Michael Vick Should be Banned from the NFL for Life

By Raelene Christian

I am writing this letter in utter disgust with the possible reinstatement of Michael Vick who was convicted in 2007 for running a cruel and inhumane dog fighting ring (Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels) and lying about it.  Vick initially denied any knowledge about dog fighting on the property, but changed his story after three co-defendants pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with the government.  For those who don’t know what Vick did to these dogs, let me tell you and for those who know, let’s remember  what he did to these helpless dogs.  Between the years of 2002-2007, Michael Vick, and his co-conspirators ran dog fights that were so gruesome the losers either died or were tortured by various methods of hanging, drowning, shooting, slamming the dog’s body on the ground, and electrocuting them if the dogs did not perform to their standards.  A report by a November 2008 ESPN.com news story, the USDA’s inspector general investigations division revealed that Vick and his co-conspirators, also put family pet dogs into the ring with trained pit bulls.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also reports, “Sometimes the dogs were starved to make them more vicious in the pit”.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has made it clear that Vick's only possible path back to playing in the league is by showing sincere remorse.  "Michael's going to have to demonstrate to myself and the general public and to a lot of people, did he learn anything from this experience?" Goodell said at a league's meetings in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Los Angeles Times.

Mr. Goodell asks the question, “did Vick learn anything from this experience?”  Michael Vick learned not to get caught, because the truth of the matter is that these horrific acts against these dogs would still be going on if Vick hadn’t got caught.  Vick will never admit to this though, he’ll show remorse for the money of course.  Vick had been torturing and had dog fighting operations in full run from 2002-2007.  The only thing Michael Vick is remorseful of is that he lost millions by not being able to play in the NFL anymore when NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, suspended Vick indefinitely in August 2007 after he pled guilty to these heinous crimes.  It is my opinion that it’s time to ban Michael Vick from the NFL for life.  Some will argue that he paid his debt to society.  He did some time in Federal prison, and is serving out the rest of his 23 month sentence at his 3,538-square foot home in Hampton, VA, and will be officially released from Federal custody on July 20th.  Wow, what a tough sentence, it is laughable, because if this was you or me, we’d still be in prison.

Please look at the facts of this case.  What Michael Vick did to these dogs is so disturbing and incomprehensible it baffles my mind how someone could be so cruel and inhumane to dogs.  Michael Vick hasn’t even begun to pay for what he did to these helpless dogs.  How does one pay for taking a life, canine or human.  He could possibly never pay back for killing and torturing those innocent dogs.  Also keep in mind that authorities seized 66 dogs, including 55 pit bulls, and equipment commonly used in dog fighting.  About half the dogs were tethered to car axles with heavy chains that allowed the dogs to get close to each other, but not have contact, an arrangement typical for fighting dogs, according to the search warrant affidavit.

A little something to think about, if you flip Dog around it spells God.  I don’t think this was a mere coincidence by God, but rather a sign that dogs our in fact are best friends, and we owe them to be their voice piece.

Please urge with a letter to the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, to NOT reinstate Vick into the NFL.  Address is below.

Sincerely,

Raelene Christian

So we should prevent him from using his god given talent and earn a living because committed a crime?

The two should not affect each other. I understand people being angry at him for what he did, but he served his time.

Should you not be allowed to use your skills to earn a living because you broke a law?

I am a true animal lover but I think that he's paid his dues and deserves a second chance. The SPCA, where he is hoping to volunteer, is all about second chances. I have several rescued cats and dogs that were given a second chance. We need to learn to forgive and give Michael Vick a second chance.

You're correct that God gave him a talent, but he threw it away. He didn't just break a law lets not forget, it's not like he was speeding, or was doing drugs himself. He was torturing helpless dogs, dogs that didn't even stand a chance. You are kidding yourself when you say he deserves a second chance, he didn't make a mistake, he committed barbaric, horrific acts to these animals, and as far as I'm concerned, anyone that hurts the elderly, children or animals doesn't deserve a chance. The dogs were defenseless, and people like Michael Vick are twisted. These dogs didn’t ask to be put into a ring, nor tortured for that matter. For anyone to torture these dogs the way he did, is plain sick. Michael Vick hasn’t served true time, and again, you’re kidding yourself if you think he has changed. Someone like this man, doesn’t change, their heart is as black as can be. As far as the HSUS (Human Society of the United States), they are sadly mistaken too, because believe me, Michael Vick is sad that he lost the money $$$$$$$, because I assure you, this was going on from 2002-2007, until he got CAUGHT, and if he hadn’t been caught, I guarantee that this scumbag would still be doing these despicable acts to these helpless dogs. Please don’t even compare Michael Vick to dogs and cats as far as deserving second chances. It’s like comparing an apple and an orange. Of course all dogs and cats deserve a second chance, they don’t kill and torture people for kicks, like Vick!

