Pembroke on short list for possible vets cemetery location, but may face local opposition

By Howard B. Owens

There may be some opposition in Pembroke to placing a veterans cemetery on one of two parcels in the town, according to Bill Joyce, the new veterans services administrator for the county.

Joyce raised the issue with the Public Service Committee today during his first departmental review with the Genesee County Legislature.

He said the Town of Pembroke Planning Board may have some members concerned about taking farm land off the tax roles.

Pembroke Town Supervisor Ed Mileham confirmed this evening that he thinks there may be some opposition to converting farmland to a veterans cemetery, but said the issue hasn't come before the planning board yet.

"There's no doubt in my mind there could be some opposition because Pembroke is a farming community and they like their farm atmosphere here," Mileham said.

There's also likely to be support for the project because it will benefit the community, Mileham said.

"It would be something no other community got and we would be fortunate to get it," Mileham said. "Would we have to give something up, would we give up some tax dollars for it? Sure, but it's something a lot of communities would want to have and we've got good spots right here."

The advantages for Pembroke, Mileham said is attractive properties, close proximity to Buffalo and Rochester and easy access to the Thruway.

These are points in Pembroke's favor that Joyce, a Pembroke resident, also made and said the two locations in Pembroke under consideration make more sense than the location on the short list in Erie County, which is an industrial area.

"To me, not just because it's Genesee County, a veterans cemetary should be peaceful and serene," Joyce said.

Added Legislator Mary Pat Hancock, "and the locations I've seen are just gorgeous."

Mileham said the two locations in Pembroke under consideration by the Veterans Administration are at Indian Falls Road and Route 77, about 135 acres, and a similar-sized location at the end of Cleveland Road.

About 50 or 60 acres of farmland would be taken out of production for the project, Mileham said.

The supervisor said the indications he's received from officials with the VA working out of Bath -- currently the closest vets cemetery to Buffalo and Rochester -- are that Indian Falls and Route 77 is a favored location.

County Manager Jay Gsell told legislators that the short list of sites has changed a couple of times as the VA came across unwilling sellers, inappropriate locations or environmental issues. Site planning experts with the VA have reduced the list now to these three possible locations.

It will take willing sellers at any one of the three locations to move the project forward.

As it is, construction is at least two-and-a-half years away.

Jack - I think I mentioned "making light" of the situation. Have you lost your funny bone? Personally, I think it would be great for our area.

The problem is Lisa it didnt makes sense at all and there is no "connection" obvious to anyone but yourself. Its not a matter of not havig a funnybone it a matter of not understanding the correlation of a Veterans Cemetary vs Low income housing? It's not only apples vs oranges, its apples vs cucumbers.

I explained. It was "light." You and Jack should help each other find your funny bones. Didn't I also say it would be a fabulous idea for our area? You are picking personally.

I explained, but apparently that didn't work for you. I'm sorry you're left in the dark. Can I send you a flashlight? It might help you find your funny bone. You made your point. Let go and move on please.

low income housing vs Veteran cemetary..... only connection I am making is that you think people who need low income housing belong in a cemetary. There has been no explanation oher than telling those that didnt get it that they have no sense of humor. Explanations so far were you were "making light" or a "pun" on affordable housing in a comment area about a veterans cemetary.... no real correlation.

by the way just in case you dont know what a pun is: Pun: the humorous use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest its different meanings or applications, or the use of words that are alike or nearly alike in sound but different in meaning; a play on words.

Whats the matter Lisa, can't explain the comment around the foot in your mouth. Typical for people like yourself when backed into a spot. I'm sure you wont be giving any legit explanation on the statements you made, thats for sure.

Lisa, I have a funny bone and your original comment is WTF? Does not make sense nor is it hilarious in any sense. Heck, the Brits' dry sense of humor would not see it as funny either.

John - I clarified the statement. If you didn't find it funny, that's fine. I didn't slap, offend, or not support the idea of a Vet Cemetery. Kudos to any and everyone one who serves our Country!

Kyle - I'd like to find another spot for where you believe my foot is. Please contact me, because I think you can help!

Lisa, when you make light of a situation about a Veteran's Cemetery being brought to Genesee County. Then yes it is offensive to Veterans. Epecially, when it is not a laughing matter as well for that of the elderly, disable and low income families.

You tried to make a joke. it flopped. I know you didn't mean anything by it. I'm a vet and not offended. It's no big deal.
On the other hand, I hope they place in Genesee County.

Sorry Lisa I dont think I could help you, 1) I dont think your flexible enough to get your foot there, 2) I dont think theres room in your rear end for your head and your foot at the same time.

Thank you Mr. Roach for seeing through my miserable attempt at humor. I appreciate your support. Your open-mindedness is refreshing.

Kyle, this is over the edge. You seem go out of your way to make your remarks very, VERY personal - direct and open (more so with women than men in my brief observation). Please stop. Please. Thank you. This is an open adult forum. As equal participants an exchange of thoughts and ideas in a healthy fashion is important. Personal attacks at each other does not help. I am as guilty as anyone in getting out of hand and needed to reel myself in. Again, I ask that you stop.

John, I wish you saw things as I intended them. There was never NEVER any indication of making fun of Veteran's, elderly, disabled, or low income. Those are the exact causes I support on a daily basis. The miserable attempt at humor was directed at the Town of Pembroke and not Veterans, elderly, disabled, or low income any ANY manner. It's unfortunate that you didn't see that.

Lisa I agree with John Roach, your joke flopped but I sincerely doubted you had any bad intent. I am Vet and am in now way way offended.

