Suzanne Corona has yet to agree to carry 'I Stole At South Beach' signs

By Howard B. Owens

No charges have been filed yet against Suzanne Corona for allegedly trashing the buffet at South Beach on Sept. 30, and owner Ken Mistler remains ready to drop the charges if she agrees to carry these signs for four hours on East Main Street, Batavia.

Mistler had the signs made up more than a week ago in anticipation of Corona signing a contract admitting she stole from South Beach, but then Corona reportedly became hospitalized and has been unavailable since.

Corona is suspected of walking into South Beach with a purse full of baggies and then trying to fill them up with buffet items before wait staff interfered. When a manager intervened, Corona allegedly began dumping the baggies back on the buffet.

The value of the trashed buffet, plus the lost afternoon business, cost the restaurant more than a $1,000, according to Mistler, which means if Corona doesn't agree to carry the signs she faces at least one felony charge.

Batavia's notorious woman is expected in court Wednesday for sentencing on her public lewdness conviction. As part of a plea deal, an adultery count was dropped. Corona admitted to a sexual act with a man not her husband on a picnic table in Farrall Park in June.

This isn't any of my business, but that hasn't stopped me or many others on this site before. I have very little sympathy for thieves regardless of the reasoning. But this seems a bit self-serving and mean-spirited on Mr. Mistler's part. I can understand how upset he is. Getting his $ 1,100.00 back, which Ms Corona cost him is something he is certainly entitled to and should be the ultimate objective. I don't think having her parade up and down the sidewalk wearing these signs will bring in any business. A better solution, in my opinion, would be to make her work it off at one of his businesses, if she's unable to make restitution; doesn't have to be South Beach. I'm sure there's something menial she can do. For example, clean the bathrooms and floors after closing. Mr. Mistler probably has someone doing that who relies on the paycheck, have that person do something else for the period of time that Ms. Corona is doing it. I don't think humiliation as punishment serves the community well. Working it off to pay back damages does.

Normally I would be all for the signs. In this case, I do not think that she would learn from her mistakes. Besides the hubby and I went back to South Beach last Friday for the first time since they reopened and we ended up leaving. Tried to order off the menu to be told that they had just decided combos were not available on Friday or Saturday nights anymore. The menu didn't state that nor did the waitress until AFTER we gave our order. There wasn't any sign that said no combos on weekends. It wasn't like it was a special. It was steak and shrimp scampi for $20. Waitress said sorry nothing we can do. We ended up going leaving immediately and going elsewhere and had a wonderful dinner for a lot less than what we would have paid at South Beach. South Beach's loss. In the above case, she won't learn. Doing hard work or time would be better to have her learn.

I heard about this a few days ago. I think that giving someone an option to do something like this instead of having to pay restitution of $1,100 is a very selfless gesture on Mr. Mistlers part.

Dave- I too recognize that this is NOMB, but I feel compelled to add my 50th of a dollar.
The sign idea, while a great idea, is nothing new. Adulteresses were branded with the "scarlet A", being put in a yoke at the town square, variations of the same concept of public humiliation have existed for centuries.
Also, $1100 would get him nowhere near the amount of advertising for his business. The level of media exposure that this incident has received in Rochester and Buffalo TV news is priceless. And the sign concept just perpetuates the 15 minutes of fame this local "celebrity" is basking in.
I also would like to add that what Mr. Mistler is doing is circumventing the system. Our bloated, bureaucratic, and biased system. Some would say that this is arrogant and aloof, that Mr. Mistler feels above the law and its process. I say bravo to you sir. If an agreement can be worked out between two people, and we can save court time, why not?

So my thinking is that this woman had sex on a public table in a public park, you honestly think walking with a sign is going to do nothing but give her more media attention. Every news channel will be following her up and down the street feeding into her need for attention. I for one am sick and tired of hearing about her. Make her pay for the crime and sit in jail like everyone else would have to do.

