Crash with minor injuries reported at Route 33 and Wortendyke Road
A motor-vehicle accident is blocking traffic at Route 33 and Wortendyke Road. Minor injuries reported. East Pembroke Fire Department and Mercy medics are responding.
Another one today? There was a three vehicle accident yesterday at the intersection that shut down RT33 in the afternoon.
This intersection is notorious!
While I don't know what caused the two separate accidents I suggest that people need to pay more attention when they are driving, stop texting and talking on their phones, and stop speeding. This is the same thing we see over and over again.
Billie. Any idea as to why that intersection is "notorious" for accidents? It appears, on Google view, anyways, to be (almost) a perpendicular intersection. Is there something there that inhibits a clear view, one way or the other (trees, shrubbery, slight dips in the roadway)? Or, do you think it's simply because of driver inattentiveness/over-familiarity (or, possibly, unfamiliarity) with that location - or, just plain bad driving habits?
Ed - I grew up in Corfu and drove to Batavia frequently, mostly using Rt. 33 (occasionally using Rt. 5). The speed limit on 33 was 55mph at the time (I believe it still is), but unless you were riding with my father, much faster speeds were usually used. Combine that and your reference to "driver inattentiveness/over-familiarity", and there's trouble brewing.
It seems to me, Wortendyke is a pretty well-traveled road (it would be interesting if there are stats available -- Tim Hens?), more so than most roads that cross Route 33. There's good visibility, I think, in all directions. There are inattentive drivers everywhere. I would suspect it's an even distribution on all roads, statistically speaking. So my guess, and it's just a guess, is there are more accidents here, as a result of the combination of the 55 mph zone on Route 33 here and a higher volume of cross traffic, so, as a matter of statistical probability, there would be more accidents.
Not that this isn't a common occurrence at many intersections but when I'm going from Batavia towards Corfu somebody almost always blows right through the stop sign on Wortendyke and then rambles down route 33 in front of me below the speed limit.
Just last week a moron that lives on the south side of 33 within a half mile of Wortendyke barely slowed down coming off Wortendyke from the north and pulled right out in front of me just to come to a complete stop waiting for a break in eastbound traffic to turn left into his driveway. I'm quite certain this idiot lives there as I've gone by there a few times since then and saw that car in the driveway. And before you say it... no... this person is NOT an "old person that shouldn't be driving anymore", he appears to be around 25-30.
