Renter on Bank Street reportedly left dog after moving
The woman who rented the lower apartment at 139 Bank St. in the City of Batavia is believed to have abandoned her dog after moving out. A neighbor called dispatch to report that the dog has been in the vacant residence for at least two days. An officer responded to the scene.

UPDATE 12:52 p.m.: The smoke is related to some sort of sewer work going on in the village. Le Roy fire standing down. A Le Roy chief informs dispatchers, "we may have a lot more of these in the coming weeks."
UPDATE 2:02 p.m.: The same kind of situation may be responsible for a call about smoke in the residence at 7 Elm St. Le Roy fire is asked to stand by in quarters until the chief confirms it.
UPDATE 2:09 p.m.: The chief confirmed this incident is also due to the ongoing sewer work. The Le Roy assignment is back in service.
Car and school bus accident reported on West Main Street, no injuries
A car vs. school bus accident is reported in front of Dunn Tire store at 140 W. Main St. in the city. The bus has no passengers. There are no injuries. City fire and Mercy medics are responding.
BREAKING: Tom Turnbull named Genesee County Chamber of Commerce president

Tom Turnbull, publisher of the Batavia Daily News, will become the new president of the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce.
He replaces retiring Lynn Freeman, who steps down at the end of the month.
Freeman, 70, announced his retirement in June saying he wanted to do other things.
Turnbull has been publisher of the Daily News in Batavia since 2002. He holds a master's degree from the State University at Buffalo.
Inmate at federal detention center on apparent 'hunger strike'
An inmate at the Buffalo Federal Detention Center has not eaten for 55 days, according to a caller to dispatch, and an ambulance is called to the facility at 4250 Federal Drive in the Town of Batavia.
The man is said to have "a severe sickness" due to "an apparent hunger strike." Because a Mercy rig is not available, an ambulance from Byron is responding.
UPDATE 11:51 a.m.: Byron is standing down and Mercy is now responding.
UPDATE 12:28 p.m.: The 28-year-old is being taken to UMMC.
UPDATE 3:50 p.m. (by Howard): We're trying to get more information on this situation and have been in touch with a spokesman for ICE. We can say at this point, it's 55 (or 50) meals, NOT days. More information to come, assuming it becomes available.

Pembroke Town Park is site of semi-pro football fund-raising match on Saturday

The Lyndonville Tigers semi-pro football team will be hosting the Troy Fighting Irish at the Pembroke Town Park this Saturday (Sept. 14) at 4 p.m. The event will be kicked off by Jenn Suhr, two time Olympic medal winner and current Gold Medalist in women's pole vault, who will being performing the opening coin flip as well as a photo and autograph session following.
The team will also be providing a professional fireworks display following the football contest around 8 p.m. that is estimated to be 20 minutes in length.
Tickets are $5 at the gate. Kids under 12 free.
The Tigers look to cap off their 10th anniversary season with a win and an Northeastern Football Alliance championship over the Troy Fighting Irish who are looking to win their fourth straight championship. Both teams are 9-2 on the season and have won their respective divisional titles. It should be an exciting game and experience for all involved.
During the event the Pembroke Youth Association will be running concessions to help raise money for the local youth sports teams in the area. Spectators from around the area are encouraged to come and enjoy the activities as well as tailgate before and after the game. There will be no place better to be on this Saturday afternoon.

Accident with minor injuries at Ford and Norton roads
An accident involving two vehicles is reported at Ford and Norton roads. Injuries are minor. Elba and Byron fire departments are responding along with medics.
UPDATE 3:07 p.m.: A second ambulance is called in for a subject with chest pain.
UPDATE 3:19 p.m.: Byron is transporting one patient to Strong Memorial Hospital.
UPDATE 4:07 p.m.: The other patient is a 38-year-old male who was taken to UMMC with an injured right hand.
White, blond woman wearing blue sparkly shirt sought by the law for possible Walmart larceny
Law enforcement is scouring the vicinity of Walmart following a reported larceny at that store. The subject of the search is a blond, white female, about 25 years old, wearing a "blue sparkly" shirt. She was seen within the last 15 minutes trying to get into a 2007 white Saturn Vue, but when she realized she was being pursued, she fled on foot. She was last spotted behind Office Max. (The vehicle is described by the manufacturer, now Chevrolet, as a compact SUV crossover.)
UPDATE 12:16 p.m.: Officers believe they have located the suspect at her residence in Le Roy. (The vehicle, driven by a possible accomplice, is registered to a person in Le Roy, too.) The landlord told officers that the tenant entered the dwelling and was not seen leaving, but she's allegedly not answering the door. "We'll get a warrant," one officer tells another.
UPDATE 12:32 p.m.: The suspect is in custody.
Semi-trucks to be rerouted on Route 20 at 63 and 77
Not clear as to why, but all semi-trucks are to be rerouted at Texaco Town. Pavilion fire is to shut down big rig traffic at routes 63 and westbound 20. Darien is to do the same at routes eastbound 20 and 77.
UPDATE 5:41 p.m.: The road is reopened. The big rigs were briedly rerouted because of the accident on Route 20 (Broadway Road) in Alexander.