Maybe Mr. Vick needs to be tortured like he did those helpless animals, so he can feel the wrath of his criminal, inhumain actions. Anyone that would do that, for years, doesn't deserve any second chance, and certainly not a good quality of life. I say make him work with abused animals, in a kennel, slinging dog crap the rest of his life, on a tight collar and heavy chain, cause he's no better! Jerk

So you basically would prefer him dead?

Instead of helping to educate young people so that they don't make the same mistakes that he did? That's what he plans to do.

You have no clue how he was raised - if dogfighting was just an every day event in his life, etc. My daughter's relatives raised roosters for cockfighting. It has always been part of their life. While I don't condone it, you have to look at the bigger overall picture and the cultures that do condone these activities and even celebrate them. In my opinion, education is the key and Mr. Vick may be the perfect educator.

I was talking to Raelene

Society has dictated the sentence for what he did through their elected officials. He served that time and just because you don't think it was enough is no reason not to keep him from making the most of himself.

How he was raised doesn't enter into it. How henious the act he committed was doesn't enter into it. He did the crime, and he did the time.

Let him play and let let the owners morales dictate if they want to pay him.

Working with, and taking care of abused animals would be the best way to educate himself. We dont need to learn how not to treat animals, and we dont need to be punished for our cowardly, ugly, actions, he does. He probably abuses women too.
I personally know he will meet his maker some day, and will be turned away at the gate. Behind Jesus will be all the animals he tortured, and mutilated. He will burn in HELL, unless he repents, and asks for forgiveness. If they let him play again, it wont be good. The backlash would be BAD. I, for 1, will be there with rotton eggs to throw at him. There is no excuse good enough for what he's done.

Wow! I can't believe the way he is being singled out. The NFL is chock full of questionable characters. You don't have to look much further than your own Buffalo Bills. If you are a true Christian, you have FAITH that he is remorseful and repentant. And while I'm sure this is not going to be a popular sentiment,I have a bigger problem with wife and child abusers than I do with this. And pro football has a crapload of hothead roiders who wreak havoc in the lives of their friends and families.
I want to make clear...I am not condoning his actions! I find it reprehensible what he did. But I am a believer in Jesus's teachings, so I forgive him and I'm sure God will judge him fairly. We are observers on this journey, not the jury.

So, let me get this straight.
A Supreme Being, who we are taught loves both saints and sinners, doesn't have a place in His heart for the likes of Michael Vick. Is that correct?
Only that Supreme Being knows the degree of remorse Vick holds in his heart. Are we to believe that we, mere mortals, can judge better than He, who will face Vick on Judgement Day?
I find it hard to believe that this discussion boils down to certain religious beliefs. That isn't the issue.
The issue is whether Vick should be allowed to return to society and his career.
An article, a few days ago, said that one of the few NFL owners that might consider signing Vick was Ralph Wilson because he is a champion of second chances.
Does this mean that you will revile Wilson as well for his attempt to help put Vick on the right path?

I can see if he abused and tortured the animals once, or twice, and then he stopped knowing it was wrong. But he did this for YEARS, and might I add, while he was playing HERO, playing football. He did this for YEARS, and should be put away for as many "years" as he tortured and mutilated defensless animals.
Lets not forget the money he made doing it either. "Oh Yah Lots Of Money". He should give all the money he made to animal shelters. Was he smiling, like he does to his fans, while he abused the animals, enjoying every last gasp for air, and blood spater on his cloths????
I'm going to go and pray for him, and all GOD"s creatures he killed, slowly, and intently. The NFL will be just fine without him!