Ever get that feeling someone is watching you?
Ken did a radio interview last week. He said Mrs.Corona was on 11 different cameras while she was in South Beach and there is more than 11 cameras in the place. He didn't say how many more just that there is more. Thats just to creepy for me, I understand the need for security maybe one on the money and one on the door. I don't like to be spyed on. I wounder how many cameras are in his other businesses?
As for the sign I don't like the idea thats why we have a court system.

I for one like this Idea. Prison is becoming less of a deterrent every year. Being publicly humiliated seems more of a fitting resolution. Siting in prison will do nothing for her. Beside cost the tax payers money. First with her trial, then with housing her in jail. Since she hasn't actually been charged with anything yet we can't estimate the cost of her imprisonment yet. I think four hours of humiliation with out any court proceedings is a better deal for the tax payer.

Bryant, I would have to agree eating at a restaurant with 11 cameras watching you, isn’t all that appealing. I’m also not so sure these signs and this news is all that good for business.

South Beach is definatley off my list of places to eat, just not comfortable with 11+ cameras monitoring me when I'm eating.
As far as the signs go, it certainly won't help business now that everyone knows about all the cameras.
Put her in jail, the system doesn't care how much it costs, its not their money. Then when she gets out of jail, we can pay for her medical, and mental health expenses.Like I've said before, the courts, and the way they waste our money needs some transparency, believe me, I've seen the waste first hand.

Cameras or no cameras it won't stop me from eating there. They're there to protect the business not to watch me eat. Who cares which hand I use to hold a fork or how many times I chew my food before swallowing?

I also think the sign is a good idea. What is 4 hours of of humiliation? Nothing compared to the alternative.

Just my 2¢.

Kim, enjoy, some of us don't like the intrusion. It's bad enough that big brother is watching us, now little brother has joined the act.
Given the events of her past, do you really think/beleive this woman is even capable of humiliation?

Frank- "the law of attraction" is going to be in effect now. I challenge you to enter any business, and not see security cameras. They are everywhere.

Oct 19, 2010, 10:43am Permalink

Bud, where they are, I'm not, if it is a choice, there are many fine resturants that don't have 11+ cameras. For heavens sake, even banks don't have that much surveilence, it's plain overkill. Might even make one a little nervous when using the restroom, not an accussation, just a thought you shouldn't have to ponder when you go out to eat. Thats my opinion, like I said, if your comfortable with it, enjoy, I'm not, I guess I'll just order a pizza, and if the delivery guy shows up with a camera stuck to his head, he/she can take the food back.
The law of attraction may come into play, but this may be the only time more cameras will be outside of South Beach, than inside.

Ken, I'm curious, have you had any more theft at Pet Smart since you applied this approach?

In light of the increase or perhaps just awareness of shoplifting (Target comes to mind) would it be such a bad thing that Batavia is know as a community that doesn't tolerated stealing?
That there is a very public consequence for breaking the law.

Oct 19, 2010, 11:07am Permalink

Brenda, theft is on the rise,as always in a poor economy, most theives are repeat offenders, as this is their career choice, if you don't put them in jail, they just find another place to steal from, and like everything else, the honest people pay for it. Most theives only get caught once in awhile, and if you think making them carry a sign for a few hours a day is going to prevent them from stealing again, I got some land for sale you may be interested in. The sign idea will work on someone who isn't a career criminal, and took a chance because money was tight, but the career thiefs will laugh all the way to their next victim if this is their punishment.
Here is what I think, make it mandatory that if caught shoplifting, stealing, taking something that isn't yours to take, it should generate an automatic charge of either petit larceny, or grand larceny, with no choice whether or not to press charges. If convicted, your picture goes out to every business and displayed on a wall of shame, as well as whatever punishment the court hands down. Now you have both punishment , humiliation, and the business's will know when a dishonest "customer" is in their establishment.

Oct 19, 2010, 12:09pm Permalink

Frank what you say is very true to a certain extent. Most theft from department stores isn't diapers, formula, or even a loaf of bread. It's the latest fashions. So I don't buy into the whole "poor economy" concept.
They steal because they can. They steal because they believe the security isn't tight. They steal because they believe that even if they are caught few will know.