Food processing giant Bonduelle to expand U.S. market after acquiring Allens' WNY plants

The frozen food industry in Upstate New York got a boost recently with global giant Bonduelle’s entry into the American market. Bonduelle, the French-based company that is a worldwide market leader in frozen, canned, and ready-to-use vegetables, made a recent acquisition of two frozen food processing plants and one packaging plant in Upstate New York, as well as a processing plant in Fairwater, Wis., that launches the company’s presence in the United States.
“Upstate New York was a natural selection for entry into the U.S. market because of the presence of a strong agricultural community that produces vegetables up to Bonduelle’s strict quality standards,” said Daniel Vielfaure, CEO of Bonduelle Americas. “We are very pleased with the way the acquisition has gone and are thrilled to be able to contribute to local economic development.”
The Upstate New York plants, which are located in Oakfield, Bergen and Brockport, were previously owned by Allens. Bonduelle acquired the properties in 2012 and retained all of the existing full-time staff. Bonduelle employs nearly 800 people in the U.S., 400 of which are full-time workers.
Bonduelle plans to process 257 million pounds of frozen vegetables in the United States in 2014; 40 percent will be processed in Bergen and 17 percent in Oakfield. The Brockport packaging facility will pack 130 million pounds of processed vegetables.
Jim Newcomb, facilities manager at the Bergen plant, has been pleased with the acquisition and the new ownership.
“They’ve been a great company to work for,” Newcomb said. “Bonduelle has exchanged innovative ideas with us and implemented some of our best practices in their existing operations. It really feels like a partnership.”
Bonduelle purchases produce — including sweet corn, peas, carrots, beans, and spinach — from local growers and rents space from local cold storage facilities, further infusing dollars into the area’s economy.
Although a well-known brand name in Europe, Canada, and South America, Bonduelle currently provides vegetables only for private label brands in America. Wegmans store brand frozen vegetables are a notable example of Bonduelle crops produced and distributed under private label.
Complaint: young man riding four-wheeler without helmet, shirt, shoes
A caller complains to dispatch that a young male about 20 years old is riding a brown four-wheeler up and down the middle of Tesnow Road and he is not wearing a helmet, a shirt, nor shoes. A Sheriff's deputy is responding. Tesnow Road straddles Alabama and Pembroke.
GCC athletic trainer named September Employee of the Month

Genesee Community College is pleased to announce that Athletic Trainer Eric Sandler has been named September 2013 Employee of the Month. Eric and his wife Jessica live in Gates and are the parents of a 3-year old daughter, Jenna.
Eric has been with GCC since September 2007. As head athletic trainer he provides all aspects of sports medicine to the college's sports teams, including injury evaluation, rehabilitation, and taping and wrapping. He also serves as the strength and conditioning coach.
"I am responsible for designing and implementing year-round training programs for injury prevention and increased sports performance," he said.
Eric also oversees the hiring of about 40 students per year to work in Athletics.
In addition, Eric serves as an adjunct instructor in Health and Physical Education, teaching the coursework for the Personal Trainer concentration in the Fitness and Recreation Management program.
"These courses culminate in students being eligible and qualified to take a certification exam in Personal Training," he said.
Eric is described as a "passionate and dedicated teacher." In naming him employee of the month, the college noted "Eric's expertise in the Personal Trainer concentration is of tremendous assistance to our students in guiding them to earn their certification." He has made noteworthy contributions to improve curriculum in the Fitness and Recreation Management program and always displays the highest level of professionalism and dedication to the institution and the students.
Prior to his work at GCC, Eric was an athletic trainer/sports performance coach at Agape Physical Therapy in Rochester. He also served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University at Buffalo where he earned his Master's Degree in Exercise Science. He received a bachelor's degree in Physical Education from the College at Brockport.
Eric is a member of the 2010 GCC Leadership Academy. Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his family and playing softball and fantasy baseball/football. Of his work at the college Eric says his favorite part is "knowing that my daily actions have a direct impact on the students I teach/serve."

