Alexander Fire is being dispatched to a report of railroad ties on fire at Genesee Street and Maplewood Road in Attica.

UPDATE: Attica is being dispatched for additional manpower. The first responder reports its only a couple of ties on fire, but in the midst of very steep terrain and will be accessible on foot only.-

A Batavia man was found dead at 7:57 p.m. Friday along Route 98 in Alexander.

The body of Michael J. Falk, 55, a resident on East Main Street, was found about six feet down an embankment by a passing motorist, who initially spotted a bicycle leaning against a guard rail.

The motorist called 9-1-1 and the Alexander Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call. County Coroner Donald Coleman pronounced Falk dead at the scene.

Foul play is not suspected.

The investigation is ongoing. It is being conducted by Deputy Joseph Graff, Sgt. Greg Walker, Sgt. Steve Mullen, Investigator William Ferrando and the Genesee County Coroner's Office.

An 18-year-old Dansville girl died last night in a three-car crash on Route 20 in Darien, and the 24-year-old driver who allegedly caused the crash has been charged with manslaughter.

He was allegedly driving drunk.

Katie M. Stanley, of 8956 McNair Road, Dansville, suffered head and chest injuries in the 11:08 p.m. accident.

Stanley was a passenger in a car that struck a truck making an allegedly illegal left-hand turn.

She was initially transported to UMMC and later transferred to Strong. Her time of death has not been reported.

According to a Sheriff's Office press release, a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup operated by Ronald Wendt II, 24, of 10448 Brookville Road, Alexander, was heading westbound on Route 20, just east of Harper Road. Wendt reportedly tried to make a left-hand turn into a parking area and allegedly failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic.

Wendt's truck was struck by a 1993 Toyota Camery driven by Rachel L. Enderle, 27, of 10281 Jacobs Road, Dansville. Wendt's truck then struck an unoccupied 2002 pickup truck.

The two other passengers in the Toyota were Timothy L. Enderle, 20, of 49 N. Meandowbrook , North Chili, and Gabrielle E. Mahus, 18, of 11493 Mendoleine Road, Dansville.

Mahus and Rachel Enderle were transported to Erie County Medical Center. It's unknown at this time what injuries Mahus sustained. Rachel suffer a lower leg/foot injury. Timothy Enderle was transported to UMMC with a hip injury. He was later transferred to Strong.

No injuries were reported for Wendt. Besides being charged with manslaughter, Wendt faces charges for allegedly driving with a BAC .08 or greater, driving without insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninspected vehicle and failing to yield the right of way. His truck also allegedly did not have a front license plate. Additional charges may be pending.

Wendt was  arraigned in Darien Town Court and placed in the Genesee County Jail on $25,000 bail.

Assisting at the scene were the Darien Volunteer Fire Department, the Alexander Fire Department, Mercy Flight, the City of Batavia Ambulance Service and the Attica Police Department.

UPDATE Aug. 16, 8:51 a.m.: The Sheriff's office provided an amended report giving the age of Rachel L. Enderle as 27, not 17 as originally reported.

Joanne C. Buchanan, 50, of Box 70 Country Road Route 37, Central Square, and Jayne E. Best, 52, of 9384 Woodlawn Drive, Brewerton, were arrested for allegedly attempting to evade or defeat tax and possession of untaxed cigarettes. Deputy Tim Wescott initiated a traffic stop for alleged speeding and reportedly found 10 cartoons of cigarettes in the car Buchanan and Best were in.

Donald J. Cummins, 60, of 104 Bernice Drive, Seneca, is charged with DWI. Cummins was reportedly driving westbound on Route 33 at 11:53 p.m. when his vehicle allegedly strayed from the roadway toward the left shoulder striking a road cone. Deputy Kevin R. McCarthy stopped Cummins and found he was allegedly driving while intoxicated. He was also cited for allegedly driving with a BAC of .08 or greater and moving from a lane unsafely.

Susanna E. Venti, 60, of Alexander, is charged with DWI. Venti was stopped by a state trooper on Walker Road in the Town of Darien for allegedly crossing the center line. Venti's alleged BAC was .08 percent. Venti was cited for DWI, failing to keep right and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Railroad Road in the Village of Alexander is closed due to flooding.

The home of Arnold and Norma Kirch, at 10551 Brookville Road in Alexander, was destroyed by fire this morning.

Smoke detectors woke the couple up at about 4:15 a.m. and they got out of the house safely and quickly.

However, fuel oil stored in the basement in a 150-gallon container spilled into a swamp area and into a tributary. The state's Department of Environmental Conservation has been called to the scene. Tim Yaeger, emergency management coordinator for Genesee County, said booms have been put in place to block the fuel oil from traveling downstream.