First, Karen, nice posts, I concur with you on many things you said. Bud, your comments and post was nicely put too.

Now it is time to clarify some real true key points here for Beth and Peter, especially Peter seeing how you were talking to me. Beth first.

Beth, you keep making reference that what Michael Vick did was a “mistake”. A mistake is bumping someone with a food cart, bumping someone into the hall, taking drugs themselves, but NOT torturing animals. Torturing an animal is not a mistake, it is deliberate horrific act, and many of your serial killers start out by maiming and killing animals before they move onto humans. Do you honestly think that people, now this is what you said Beth, if dog fighting was just an every day event in his life, etc. People already into this barbaric act of dog fighting are NOT going to listen to Michael Vick, of all people. It’s like Sarah Plain’s daughter preaching abstinence AFTER the fact. No where in America do I know where “Dog Fighting” is celebrated. Just because people are raised in a culture that may find “acts” appealing, doesn’t mean they agree with it. Do you think everyone in Spain believes in Bull Fighting? Bottom line, Michael Vick does NOT deserve to play back in the NFL for what he did. I agree with Karen, he should sling dog feces for the Humane Society for the rest of his life, and work a 9-5 like everyone else. Michael Vick has a talent, so people are supposed to turn a blind eye, I don’t think so.

Now onto Peter. Where did I say anywhere in my letter that I wanted Michael Vick dead. I think he is worthless, but I never said I wanted him dead. That is up to God to decide, and I’ll tell you what, my belief in God is very strong, and I wouldn’t want to be Vick on judgment day, because I believe God will have each dog/animal he tortured and killed by his side. Let’s get the facts straight too, very important key here: Vick was sentenced to 23 months, he served 20 in Federal prison, and is serving the rest of his sentence out in his Virginia home, give me a break, it all comes down to being a NFL star. If this was me, I’d still be in prison. As far as I’m concerned, he will do his “TRUE” time when God is ready. As far as making the most for himself, someone that has such a black heart, I do believe there is no rehabilitating them. He had his chance to make the most of himself, and he blew it! Michael Vick is a monster; a true black hearted monster that I hope gets banned from the NFL for life!

Raelene - you say that I KEEP making reference that what Michael Vick did was a “mistake”. I mentioned the word "mistake" one time in one post and it was in reference to him helping to educate young people so that they don't make the same mistakes that he did. I don't see where I "KEEP" making reference that what Michael Vick did was a mistake.

And I am so glad that you know what God is going to do to Michael Vick on Judgment Day. Since you seem to know God so well, have you ever heard "Judge not lest ye be judged"? It is not for you or anyone else to decide what will happen to him on Judgment Day. My God is not vindictive. He is forgiving.

And - back to the question - Should Michael Vick be Banned From the NFL FOR LIFE? Absolutely not. Give him a chance to earn a living. Even murderers get out of prison and are allowed to earn a living.

""A little something to think about, if you flip Dog around it spells God. I don’t think this was a mere coincidence by God, but rather a sign that dogs our in fact are best friends, and we owe them to be their voice piece""

Lay off the pipe. Please. Go back to your church group and maybe pray some more.

Vick went to prison for two years for killing and using an ANIMAL for a sport. Drug dealers, who deal drugs to our kids outside their school, or wife beaters, or DWI offenders do far less time. Let's ban someone from his professional sport b/c of what he did to AN ANIMAL.

IT'S AN ANIMAL. If you raise your animal to do something, that's what he is meant for. It has no soul. Hate to tell you, your fluffy dog at home named fluffy is going no where after he croaks or get's hit by a car.

Do you realize every year hunters hunt a multitude of animals in the wild? Oh, you think letting a 70 year old hunter shoot at a deer with a bow is humane? You know how long that animal will bleed and suffer if you don't hit it just right?

All these PETA active, DOG LOVER activist idiots need to be put out in the wild with their family and kids with a local couger prowling around. It's an animal. Food you idiot. You know in China they eat dogs right?

I hope that one day I accidentally run over your ANIMAL if you let him outside and he suffers. Maybe ill have a pro-Vick sticker on my bumper as well.

Vick will play again. Bottom line. Money speaks volume. Much more important then some stupid dog lovers opinions. Remember. ANIMAL. Say it with me. ANIMAL.