Students wanted to join GC Youth Court
The Genesee County Youth Bureau is seeking local students in grades eight through 11 to become members of the Genesee County Youth Court. Youth Court is the process of being judged by your peers.

Two big trucks collide at Route 262 and Norton Road
Two large trucks have collided at Route 262 and Norton Road in Elba. Callers to dispatch indicate the drivers may be out of the vehicles and that injuries may be minor. But there are conflicting reports. Elba fire and Mercy medics are responding. Mercy Flight in Batavia is on ground standby. A semi and a dump truck are thought to be involved. There is a significant amount of debris in the roadway as well as some spilt fuel or other hazardous materials.
UPDATE 2:15 p.m.: A responder on scene reports the people involved are OK but may have minor injuries. Medics are told to continue. Mercy Flight's standby is cancelled. The spilt fuel is believed to be from the "saddle tanks" on the truck(s) and not from any cargo. The county HAZMAT team is on standby for now.
UPDATE 2:16 p.m.: A fill-in out of Barre's fire hall is requested for Elba. It is confirmed that the collision is a semi-truck vs. dump truck.
UPDATE 2:19 p.m.: One lane of traffic on Route 262 (Ford Road) is completely blocked. Believe it's the eastbound lane. State Troopers request HAZMAT to the scene.
UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Additional fire police out of Byron are called.
UPDATE 2:25 p.m.: The Department of Environmental Protection is being contacted about the spill of 50-plus gallons of diesel fuel, which is said to be soaking into the ground. Meanwhile, Elba Town Highway Department is asked to bring in a truckload of sand to absorb the spill as best as possible for now. They are going to shut off traffic at Old Ford Road by Andy's Pizza.
UPDATE 2:28 p.m.: Mercy medics are back in service and report the two drivers involved are sign-offs.
UPDATE 2:31 p.m.: Command reports there's a lot of Speedy Dry on the ground and confirms Elba Town Highway is on its way with sand. The fuel is "held up in a ditch, but some is going into the ground, a cow pasture with an electric fence."
UPDATE 2:35 p.m.: Oakfield fire police are called and the Elba School District has been informed of traffic issues.
UPDATE 2:50 p.m.: Traffic police are shutting down Route 262 at Transit Road.
UPDATE 3:02 p.m.: Command calls for two ambulances, non-emergency. One for a truck driver involved in the incident, who previously declined medical aid, and another for a firefighter suffering from possible heat exhaustion.
UPDATE 3:12 p.m.: Authorities updated the spill information to say that one truck contained 40-plus gallons of diesel fuel, and the actual amount that leaked out is not yet known. They need to untangle the vehicles to make a better determination. The other vehicle's fuel tank did not rupture. The auxiliary is called to bring in refreshments this hot and windy afternoon.
UPDATE 4:02 p.m.: After pulling apart the mangled wreckage, they determined a little while ago that indeed one truck spilt roughly 40 gallons of diesel fuel and the other's fuel tank is still intact. Fire police have shut down Edgerton and Norton roads. One of the truck drivers was taken to UMMC for evaluation.
UPDATE 4:24 p.m.: A responder reports that one lane of Route 262 will be reopened but Norton will remain closed for awhile.
UPDATE 4:58 p.m.: Both lanes of Route 262 will be open until a tow truck for one of the vehicles arrrives.
UPDATE 5:16 p.m.: The Elba assignment is back in service. All roads are being reopened.
UPDATE 5:50 p.m.: According to the initial investigation, said Trooper Holly Hanssel, the driver of the white farm truck allegedly failed to yield at the intersection. The farm truck was southbound. It T-boned the Town of Bergen truck. Both drivers were shaken up, but neither was injured.
"The driver of white truck definately whould have been injured if he didn't have his seat belt on," Hanssel said. "They were both seat-belted in and I think that has a lot do with why there are no injuries."
About 25 to 30 gallons of fuel were spilled. About 10 minutes ago, Hanssell cleared the scene and informed dispatch that the spill issue appears to be taken care of but that DEC will double check in the morning.
