How about keeping the thieves locked up? Locks only keep honest people out. A good padlock is only as good as the hasp it's connected to. When my house in Rochester was routinely broken into, no matter how well the door was constructed, the thieves had no problems getting into the house and nobody heard a thing.

It's wonderful to keep things locked up, but everyone needs to be vigilant about watching out for their neighbors and be willing to step up when the time comes. I know that my neighbors in Rochester just ignored what was going on because they didn't want to get involved. What goes around, comes around.

Good points Doug. I have found, what I think works as well as locks, is lighting. I have a 24x40 foot building in back, with 250 watt High Pressure Sodium lights on the front AND the back. My bedroom is on the back of the house, I have to pull the blinds and the curtains at night, but I think it's worth it. I feel that a thief is going to look for an easy target (darkness) and would shy away from one that is well lit. It's worked for nearly twenty years (KNOCK WOOD).

The neighbors haven't complained...it pretty much lights up their backyards also.
