A two-car, minor-injury accident is reported at 14 N. Main St. in the Village of Elba. It is not blocking traffic. One person has an arm injury.
UPDATE 5:14 p.m.: Elba is back in service. Law enforcement is on scene to manage traffic flow. Tow trucks are called in.
The following students were recognized for outstanding academic achievement at Buffalo State's 55th annual Honors Convocation:
To qualify, students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have accumulated a minimum of 45 credit hours. Buffalo State's Honors Convocation is held each spring to celebrate students who have achieved this level of academic excellence.
Founded in 1871, Buffalo State offers 166 undergraduate programs with 11 honors options and 65 graduate programs, including 19 postbaccalaureate teacher certification programs.
Ten local students representing Genesee Valley Educational Partnership were honored at the New York State Health Occupations Students of America Leadership Conference held last month in East Syracuse.
These exceptional students earned six medals, three achievement awards, two service project awards, one Barbara James Gold Community Service Award, one Presidential Gold Community Service Award, one “Outstanding New York State HOSA Officer Award" and one HOSA Chapter Poster Award.
Ten members of the HOSA chapters from the Batavia campus participated in competitive events and leadership activities.

Brianna is required to attend the National HOSA Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla., where she will be honored for all three of these awards. (Brianna participated in the National HOSA Leadership Academy in Washington, D.C., September 2011.)
Kelly Cook was elected to serve as a New York State HOSA State Officer for the 2012-2013 School year. Kelly will serve in the role of NYS secretary and Region E vice-president. Kelly is required to attend Officer Training Camp June 25-28 in Albany.

Susan Mills (NY State HOSA chaperone, and Attendance Officer for GVEP), Jenna Pangrazio, Kelly Cook and Jessica Fuller earned the NY State HOSA Achievement Award.
All students who have received a first-, second- or third-place honor, per the HOSA National Charter, have earned the right to attend the National HOSA Leadership Conference in Orlando.
Karen Emerson attended the event as a chaperone. Richard Queal provided transportation for the group. Don Shucknect was the male chaperone, Mary Beswick was a bus chaperone, and Sue Mills was the extraordinary overnight chaperone and HOSA supporter. Bonny Shelby is the HOSA advisor and Health Dimensions instructor for the students named above. Shelby is also a registered nurse at the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership -- Batavia campus.

A two-car accident is reported at Norton Road and Route 262. One person is complaining of a facial injury. It is partially blocking the roadway. Elba Fire Department and Mercy medics are responding.
UPDATE 2:23: A second ambulance is requested to the scene.
UPDATE 2:41 p.m.: A Mercy rig is transporting two patients to UMMC after their vehicle "broadsided" another vehicle, causing "moderate front-end damage" to the vehicle occupied by the patients. The driver is a 70-year-old man who has lacerations on his upper and lower lips and seat-belt marks and bruising. The passenger is a 30-year-old woman with bruising from her seat belt. CORRECTION: A family member informs us the patients were 17 and 13.
UPDATE 2:48 p.m.: The driver of the other vehicle is also being taken to UMMC by Mercy. The 33-year-old man is complaining of shoulder pain.
UPDATE 2:53 p.m.: Elba is back in service.
The Elba Elementary Central School will operate under the supervision of an interim principal for the remainder of the school year, according to District Superintendent Jerry Piwko.
Last month, the school board was unable to reach a consensus on who to hire permanently for the position and two weeks ago, Tom Cox, a retired administrator from Lyndonville, was placed into the job temporarily.
A new recruitment and interview process won't start until the school year closes, Piwko said, adding that he hopes a new principal can be hired by August, if not sooner.
"The sooner the better, and we'll go from there," Piwko said.
The position has been vacant since early December, when former principal Jason Smith resigned to accept a superintendent's job in Lyndonville.
"Jason is a great person and a great administrator and he was offered a great opportunity," Piwko said.
The process used to try and find a replacement for Smith involved a faculty search committee, a second interview community, parental involvement and the final two candidates interviewed with Piwko.
However, at their April meeting, the board was unable to come to an agreement on hiring a candidate.
Piwko said the process will be reviewed and he anticipates using a similar process this summer.
Christopher Green, of Elba, is among the members of New York Army National Guard who have been promoted in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership.
The announcement was made by Major General Patrick A. Murphy, the Adjutant General for the State of New York.
Green is serving with the Company E, 3-126th Aviation and is promoted to the rank of Private First Class.
Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability, and development potential.
These promotions additionally recognize the best qualified soldiers and attract and retain the highest caliber citizen soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard.