There will always be a percentage that doesn't care who sees them carry a "I Stole From" sign perhaps the rest will. But more importantly the community from which they stole will know them.
Oh btw, I am looking for some land to rent near UMMC for gardening. Let me know.

Amazing....Frank I understand how simply minded you and Mallow are... Why would I have cameras on people eating? All of the cameras are strategically placed to cover Aisles, entrances, cash registers, the buffet tables, outside sidewalks, and yes some cameras do pan over some tables. Since you both must own your own businesses you speak from experience. You must have the most stand up patrons and citizens that come into your establishments at all times. Unfortunately I do not. I feel it is my responsibility to protect my customers at all costs, and expenses. If I cannot deter a person from stealing or claiming a slip and fall or robbery, then I am putting my customers at risk. A simply deter-ant of cameras will keep the seasoned thief from stealing, As you both know from being self employed shrinkage is the number one reason that drives the cost of goods up.And as for the non-seasoned thief " Corona" I use the cameras to prosecute. I caught dozens of shop lifters at Petmart, and I am sure deterred hundreds. I also caught Nathan Wilson who tried "Stabbing" one of my workers with a knife, Had not been for the cameras we would not have had the evidence or the facial recognition needed. These cameras where also used countless times by batavia police for robberies at the gas station from across the street, and one time by the FBI for a "bomb " threat at angellica. A person used the pay phone and it was my cameras that caught the get away car.Now Having alcohol on premises at Southbeach leaves an entire new window open for law suits. How many drinks? Was person actually their? Was a fake I.D. used? I have had two walk out at southbeach with out paying already. I have saved these non- paying customers on the computers hard drive and hope to see them enter the restaurant again, I will be the first one to call the authorities and hope these non-payers will simply pay for what they stole. I do not think I am above the law or have any kind of "High" on my request for the sign walk. On too many occasions the thief's I caught were given community service. Picking up cigarette butts in front of the jail does not deter shop lifters from entering my establishment. I am the victim of the crime after all. So if i can exploit an individual identity to his or her neighbors and deter others from doing wrong at my establishments why shouldn't I.AS for the 99.999% of the people I encounter ever day that are the loyal customer and friend "THANK YOU".. You are the ones that drive this community forward and I am simple in the middle. And i let you know you are safe in my establishments and I will not tolerate the .001% of bad guys from from myself or my employees from giving you best price or service we can offer in either Next level Fitness, Southbeach, or any rental property. And i apologize in advance.
"WE WILL MAKE MISTAKES, WE ARE NOT PERFECT.

Mr Mallow couldn't do anything to help downtown as a council member so he should just shut up and allow a person to make Batavia a place we all want to stay in and have dinner. Suzanne Corona is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to people trying to get by. I just hope she doesn't try and sue you for the fall in the resturant. One final thought if people don't want to come in and eat at South Beach then who cares.

Hmmm overreaction, I dont see it that way Charlie, he took you and Frank to task on your comments. As others have pointed out there are cameras everywhere now, when you use an atm, in the aisles in stores, even in the traffic lights. It comes to this because people will do things and then blatantly lie about it. Look at the ceiling of Tops or any other store. They will see everything you are purchasing. Complain about being watched all you want, its not gonna stop it from happeneing and all you do in your little boycott is limit your own opportunities for eating, shopping and so on.

As for the sign boards, I think it's great, even if it doesnt embarass the perps it's publicizes them so everyone knows what they are about. If I was a small business owner and I saw this guy who was walking around with this sign come in my store, then I would be following him around obviously making sure he knew I was wise to his habits, so what was the downside to this again? Face it the justice system in it's current form is slow, ineffective for anything but the most horrific and public crimes. The whole system id flawed govt & judidcial. I look to things like Mr. Mistler is doing as the first ripples of change coming. It will eventually change, and its not gonna be pretty when it does. We may not see it, our children may not even see it but it's coming nonetheless.

Kudos Mr. Mistler, I dined in your establishment for the first time last week. It was after 1pm and I didnt expect it to be as good as it was after lunch hours but I was surprised to find it excellent. Keep up the good work. Now I see why people rave about it and missed it while it was closed.

