News roundup: Oatka Creek death termed 'accidental'

posted by Philip Anselmo in crime, wbta, police.

Check out WBTA for these and other stories:

  • LeRoy village police have determined that the death of 41-year-old Glen Kanaley, whose body was found in Oatka Creek earlier this week, was accidental. They say that he likely fell from a railroad trestle. The autopsy performed in Monroe County showed that Kanaley died of massive internal injuries.
  • It's true — the 1,200-pound "show steer" that escaped from the Genesee County Fairgrounds Monday is still on the lam. Dan Fischer relates the latest run-in with the elusive bovine: Last night, Dr. Cricket Johnson and about 50 others located the steer in some fields, popped it with a tranquilizer, but then lost it in some "thick growth." When it "resurfaced" later in the night, the tranquilizer had worn off. Fire crews even brought out heat-seeking search devices. But to no avail. We're told that it was last spotted hanging in an old railroad bed east of the fairgrounds. (I don't know about anybody else, but I find this the most interesting story I've tracked in the past two months. Many kudos to Dan Fischer for making it so much fun.)
  • No cause has yet been determined in the fire that destroyed part of Cristina's Restaurant almost a week ago.

This may be a coincidence but I've seen the Clor's truck constantly cruising Batavia and the surrounding countryside.

I for one fail to see the humor in this considering the problems a small businessman (CLORS) has had serving this comunity and surrounding town with a very good product at a fair price. Chuck is and always has been a cuminity minded person, worked to make Batavia a better place to live and raise children. I can have at my residence a chicken bar-b-que, smoke meat and food every day outside, and so can you, but Clores cant?????? every other bar and food service in Batavia can, but Clores cant?? The point that I am trying to make is: Give Clors Meat Market and Chuck a break, enough is enough.

Is there going to be a classified section coming soon? Somebody's looking for a sense of humor.

The problem with Clor’s is that he breaks the zoning law for his neighborhood, and he knows it. When he bought the business, he knew it was zoned not to allow the outdoor cooking he does. The prior owner had no problem obeying the law and had respect for his neighbors. And don’t be silly and compare the chicken cooked in your backyard with a business doing it with hundreds of chicken being cooked. And don't compare it with the other businesses who cook outside. The obey the zoning laws, Clor's has a proven track record of not doing it. Maybe he should obey the zoning laws like the rest of us have to. Clor’s has pushed the issue. His neighborhood has complained many times and he didn’t care. He was taken to court, lost, and was fined. And he was taken back to court again this year. He has been offered a spot by the City, near the Fire Hall, to cook his chicken. Being allowed to use city owned property for free is not a bad deal, but he still violates the zoning law. If he didn’t like the zoning, he should have found a location in the city that allows it.

I'm making this very, very clear; I am in no way disparaging Clor's nor joining in the debate. I was merely trying to add humor to what is already a funny story about a rebel cow. I greatly overestimated the capacity for some people to get a joke or to refrain from taking any excuse, however slight, to once again stir a settled pot.

I got the joke, but I think you scared poor Hannah off ... she immediately canceled her account after you posted your second comment ... which for people who came later to the conversation sort of put the "slowly" out of context.

I agree about lightening up a bit. It was a great joke, and yes, it is good chicken! In these times, we need to laugh a bit and make light of some things!

Maybe "Charlotte" was in the barn and told him he was going to the butcher block if he won. I know that would spook me! (referring to the story Charlotte's Web).

There may have been a failed mass escape. While I kept vigil at the Gen Democratic Committee table at the Fair, the woman at the Mercy Flight table was telling a story about how ANOTHER steer broke loose inside the Fair before being captured. I'm having my doubts whether the initial steer surgery took with these two.