The broken water main in Elba has been repaired and water service restored.
Route 98 will remain closed for a couple of more hours while crews patch the roadway.
A water main has broken in the Village of Elba and crews expect repairs, which will start at 11 a.m., to take all day.
The break in the 20-year-old line appears to have occurred in the area of 25 North Main St.
Water to a portion of the village will be shut off at 11 a.m.
Traffic on Route 98 will be rerouted during the daylong repairs.
Carrile L. Mahon, 37, of Townline Road, Bergen, is charged with felony DWI, failure to keep right, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and refusal to take breath test. Mahon's vehicle reportedly left the roadway and went into a field on Route 98 in Elba at 9:48 p.m., Monday. The accident was investigated by Deputy James Diehl and Sgt. Greg Walker.
Kimberly E. Stack, 34, of 3 Morton Ave., Batavia, is charged with DWI and driving with a BAC of .08 or greater. Stack was stopped on Ellicott Street at 10:32 p.m., Monday, by Officer Chris Camp after police received a report of an erratic driver.
Amanda Marie Putnam, 25, of Selden Road, Le Roy, is charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Putnam is accused of using her landlord's vehicle without permission and then being involved in a motor vehicle accident while driving the vehicle.
Jonathan Paul Bouter, 28, of Oak Orchard Road, Elba, is charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, 3rd. Bouter was arrested on a warrant for the charge out of Corfu Village Court. He was jailed on $500 cash or $5,000 bond.
Elmira College has released its Deans' List for academic acievement for the Fall 2011 term. The list recognizes students that have a grade-point average of 3.6 or highter.

Cheering, chanting, hugs and tears of joy were all part of a big celebration in Elba last night as the Lady Lancers brought home their Class D State Champions trophy.
"It’s amazing," said Meg Stucko. "It’s like the best day of my life. I never thought the whole community would come together like this. It’s really awesome."
The whole community could celebrate together because the community won together.
Head Coach Tom Nowak praised dozens of volunteers, from scorekeepers to parents who traveled the state to videotape potential opponents in tournament games, along with all the fans who turned out to support the girls.
“They say it takes a whole community to raise a child,” Nowak said. “It takes a whole community to raise a state champion.”
The celebration in the gym followed a lights and sirens escort by the Elba Volunteer Fire Department through the village.
MacKenzie Bezon, who was Most Valuable Player of the title game, was amazed by the public's response.
"I can’t believe our community did this," Bezon said. "It’s not like just we won the championship. It’s the whole town. I just can’t believe it happened. We’ve been working so hard. I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was a dream."
Nowak said he was exceptionally proud that the Lady Lancers, who knew what to do, executed the game plan and their plays, and stayed in control.
"This is the most composed group of young ladies I've ever been associated with," Nowak said. "I was able to relax because I knew what they could do on the court."
After explaining the story because somebody told him recently "Coach, nobody is perfect," Nowak ended his remarks to thunderous applause when he said, "Right now and forever, these girls are a perfect 25-0."

The Elba Lady Lancers finish out 2012 with a perfect 25-0 season and a state championship after a win at Hudson Valley Community College today.
Elba beat Argyle High School 48--34 to take the team's first-ever state title.
Yesterday, Elba beat #1 seed South Kortright in the Class D semi-final to move on to today's final game.
McKenzie Bezon was named MVP and Meg Stucko was named to the All-Star Team. Kelsey Bezon won the Sportsmanship Award.
The 15th annual showcase featuring antiques, collectibles, artworks for sale and appraisals will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, at the Elba department rec hall. For the first time ever -- admission is FREE!
The fire hall is located on Route 98 in Elba.
There will be basket raffle and 50/50 drawings. Dave Cutitta, a Batavia dealer in coins and precious metals for 40 years, will be buying, selling and appraising silver and gold coins and scrap.