But I do so hope that the cemetary comes to Genesee County

Thank you, Mark, for being able to sort through that darn miserable attempt. It truly was separate from the Vet issue, and meant only directed to recent (other) housing issues in the same area. I hope to be able to sharpen my approach so that it is received with full and appropriate intent.

Just continuing the discussion in the tone you set Lisa, you dont get to TRY to tell me what to do or get all haughty without it coming back to you. You want it to stop then simply apologize otherwise I will simply return what you give. You were upity about everyone not understanding your joke, instead of explaining it you returned insulting remarks about peoples sense of humor. You dont get to dictate to someone after a smart aleck remark to let go and drop it, noe when you continue w name calling or get a new hobby comments. Further escalated by offering to put your foot someplace. I can understand others minimalizing it but you need to realize that not everyone is gonna back down to you. I escalated nothimg just merely returned fire as the saying goes. Where it goes from here depends on your attitude alone.

As for trying to characterize my confrontations in here as mostly on women that is just flat out wrong as many men in here can tell you. I stick to the issues dont rely on presonal attacks unless attacked in such a manner first. The only weakness I see im my discussion in here is being a little pedantic at times but I am working on that. But thank you again for another biased characterization based on almost no facts. Ever consider politics Lisa?

Kyle - I immediately with my 2nd posting made an attempt to clarify my poor attempt at humor. Others seemed to get it. With regard to "backing down to me" - did I intimidate you? I don't see that popping out anywhere, nor has anyone else indicated that I did. Nor do I believe I, intentionally or otherwise, ever refer to such an act. And about "trying to characterize" - I was very plain that it was referenced to my limited interaction/observation with you via this site. An observation ... brief ... not an assumption or name calling. "Another bias?" Yes, we are all and should be entitled to our own opinions (no matter what they are based on). I don't understand why you struggle with things in other people that you admit to struggling with yourself - or consider a weakness - or an area to work on? (this bias thing...I don't have the wording right, so please take a deep breath - please don't over react). You do attack personally - and not when an issue is directed at you. Or at least in our exchanges. IN OUR EXCHANGES. If you don't agree with me on any issue, you first and foremost make it personal - always. ?? :(

Never said I was a better person Lisa, like John W said above we all make mistakes, however your ever escalating sarcasms and dodges of that mistake is what aggravated me. This is an adult forum, and when you begin to offer flashlights to find non exsistant funnybones is one thing, but when you order someon to drop it, or to find another hobby thats getting rude, then offering to put your foot somewhere on my person crosses the line. Your sarcastic apology is not what I was looking for I never claimed to be a better person than you, nor wanted you to cry uncle but you do have to realize when you order people around and get that sarcastic with them. some people arent gonna back down just because you say to especially when you made the mistake to begin with. I have admitted mistakes here and aquiecesced to poit of view that I did not have when in discussion here. Why is it so hard to expect the same from others. Why should I have to stop on your say so. If you were adressed in the same you've been adressing me would you just drop it?

Maybe if you drop the sarcasm I will drop it, and we can both walk away with some life lessons here. Until then it hasnt really changed.

My perception of the comment was that you were either slighting the Veterans Cemetary comparing it to affordable housing, or you were slighting people that use affordable housing in saying that they belong in a cemetary. Both I find highly offensive, seeing people commented already I added a reasonable 2 cents (after looking in TheBatavians archives all the way to March for references to pembroke and affordable housing) You copped an attitude and told me that was the end of it. Well without understanding your reasons or references (and your unwillingness to plainly explain the reference) that got my dander up, and you dont tell me what do do when I'm that annoyed cause it just makes me more determined to stand my ground.

I hope you understand this cause I am really annoyed at some of the innuendo and generalizations you've attempted to hang around my neck. I will get personal the more you try to dictate my actions to me like to drop it or find another hobby et. al....

As for your clarification that didnt happen in your 2nd posting, as a matter of fact people questioned it even more after your second posting. Please explain to me how your comment

"Sorry, Howard. A pun on local municipalities who aren't welcoming affordable housing for minorities (disabled, elderly, low income). I am punchy."

is in any way a clarification of your original comment.....

"On a light note - the elderly, disabled, and low income will then have affordable housing!"

The story was about a Veterans Cemetary, so your comment was neither light or a pun, thus the questions as to your meaning and your explanation. If you cant see this then I give up.

kyle,i knew you would come back..look at post number 4.....lisa said she was sorry.......then you went on ranting and raving on her...
don't you have any manners? you owe the lady an may think you are so smart and better than a lot of people on here,
but the really smart people, see right through you.....good night, and don't forget your apology........
i don't believe you have it in you,so i'll do it for you....lisa,i'm sorry kyle acted up and had to write a book, trying to slam you...

I have plenty of manners David, your stating that I think I am smarter and better than others doesnt make that a fact, and is no more true than smart people seeing through me because theres nothing to see through. I owe no apology, this is not the first time Lisa has pulled this she did this also during the 420 Emporium protest, slamming Jason's family members, calling them two faced hypocrites for organizing the protest claiming inside info. Then when others spoke up she reversed herself claiming she didnt say what she said. The final post on that forum summed up Lisa's attitude perfectly which seems to shine through hee once again as well

Apparently Lisa has confused her right to _have_ an opinion with having an imaginary right to not have her opinion challenged when she expresses it in public. In a free society, having the right of free speech is not the right to be right.

Compare this dialog on this forum and the one from that story(… ) and you can see a pattern of behavior developing. I'm sure it'll pop up again. Now I am done with this subject,