Has anyone wondered if Mrs. Corona might be bi-polar as in maybe a paranoid schizophrenic? She's gone through most of her adult life(as far as I can tell), without any incidences before the "tryst on the table" and then the "chew and screw" at Ken's establishment. There's a reason that she is acting irrationally. If, in fact she does have some kind of mental disease, it doesn't absolve her of her bad behavior, but it does lend credence of why she is suddenly acting this way. I'm abstaining from commenting on what Ken M. should do, it's his business and he can run it anyway he sees fit. Who are we to argue? He is successful for a reason.

I don't have a problem with Ken wanting her to carry a sign,He should be able to shove all the food she stole down her throat too. Just like jail, she can work and get a meal. As far as the camera's go,I dont care, they're there to protect his business and his customer's,you really can't go anywhere without seeing camera's-store's,bar's,casino's,bank's,school's,police station's,fire house's,etc. What's the difference?,camera's or other patron's looking at you while you eat? Camera's were put in because people don't do the right thing all the time, people complain about the court system, jury duty, and jails being overloaded, what's wrong with a little hometown justice? She has to carry a sign for four hours,he didn't ask to have her hands cut off. It was an idea from Ken to have her carry the sign,He's not denying her day in court, just another form of punishment other than going to jail. For the people that want her to go through the court system and jail,Dont worry,at this pace she'll be in the "system" living off your taxes because she's "mentally disabled" and unable to work...

p.s.-Ken, I've never met you but my wife and I had a great meal at South Beach and If I had a problem with the specials,I would have asked to speek to the manager or you if you were there,I'm sure something could have been worked out with the woman that posted earlier.

Ordinarily I am in support of two private citizens working out a solution to a problem without involving the courts or police. If Ms. Corona agrees to carry the signs, like I said, it's none of my business. She surely owes you and should pay, no excuse. I don't care and I won't come to Batavia to watch. I just don't like the precedent it sets, or the attention it's going to garner from the media. Is this what Batavia wants to known as? Not only did the city charge her with adultery, now we're into public humiliation? Do we want to go back to 1710? I don't see this as about her, but about the community. Is it worth it Mr. Mistler, just to make a point that you better not steal from Ken Mistler? But hey, whatever, it won't reflect on me personally.

But if you're suggesting I,m " whining about it" in reference to Ms. Corona, or any person who may have mental or physical issues, I beg to differ, my "wall of shame" was targeting career criminals, you know, like the ones that come from the city, to steal in Batavia. Maybe you don't like me, which is a point I really could care less about, but at least put a little bit of fact into your posts, A little information goes a long way, take a look at what it costs the retail industry each year, not only in loss of inventory, but the dollars spent on security
and asset protection. Every item sold in retail has this cost filtered into the MSRP. As you might guess, the good old honest consumers pick up the tab. That, Lorrie is a far cry from picking on someone who is obviously going through some sort of mental, or phyisical problem , which has led to " bizarre behavior", which should warrant attention.
Lorrie, Here's an idea, back up your posts, or find someone else to "yammer" at.
If you want to have negative debates, I'm game, but Howard may get too many complaints, cause I know, you'll
be dining on crow. I don't want Howard to deal with any greif over comments by you, or myself. Do everyone a favor Lorrie, don't respond to my posts, and the same is true for me, end of story, Lorrie.

Does any body remember.. About 7-8 years ago a student from the USA was in Singapore and decided to vandalize and spray graffiti on 20 something cars. He was caught and found guilty. He was sentenced to be flogged 7 times in public. They say the pain is so intense that a doctor is on hand to revive the individual after the first blow, so he can feel the next ones.. Of course some people where up in arms about this in the USA and wanted us to practically send our troops to defend this guy.Singapore is virtually crime free. Its not just because of the pain but also the public display in front of their neighbors and peers. So yes Charlie I can see CNN right now airing.. Small town in upstate New York is tired of shoplifters and business owners are looking for justice in their own way. "Public Humiliation".. When I did this at Petmart I sincerely believe that Charlie Smith was ashamed of himself and most of all vowed never to try this anywhere else.. AS Charlie walked those days I had calls from all over the country ever day. Ever single one was positive and almost ever one stated all they wanted to see was his face.. I am sure this method can be tweaked and made more effective but until then my solution stands as I see fit and and hope everyone can see my point of view for what it is worth.. Very interesting folks. I have a problem with a private citizen, (not any particular citizen Ken) giving a alledged thief a choice of punishment, so to speak. Where is the D.A. on all of this? Where are the judges and the courts on the park deal that preceded the buffet deal? How long are the citizens of Batavia going to have to put up with people like this. And we wonder why people like this act the way they do?