At least in a blog someone like you who get's involved in things that is none of your business you can express your opinions right?
=)

Good for you!!

No one cares though. It will change nothing.
On the outside Vick will show remorse to play again, but deep down you know he doesen't care and would do it again if it was legal. Which it should be, b/c they are ANIMALS BREED TO FIGHT. Yet in your fluffy little world of peace I dont' expect you to understand that. Say hi to fluffy for me.

Beth you seem like you’re getting upset. Isn’t this what this site is for, to discuss and have friendly debate on issues? My whole point is this, if you said mistake one time or a million, it doesn’t matter, because what Vick did was NOT a “mistake”. That’s what you do not understand. Vick didn’t make a mistake and unintentionally drown, electrocute, slam to the ground, shoot, or hang any dogs by “mistake”. He did these barbaric acts INTENTIONALLY. The references you make about God are a little childish I must say, but I know you’re angry. I won’t even touch it. Just remember that dog spelled backwards spells out GOD.

It was never a question should Vick be Banned from the NFL for Life, it was MY OPINION!

Not upset at all Raelene. Just stating my opinion. In the end, I will go home to my 3 dogs and 3 cats, 1 snake and some sort of lizard tonight. I am an animal lover and have taught all of my children to love and respect animals. A good portion of my salary goes to feed them and care for them. Many weeks I spend more on vet bills than on food for my family.

I think what Vick did to these animals was abhorrent. However, I do choose to believe that most people have good somewhere inside. His may be deeper than most people's but I choose to believe that it is there somewhere. Maybe working with abused animals will help to bring that out. Maybe he's just playing the game to get back in the Commissioner's good graces so that he will be allowed to play football again. I don't know but in the end, he deserves a chance to redeem himself.

Can we remove Nick's posts?!

Nick, I see the "animal" point. They are animals and are not human. However, do you really think it's acceptable for anyone to TORTURE an animal? Especially one that can be nurtured to help humans in ways that humans cannot help each other?!

Do you think it's OK to torture an animal by throwing them in pools with jumper cables attached to theirs ears and die such a potentially slow agonizing death? YES...THIS IS TRUE (there was proof these ANIMALs tried to fight for their lives). Sorry to be so detailed, but the truth should be told.

ALL, no one or thing or animal deserves this!!!!!!!

No torturer (redeemed, regretful or whatever) should be able to earn a living by playing/performing something that is for fame/riches if he/she ever conducts such cruel acts.

God or no god. It's just so wrong beyond imagination.

I think that he should be forced to play QB for a season. Quarterbacks are big targets and I am sure there are many big defensive players who love animals as well as lineman who might miss a block on purpose. If he played for my team I would boycott all the games they play and if I had season tickets I would demand a refund promptly. I believe his punishment would have been far worse if he didnt have fame and fortune.

Perhaps think of it this way. If a serial rapist was living next to your family, how would you feel? Yes, this is an extreme example. But I would think twice about living next to anyone who thinks it's OK to torture any living thing. I definitely would feel apprehensive in giving them fortune or fame.

John you’re right. If the person does the crime, they do the time, and that should be it. As I demonstrated earlier with some blogs, I am NOT into second chances if they are crimes towards animals, children and the elderly, why, because all three are defenseless. The whole point I believe that Michael Vick doesn’t belong back in the NFL is what he did to all those dogs. He gruesomely tortured several dogs through means of shocking, shooting, drowning, etc. through the years of 2002-2007. He should not be able to return to the NFL and have fame and good fortune due to the heinous crimes he committed. I truly believe that Vicks Bad News Kennels would still be up and running if the Feds didn’t get involved and Vick didn’t get caught. Let him get a job from 9-5 as I stated earlier, BUT, don’t let him back into a position where he will earn millions. Playing in the NFL is a privilege, and as far as I’m concerned, he lost that privilege. Vick is a monster, and anyone that could do the things he did, I do not believe he could ever be remorseful. Like I said earlier, he is remorseful of the monies he lost. The bottom line again, he got CAUGHT, but if he hadn’t, I bet he would still be torturing animals. Let’s also not forget, when Vick was doing these horrific acts to these dogs, him and his co-conspirators found this amusing. He is twisted, and doesn’t deserve to play in the NFL, as it is a privilege.

