Unemployment rate improves for Genesee County, but county still has fewer jobs

By Howard B. Owens

Even with the opening of Alpina and the ramp up of Muller Quaker in the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park, Genesee County lost 300 jobs year-over-year for April, according to data released by the NYS Department of Labor.

Even so, the unemployment rate for the county dropped to 7.1 percent, the lowest April since 2008, when the county's unemployment rate was 5.4 percent.

The April 2012 rate was 7.6 percent.

The total number of non-farm jobs in the county hit 21,900 for April 2013, compared to 22,200 in April 2012.

The data does show an increase in jobs from March 2013 when the job count was 21,700.

The unemployment rate in March 2013 was 8.0 percent.

The state's unemployment rate is 7.3 percent, which is an improvement over the previous month and as well as a year ago.

The national unemployment rate is 7.1 percent.

In Orleans County, the unemployment rate is 9.3 and it's 7.8 percent in Livingston and 8.3 percent in Wyoming.

I can't understand this.
Howard...are you sure this information is accurate?

Everything and I mean EVERYTHING that we hear from GCEDC is about how many jobs they're bringing to Genesee County....and now we get this information?!

Well....it is from New York State so just by virtue of that the quality of the information is probably suspect.

Surely the GCEDC wouldn't be misrepresenting the effect they're having on the local economy....right?

Maybe the GCEDC kool-aid drinkers on the county legislature should have some questions for Mr. Hyde and Mr. Cook and all the others on that board.

Fewer jobs in Genesee County but lower unemployment? Sounds like more folks are commuting into Buffalo and Rochester.

I'm sure the new Dick's will result in more of those commuters working in Genesee County again.

Just remember, there are folks who are no longer collecting unemployment payments yet are still unemployed and looking for work. Are they excluded from the statistics?

No. At least not normally. So long as you are still looking for work you are counted as unemployed. However, if you just plain give up trying to find a job you are no longer counted as unemployed.

You are correct Bob...People who no longer are collecting unemployment after they have exhaust all there weeks are no longer counted.People employed is a more accurate number of the Genesee County unemployment rate .So one would have to say the counties unemployment rate has risen..One problem is Alpinia hiring people outside of Genesee county..

If a person accepts a part-time, low pay job even though they are still searching for a full time job, I suppose they are technically employed. So if 2 people accept part time jobs that equals 1 FTE job. Therefore, less unemployment, & less FTE jobs. See Jim Rosenbeck's post from 2 days ago for more on this wonderful phenomenon.
