Today's Poll: Which big retailer would you most like to see come to Batavia?

By Howard B. Owens
Which big retailer would you most like to see come to Batavia?

NOTE: This isn't about tax incentives or not, nor meant to address "shop local" or not. Whenever news comes up about new stores opening or coming to town, it always generates talk from people about "I wish this or that store would come to Batavia," so I thought the topic would make a fun and interesting poll. That is all.

No real surprise here. A Wegman’s has been on everyone’s most wanted list for years. The other choices are the kind you would go to every now and then. Wegman’s is the type you would go to once a week or more.

About a year ago, I contacted Wegmans to see if they had any plans on expanding to Batavia and was told at that time that they did not have any plans at that time. I wish that Wegmans could see the results of this poll and know that there is interest from the people in Genesee County.

Grew up in Rochester, honestly Wegmans is overrated! Yes they carry a lot of "ready made" items but cost wise they are expensive as heck! I very much enjoy my Tops and Walmart, can find everything I need and don't go broke doing it! I would visit a Big Lot way more often then I would Wegmans!

I shop at Wegmans once a week and always bring home the best quality items at outstanding prices. It is the only store I have ever shopped at where the store brand items are 9 times out of 10 better quality than the expensive name brands. Boneless/skinless chicken breast for $1.99 a pound, vegetables 49 cents a can, 1# of frozen vegetables for 99 cents, ground beef that smells like steak when it cooks $2.19/# - I could go on and on (those are the regular prices, not special sale items). I haven't shopped at Tops in months and in our house the saying is, "Tops never starts, saving you more!"

Wegmans new price stucture is better than any other stores by far. Tops is not only a rip off price wise but there stores are just bad, poor layouts, dirty at times. Wegmans is worth the drive everytime.

I also contacted Wegman's a couple years ago asking about the chance of them coming to Batavia. They wrote back that they only put up 1-2 new stores per year and their concentration is on building out-of-state stores.

Some people have recently told me about a retailer called Ikea. I have never been, but the way it was described, it sounded like it would meet the definition of a tourist destination.

How many grocery stores do you guys want in this small community?! We already have Tops, WalMart, KMart(limited), Aldi's, Target, Save a Lot, etc.. you get the point. I'll settle for a TJMaxx or Marshalls! :)

I've been in Wegmans a few times-I don't see what the big deal is-just a fancier version of Tops. Tops is way overpriced.Very rarely shop there.Chicken breast is same price @ WalMart in big pack -$1.99/lb. Aldi's, WalMart, and the bread store in Valu Plaza suit my grocery needs-haven't been to Sav-A-Lot in Batavia-one in Leroy is ok. Ikea would NEVER come to Batavia- not a big enough population base(what they told Irondequoit when they approached Ikea).Dick's would be probably best choice-but I can't see Batavia being able to support that, either.Cor can't even fill the Target/Lowe's Plaza-why give them even more tax breaks? I'd like to see a Golden Corral, but that probably will never happen either.

Tim what the hell is that supposed to mean? If Wegman's thinks its a good move to open a store in Batavia, they will, if not, obviously they won't. I don't think they make decisions based on whether people like Big Lots or not.

You won't have to wait much longer to enjoy a meal at "Golden Corral" in this area. There's one under construction on Jefferson Road across from Southtown Plaza. Really looking forward to it opening. Now, if only Chick-fil-A would build in WNY too.

The appeal of Wegmans is twofold. First, it is the only locally headquartered company on the list. Second, as a company, it consistently ranks among the top corporations to work for nationally. They would provide stable jobs with a decent working environment, relatively low turnover, and the lowest likelihood of suddenly pulling up and moving out. I would prefer Wegmans miles above the other choices.

Let get a petition together and have Hancock declare Angotti's a tourist destination, then we can have a beerfest weekend w campfires tenting and trading stories. Have Alex's place do the BBQ etc.....

Wegmans. They have the BEST subs and take out. The Tops "carry out cafe" is a joke compared to the sushi and subs that wegmans makes. Wegmans FTW!