A 1,000-gallon fuel oil tank in the backyard also ruptured, but that spill has been contained.

Yaeger said Mr. Kirch said he thought the fire started in the garage and an assistant fire chief who lives nearby confirmed that observation.

The fire spread quickly, Yaeger said, because of the peaked-roof construction of the log cabin home.

Putting the fire out was hampered, Yaeger said, because of power lines in the area coming down and arcing.

The Alexander Fire Department worked the fire with mutual aid from Darien, Stafford, Town of Batavia, Bethany, East Pembroke and Attica. Inmates from the Wyoming Correctional Facility are on scene helping with clean up. No injuries to firefighters were reported.

An ambulance has been dispatched to a two-car accident at Walker and Gillett roads in Alexander.

A victim is reportedly complaining of chest and shoulder pain.

One vehicle is described as having heavy front-end damage.

Karl Matthew Churchill, 29, of 6018 Main Road, Stafford, is charged with harrassment. Churchhill allegedly made a threatening phone call to the Village of Corfu Court after receiving a traffic ticket for allegedly tinted windows.

Robert E. Magoffin Jr., 37, 3717 Broadway Road, Alexander, is charged with DWI with a BAC of .08 or greater. Magoffin was allegedly doing 84 m.p.h. in a 40 m.p.h. zone on Route 20 in Darien when he was stopped.  He was ordered to appear in Darien Town Court on Aug. 18.

A two-vehicle accident with minor injuries is reportedly blocking Route 20 at 1888 Broadway, half way between Alexander and Darien.

The accident involves a car and tractor trailer. There is reportedly severe damage on the car and it's leaking gasoline.

Mercy Flight received a donation of $7,115 today from the Don Cummings Memorial Antique & Vintage Snowmobile Show, which was held May 9 in Alexander.

The donation will help defray the $300,000 cost of outfitting Mercy Flight with night goggles. The safety measure is expensive, explain Karen Bridge, community event coordinator in Batavia for Mercy Flight, because the goggles require training and modification to the helicopters' cockpits, as well as the goggles themselves.

The goggles will improve vision at night for pilots, so they can better see power lines, telephone polls and even small hills, Bridge said.

"Last year there were a lot of well publicized crashes all over the U.S., so it's a good thing to have," Bridge said.

This is the third year for the snowmobile show, which was originally known as the Alexander Antique and Vintage Snowmobile Show. The show was founded by Don Cummings, but he died shortly after last year's show. This year the show was renamed in his honor.

More than 220 National Grid customers along Route 98 south of the city are without power.

The National Grid web site says the power outage effects the town and village of Alexander as well as part of the Town of Batavia. 

National Grid estimates power will be restored about 5:30 p.m.

UPDATE 4:14 p.m.: Power has been restored. Steve Brady at National Grid said it was a short outage that was necessary to replace a failing lightning arrester.  It's safer to take power offline to make a quick, but much needed repair. "It was an unplanned, planned outage," Brady said. Normally, National Grid likes to notify customers of planned outages, but when this particular faulty arrester was found, engineers decided it should be replaced right away to avoid a bigger problem later. Brian P. Griffin, 24, of Batavia, is charged with grand theft and endangering the welfare of a child after he allegedly forced his way into the car of an ex-girlfriend, climbed over her children and grabbed a cell phone from her hand. The alleged incident took place Saturday around 7:20 p.m.  Griffin is being held without bail.

John C. Townley, 33, of Alexander, is charged with criminal mischief. Townley allegedly got involved in a verbal argument with another patron at MY Saloon early Saturday morning. Because of the disturbance, an employee reportedly asked Townley to leave the bar. Once outside, Townley reportedly punched a window of the building and broke it.

Cory J. Rigdon, 22, of Holley, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .18 or higher and unlicensed operation of a vehicle. Rigdon was arrested after reportedly driving off the end of Hessenthaler Road in Byron on Sunday evening. Upon further investigation, deputies found he had a prior DWI conviction.

John Tullar, 30, of Batavia, is charged with unlawful possession of marijuana following a traffic stop on Pratt Road.

Jeffery S. Leonard, 22, of Tonawanda, is charged with DWI, a BAC of .08 or greater and ticked for failure to stop at a stop sign. He was cited early Sunday morning on Pearl Street in Batavia.

Ten voters showed up to the Village of Alexander election meeting last night, five of them were candidates for village offices.

The voters also approved a $373,450 budget. The tax rate remains unchanged at $1.66 per $1,000 of assessed value.

Elected unanimously to one-year terms by the 10 voters:

William Wagner was elected to a two-year term as village trustee.