Mason Dumbleton, 20, of Pavilion, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, unsafe speed, unsafe lane change and unlawful possession of marijuana. Dumbleton was reportedly involved in a motor-vehicle accident on Route 20A in the Town of Perry at 10:30 p.m., Saturday. Dumbleton's vehicle reportedly left the south side of the road, struck a driveway culvert and a utility pole causing it to go airborne. The car landed on its roof. Dumbleton reportedly suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Daniel Norman Brown, 39, of Lake Street, Le Roy, is charged with criminal contempt, 2nd. Brown is accused of placing a phone call to a person he is barred from contacting. Brown was also arrested the day before, on Sunday, and charged with harassment, 2nd. Brown was accused of grabbing a woman and pushing her down.
Enoch Ronald Cole, 61, of Lake Street Road, Le Roy, is charged with harassment, 2nd. Cole allegedly punched another person in the back.
Kevin James Hodge, 28, of Valley View Drive, Batavia, is charged with petit larceny. Hodge is accused of stealing $66.21 in merchandise from Kmart.
Kathryn Ann Tordy, 45, of Sheriden Drive, Williamsville, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, improper left turn and failure to keep right. Tordy was stopped at 12:34 a.m. Saturday on Remsen Road, Pembroke, by Deputy Kevin McCarthy.
Daniel Jay Balduf, 20, of Angling Road, Pembroke, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater and insufficient tail lamps. Balduf was stopped at 3:35 a.m. Saturday on Angling Road by Deputy Kevin McCarthy.
Danielle Marie Stevens, 35, of Ford Road, Elba, is charged with criminal trespass, 2nd. Stevens allegedly entered and remained unlawfully in a hotel room.
Jill Ann Fulater, 59, of Shepard Road, Batavia, is charged with DWI, driving left of pavement markings and improper right turn. Fulater as stopped by Deputy Kevin McCarthy at 4:20 a.m. Sunday on Route 63, Batavia, following a complaint of an erratic driver.
Timothy Ryan McJury, 24, of Madison Street, Batavia, was arrested on a bench warrant for petit larceny. McJury was arraigned in Town of Batavia Court. McJury was arrested on a city court warrant for parking violations. McJury was jailed on $1,000 bail.
A 17-year-old resident of Warboys Road, Byron, is charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, speeding (75 mph in a 55 mph zone) and driving on a junior license (state Class DJ) after 9 p.m. and driving on a DJ license with two or more passengers under age 21. The youth was stopped at 1:13 a.m. Sunday on Buffalo Road, Bergen, by Deputy Timothy Weis.
The plan against Clymer, Elba Head Coach Tom Nowak said, was to play a fast-paced game and wear down the Clymer girls.
"We felt with them not having a lot of depth -- they didn't use a lot of depth during the season -- that we thought we would just try to up-tempo the game a little bit," Nowak said. "We thought that might create some turnovers and down the stretch maybe not be as effective on offense."
The strategy paid off and Clymer was just 3-14 from the floor in the final quarter, allowing the Lady Lancers to pull away with a 53-37 victory and a slot in the state Class D championship final four.
Clymer features some height and athleticism down front, and center Meg Stucko said the Lancers prepared well for what they were going to face.
"We practiced a lot all week for their forwards," Stucko said. "We kind of knew what they were going to do and what we were going to do, so we were ready for it."
Forced turnovers kind of told the story of the game, with Elba's defense taking the ball away a number of times, especially on transitions.
Nowak said, "that's kind of our bread and butter."
Elba is now 23-0 on the season and will face South Kortright (22-0), the state's top-ranked Class D team at 9 a.m. March 17 at Hudson Valley Community College.
"We’re all really excited because we all really want to go to state so bad," Stucko said. "That’s what we’re most excited about, just the chance to be in the state final four is really awesome."

The Elba Girls Basketball Team won the Western New York Regional Championship match against Clymer High School this afternoon at Finger Lakes Community College with a final score of 53 to 37.
The Lady Lancers now advance to the state semi-finals in a game next week in Albany.

For the third time in three meetings in 2012, Notre Dame beat Elba in boys basketball, but this time the game determined the Class D1 Section V champion.
It's the first sectional win for Notre Dame since 2001.
"They all laugh at me because I always say, 'you gotta dance with the girl you brought,' " said Coach Mike Rapone. "That's an old-timers saying, but we're not going to change anything. We're going to do what got us here."
After two previous meetings, both teams had to make adjustments, Rapone said.
"I give Elba a lot of credit," Rapone said. "They knew what we wanted to do and took a lot away from us."
Notre Dame (20-1) took a lead early, and though Elba (18-3) was often nipping at their lead, it wasn't until 3:42 left in the game that the Lancers held a 40-39 lead.
But after Doane McCulley hit a lay up and Zach Hotze sunk a three-pointer, Notre Dame didn't look back, holding on for a 50-45 point victory.
Zach Hotze and Tim McCulley had 16 points each for the Fighting Irish. Jared Thornton added 12 points.
"We're fortunate we hit our big shots when we had to," Rapone said.
One of the goals of the Irish, Rapone said, was to take the three-point play away from Dan Ramsey, whom Rapone said is one of the most consistent three-point shooters in the section.
Dan Ramsey was held to eight points for the game.
For the Lancers, Matt Ramsey had 14 points, Mike Ramsey nine. Mike Ramsey added nine rebounds.
The historic back-to-back championship match-ups between Elba and Notre Dame, with the Elba girls defeating the Notre Dame girls Friday night, was big for both schools.
"I don’t think it gets any better in small-school basketball than Notre Dame and Elba," Rapone said.
It's been a fun season at Notre Dame, according to Rapone, between the two basketball teams and the hockey team winning its Section V championship last week (the Irish skaters lost a regional playoff game Saturday night).
"We have a lot of school spirit and it’s been the most amazing winter ever," Rapone said. "I mean, the girls play for a championship, the boys make that miraculous run in hockey, everybody’s on cloud nine."
The Irish will face DeSales in a regional playoff game on Tuesday night.
