper's hat-trick were his first three goals of the season.

The Cougars improve to 4-3 overall and will host Erie Community College this Saturday for a 3 p.m. start.

The Genesee Community College men's soccer team gave Mercyhurst North East its first loss of the season on Thursday night, as the Cougars defended home turf and turned in a 2-0 Western New York Athletic Conference game victory.

Kern O’Reilly rebounded a header from Jake O’Leary that ricocheted off the crossbar and calmly netted the game’s first goal for GCC in the 54th minute to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Genesee then capitalized on a through ball on the back line from Yuta Hashimoto to Austin Richardson in the 68th minute. The two goals sealed the deal for GCC, which maintained a solid back line all night with O’Leary and Kyle Shaw.

With the win, Genesee improves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The win comes two days after a 5-0 victory on the road at Corning Community College on Tuesday. The match was a makeup of a Sep. 11 contest that was postponed due to rain.

Ryan Burns netted two goals for GCC and O'Leary, O'Reilly and Nathan Rose also found the back of the net.

Genesee will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Niagara County Community College for a 1 p.m. start.

The Genesee Community College women's soccer team lost its home opener on Tuesday night to visiting Monroe Community College, 8-0.

The #6 Lady Tribunes got two goals from Katie Knell less than a minute apart in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Jessica Riggall assisted on both goals, which were scored in the 15th and 16th minutes respectively.

MCC tallied six more goals in the second half, including a third from Knell in the 81st minute. Riggall chipped in two goals of her own and Miranda Colon added two assists.

The Lady Tribunes outshot Genesee 31-6 on the night.

The loss drops GCC to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Lady Cougars will travel to Herkimer County Community College on Thursday for their next contest beginning at 4 p.m.

Pembroke dropped a close game in it's playoff debut 2-1 against the Holley Hawks in Holley.

The first Holley goal came from Tyler Chmylak with the assist by Ryan Camacho.

The second Holley goal was scored by Will Barniak assisted by Joe DeFelice.

Pembroke's lone goal was scored by Gabe Birkby, assisted by Matthew Colbert.

This was a special night for Holley's coach Dan Orbaker who recorded his 400th win.

The Genesee Community College men’s soccer season came to an end on Sunday afternoon after the No.1 team in the country fell to No.2 Herkimer County Community College, 1-0 in double-overtime.

With the Region III Championship and a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament on the line, Genesee and Herkimer matched up for the second time in two weeks. The Cougars defeated the Generals at home on October 16th, but could not get much going throughout the match on Sunday, stalling in what would be their final game of the year.

A physical first half produced no scoring as both teams battled for possession in the opening period. GCC goalkeeper Jake O’Leary cut down a couple of Herkimer scoring chances, denying the Generals on corner kicks, keeping the game scoreless.

Genesee came within inches of taking the lead in the second half when Dom Francis sent a bid on net that beat the Herkimer goalkeeper and nearly crossed the goal line before it was turned aside by a Generals defender. The missed opportunity proved costly as the Cougars never saw a real scoring chance again.

Herkimer nearly ended the game on a free kick about five minutes into the first overtime, but O’Leary made a diving save to keep the Cougars alive.

After nearly 118 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Generals put an end to the GCC season after Alexandre Saliba found a streaking Charlie Anderson, who put a shot from just in front of the Cougars net under the crossbar and into the goal, ending Genesee’s hopes for a repeat national tournament appearance.

It marks the second time in two years that Herkimer has ended Genesee’s season. Last year, HCCC sent GCC home as national runners up after downing the Cougars 4-1 in the national championship game.

Declan Brennan, Nathan Rose and Liam Ross were named to the All-Tournament Team for Genesee, who finishes the season with a 17-2 overall record. Herkimer claims the Region III title and advances to the national tournament, which begins on Nov. 8th in Herkimer.

The Genesee Community College men’s soccer team is on to the Region III Finals on Sunday afternoon and will play for a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament. The No.1 team in the country defeated Tompkins-Cortland Community College on Saturday afternoon, to set themselves up with an opportunity for a second-straight appearance in the national tournament.

The Cougars had minimal scoring chances in the first half and were unable to find the back of the net. Dom Francis nearly tallied the game’s first goal midway through the first half off of a free kick just outside the box, but his bid sailed over the top of the TC3 net. Another Francis free kick opportunity later in the half was on the mark, but saved by the TC3 goalkeeper.

Tompkins-Cortland had the best scoring opportunity of the opening period. Having to dive to make a save, GCC goalkeeper Jake O’Leary left a vacated net with a free ball in the box. The Panthers managed to get a shot off, but Genesee defender Sam Cassidy was able to step in to make the save and kept TC3 off the board. Both teams went scoreless into the break.

In the second half, Francis was able to break through and put the Cougars on the board. The sophomore forward fended off a Panthers defender and lofted a lefty shot over the TC3 goalkeeper and into the net for his 28th goal of the season to give GCC a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute.

Genesee kept the pressure on and upped their lead in the 62nd minute when Nathan Rose snuck into the middle of the TC3 defense and headed in a cross that gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

GCC added another insurance goal in the 87th minute when George Anthony beat the TC3 goalie, and the Genesee defense held to knock off the Panthers, 3-0.

Genesee will play Herkimer County Community College tomorrow at 1pm for the Region III Championship and a trip to the national tournament on the line. It will be a rematch of an October 16th meeting in which GCC defeated Herkimer, 2-1. During that meeting, Herkimer was the No.1 team in the country and Genesee was No.2. Tomorrow, Genesee will defend the No.1 ranking with Herkimer ranked No.2. Only one team will represent Region III in the national tournament.

New York Premiere Soccer is holding "Soccerween 2012" this Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Batavia Sports Park.

Age groups are U7 through U13 and all participating teams are guaranteed three games and all teams compete in Halloween costumes. The best dressed teams for each age will win a prize.