Howard, I just didn't see the same group jump on Bryant for saying the same thing.I believe Lorie suggested, or attempted to twist my words around to make an argument that wasn't there. I also believe I said or suggested that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
But my gripe is this, and for all of you who have comprehension problems, please get someone who knows how to read and comprehend what they read, to read it to you. I said I was uncomfortable eating in any resturant that has 11 + cameras, maybe I have a phobia, and maybe that's my problem, I didn't suggest anyone avoid Mr. Mistler's business, But seeing how Mr.Mistler wants to take it to the next level, I have a plan I'm sure he would be in favor of. All that I need to do is contact the police to make sure it is legal.I got me a pen and a paper, and I made up my own little sign. And when Ms.Corona attracts all that attention from the media, they will get a little something extra. So go ahead Ken, put her out there for the world to see, I'm sure the media will get a bonus to cover while they are in the vicinity. Let public opinion decide what they think of all your cameras, as I'm sure I'm not the only person who finds it discomforting.
Michele, no one is up in arms, all I said was I PERSONALLY, would not frequent a resturant with 11 + cameras, that is my perogative, all the negativity started because I made that simple statement, so yeah everyone, get over yourselves.
Your welcome,... Ken

Bob, I 've used google earth many times, and have never seen anyones dinner table, no matter how much I max the image. Are you suggesting I'm a hermit because I won't eat where there are 11 + cameras when I can find somewhere that doesn't. If everyone on the face of the earth doesn't care about the cameras, I do, and that is my right, its my money, I'll spend it where I'm most comfortable. Are all of you who don't like, or are opposed to my statement, friends of Mistlers. Had Ken not jumped on me for exercising my right, I would have let it go at that, he decided to make it personal.
His next move will probably entail whining to Howard about my comments. There is no debate here, I'll decide where I want to shop, eat, get my car fixed, buy a tv, and to what extent and where I spend my money, that is only up to me, if you don't like it, thats just tough s#%t. Maybe when Ken was on the radio, he should have kept his mouth shut about how many cameras he has monitoring his business. And I love how in the same paragraph, he talks out both sides of his mouth, read his comment for yourselves, it's right there in black and white. Take the rose colored glasses off, and it jumps right out at you.

Hey! you have to give kudos where they are warranted, the whole sign carying debate is working just fine even if no one chooses to advertise for the establishment. The key word being (advertise) is working just fine, right or morally wrong it is not for me to judge.
By the way, ever been to Vegas? they have cameras watching the cameras, in this day and age it is everyday in all walks of life, security rules.

Unfortunately in this day and age, cameras are a way of life. Also more so in an area where food is in the open and not always supervised. Many warped minds might think that if the beef wellington wasn't on the buffet. perhaps that cow might still be grazing in the pasture. Add a "little something" to the meat, make people get sick, and then they won't want to eat it again. If this or any other incident did not occur, NO ONE would have ever known just how many cameras there actually were. All eating establishments have to be accountable for anything that deals with food and drinks. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the places in Batavia, and certainly restaurants in other towns and cities, have the same amount of cameras and security as does South Beach-

Hmm I have an idea, Hey Frank lets see if this belief of yours is just a convenience for this forum or you really dont feel comfortable. Where do you like to eat or frequent? I'll bet that if we go ask THAT establishment how many cameras they have it will probably be equal to or surpass South Beach. Does that mean you'll stop going there.... I'm betting you wont. But of course you'll never be honest with that now cause it'll make you look kinda disingenuous....wont it ;)