Lets put it this way John, Cho Seung-Hui, the shooter who carried out the massacre at Virginia Tech, that left 33 people dead, including himself, if he was still alive, and did his time, and was remorseful, would society put a gun back in his hand because he did the time for killing all those people????

Yes he is so rich that after the lawyers fee's and fines he has millions left. I forgot that broke homeless people dont commit crimes or go to jail. I guess you missed my point but actually helped me prove it.

the broke homeless can't run a dog ring out of their mansion. thats my point.

I would have no problem with giving Cho a gun after he served his time.

I thimk Sex offender lists are a type of double jeopardy and should be removed.

I believe that hate crime legislation is thought crime legislation. They also make certain people more "valuable". If you kill a black man as a white man and have said a racist joke in your life, you should be treated the same as if you killed any person. The crime is killing a person, the reason why should only matter in finding a motive to improve the evidence against the killer, not to give a stiffer penalty.

Everybody knows Vick-you hear his name, automatically you think of dog fighting. If Michael Vick plays for NFL, America will be cheering a dog fighter. Young people are attracted to "bad boys" (which is why the computer game "Grand Theft Auto" became a major hit, but this is no fictional computer game-this is a real life person and prestigious NFL)-America's young, along with motivations of a very poor deteriorating economy-will want their own pit bulls and become like Michael Vick-the DOG FIGHTER. The name of the NFL will be associated with dog fighting, because you all let a dog fighter play. You will be sending a message to America "Dog fighting is glamorous and makes you wealthy" because you will have a dog fighter playing the prestigious NFL.

Yet dog fighting rings are common sources of income for gangs and violent criminals who make anywhere between $50,000 to $100,000 per dog fight per the HSUS. Per FBI and police, dog fighting rings also often distribute illegal weapons and illegal narcotics - which will be used as instruments of violence such as armed robberies against citizens of the United States.

Don't we have enough violence in America without glorifying a dog fighter?

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss5801a1.htm

"An estimated 50,000 persons die annually in the United States as a result of violence-related injuries. Homicide is the second leading cause of death for persons aged 15--24 years, the third leading cause for persons aged 25--34 years, and the fourth for persons aged 1--14 years."

Thank you for your time and reading. I am truly begging you to please do not let Michael Vick be a role model for our children-please do not perpetuate violence by glorifying this man. "One of the most dangerous things that can happen to a child is to kill or torture an animal and get away with it," Margaret Meade, Anthropologist. Dog fighting should never become glamorous. No amount of PR can erase what Vick has done, and he will always be associated with dog fighting.

That's what I wrote to Roger Goodell and sent snail mail.
Along with the USDA report :-)

Because he lives in the USA (and not Cuba,or China,or N Korea) is the reason he can try to make a living anyway he can. This is not a league issue, as they can't discriminate based on this. The owners are a different story. If they choose to flex their moral muscles, and ignore Vick, the same thing is accomplished without the frickin bureaucracy!

well well, lets see ... he created a box to trap his female dogs in, so to be raped by paid owners of male pitt bulls. he also removed all of her teeth so she couldn't interfere with the raping! he hung and tortured his "non winning" dogs in unspeakable and indescribable acts, that he himself participate and witnessed, with only money and power fueling him. he used weaker ones as training opponents for his fighters! he lived a double life and i am sorry, but he has not done enough to be allowed in a forum that he can excel in money and popularity and remind us of his cruelty he imposed on innocent, beautiful, strong dogs, who till this day carry the scars and history!
what he should do is ...
-dog walking
-dog washing
-vet asst. in emergency rooms for all animals
-asst. in euthanize normal dogs and cats that go unwanted or unadoptable.
-he should clean up after sick and abused dying animals.
-he should see and work in places that care for all kinds of animals.
-he needs direct exposure with them.
yea, some of you don't look at animals as important as humans, but we are caretakers of them and GOD created all creatures ... GREAT and SMALL!!! mike vick should not play in the NFL ... period.
you've done you physical time in prison, now do your penance with the animals and learn how to respect and be grateful just for another chance, which some of us never get.
