City sends letter to residents about private trash pick-up

posted by Howard B. Owens in batavia, garbage collection.

Letter from the city to residents:

As of June 1, 2013, City of Batavia residents will be responsible for their own curbside pickup of refuse, recycling and bulk items. Each property owner will either select a vendor of their choice or have to transport their refuse and recycling to a transfer station.

The City has contacted several refuse haulers in the area who are interested in collecting refuse, recycling and bulk items on a private basis. The City has not negotiated a price for this service and is not recommending a particular hauler.

Gardner Disposal: (585) 343-4626
Genesee ARC: (585) 343-1123 or 585-343-4203
PSI Disposal, Inc.: (585) 599-3255
Waste Management, Inc.: (800) 333-6590

Transfer stations to drop off refuse, recycling and bulk items:

Scofield Transfer and Recycling: (585) 343-7373
Town of Batavia Transfer Station: (585) 343-1729

**The number listed for Gardner Disposal is no longer in service** ...wonderful

Would it have been too much to ask that council found out some information about these companies totes vs bags, and disposal of large items policies, and maybe a rough cost? Geesh, they shove something down our throats and people rebelled at that. So they pouted and then up and quit without looking into options. And now they say "here are some phone numbers". As I've said before, I can't WAIT to get out of this stupid city of Batavia.

The city is trying to stay neutral on vendors, so from the conversation I overheard, they were trying to avoid anything that gave the appearance of preference for one company over the other in this letter.

I don't see how passing along information so every household in Batavia doesn't have to be innundating every single vendor to find this out themselves, relates to being neutral. It's the least they could do after this fiasco. I continue to feel sorry for and worry about our elderly population.

Odd thing is that Gardner is a new company, only a little over a month old and supposed to be located on River Street.Maybe they folded already.

When will we find out how much our property taxes are being lowered?

I called ARC and was told to leave my name and number and they will mail me a quote in a couple of weeks..I didn't leave my name at this time..Sounds like ARC doesn't have any idea of what to charge..So much for being ready to compete for our business

Now that there is competition, I wonder if they're going to wait to give us a cost until they hear what all of the other places are going to charge. All I can say is that the ARC better be wise when doing this. There are plenty of people who want to use bags over totes, and if another company allows bags and is cheaper, I may wind up changing my mind based on big item pick-up rules . I never liked having to pay $5 for this and $10 for disposing that. These larger companies may have large item pick-up all inclusive, then the ARC will be SOL. Yes, they've done a wonderful job over the past 28 years or so, but come on! This has been in the making for quite a long time, they should have prices already! What a wonderful situation we've been left in.

Why do I get the feeling.....some people could get their trash hauled away for nothing....and they would still bitch !! Geeeez people, you wanted less government, you got it. Now you want the city to gather all the information on these companies? Get on the phone....no answer....get in your car, find the office. Get out there and talk to people. GET REAL !!!!!!

All I know is the retired elderly will be paying two to three times what the original proposal stated. Thanks hard chargers. We lost the economy of scale.

It's kind of late for this disenfranchised complaining. All should have gotten more involved before it became a done deal...

So tell me, oh wise one, how many meetings did I attend? How many letters did I write? How many phone calls did I make?

Right, you have no idea how involved I was. Gosh it's frustrating to post here anymore with so many know-it-alls chiming in with their uninformed, negative remarks

Apparently for being so involved you missed some real key points before the CC was allowed to approve what they determined was the wishes of the people...

I called a few disposal service providers mid-February and got quotes for curb side pickup. WM will charge about $400/year plus a $35 setup fee for 2 totes, 1 trash and 1 recycle. PSI will charge about $310/year for 6 bags max per week and you provide your own recycle bins. Both require call ahead for large and/or special pickup and both eluded that they were introductory prices. I know someone who is a current customer with WM is paying about $500/year for the service I was quoted above. I left a voice message at ARC and they still haven't returned my call.

I have a question to throw into the ring... Those that have already paid taxes this year and paid for the old trash system is the city giving you a pro rated refund or credit? If not then why would arc service end when it does since they already collected the fees through the property tax. Just a thought.

Kyle,
The taxes collected that go to ARC end today, the end of the budget year. Taxes will be paid for an extra 60 days in this years budget, that starts tomorrow, to pay ARC for an extension. ARC is not sitting on any left over tax money.

I recall reading $9.30 per $1000 assessed value. So to make my math easy, if your home is assessed $100,000, then the city was charging you $930. So in theory, your tax bill should be reduced by that amount. Emphasis on "in theory".

Those prices are a far cry from the $100 a year for a medium size tote for retired home owners that Allied Services quoted. The hard chargers who pushed the issue cut off their noses in spite of their faces. We lost the economy of scale....it is every man for them self.

The cost to the city for providing trash service via ARC through May 31 will be collected from property taxes over the next 12 months.

Instead of taxes going down the amount of no ARC at all, they went down the amount of no ARC for the final 10 months of the tax year.

The cost for ARC for the extra 60 days is around $200,000

200,000 for 2 months would equal 1.2 million for the year...I thought they were only 800,000 dollars a year,,..It should only be about 130,000..Where is the other 70,000 dollars
