Woman who reportedly jumped in front of a car on East Main takes her own life

posted by Howard B. Owens in batavia, Le Roy.

The 49-year-old woman who, according to witnesses, purposefully stepped in front of a moving car on East Main Street on Thursday night has taken her own life.

According to a source in law enforcement, the woman used a gun this morning not long after being released from Strong Memorial Hospital, where she was taken for treatment by Mercy Flight after being hit by the car.

This person was obviously a danger to themselves based on statements from witnesses. She should have not been released until she was seen by mental health specialist.

I can't believe this woman was released from Strong. Eyewitnesses claim she purposely was struck by a moving vehicle after running out into traffic. I would think she should have been held under mental health laws.Such a preventable death, my thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

I can't believe that this woman would want to try to hurt herself. Who in their right mind would want to get hit by a car? Something is definitely wrong with her.

She probably didn't have insurance. Strong didn't want her to stay on their dime, so they took a short cut and let her loose. Sadly, a sign of the times....

Irene, at this point in time no one really knows what issues were at play, a mental health consult may have shed light on whatever her problems were. Alcohol and drugs may have been a factor as well. We don't know if she "really wanted" to kill herself, or if she just had a meltdown. You make it sound as if there is no way to help someone who is suicidal. I just don't buy into that theory.

Random thoughts Re: this news story: Is there anytime-soon we can bury the default butt-of-joke. Obsession with what's-her-face is approaching the tedium of Brad/Jennifer/Angelina pictures in every shopping checkout for the last decade. I see no benefit aside from improving the sales of a mediocre Mexican beer. I'm tempted to back-track to see which posters invoke her most often. ...A lurid obsession revealed? "I hope she finds peace." One suspects she did. "Something is definitely wrong with her." ...Past tense? "If somebody really wants to kill (sic) themself, nothing will stop them." Gotta love absolutes- for no other reason but inviting exception. "We don't know if she "really wanted" to kill herself..." Two jaunts into traffic may not have been fully committed or (what's the buzzword?) 'a call for help.' The gun was decisive. If someone decided to use my front bumper as a weapon for cashing in, I'd be PO'd. Imposing one's exit on an innocent bystander is pretty thoughtless. ...The fellow (years back) who shot himself while driving his truck. Did he think it might look like an accident? ...No consideration, either instance posed threat to others. "Sadly, a sign of the times...." Genesee County (and WNY) has a fairly stable suicide rate: 6 - 8, annually, since 1999. The trending in suicide rates involves teenagers, seniors and gays. She doesn't seem to fit those categories. I did not get the impression anyone appealed for sorrow directed at this woman. One presumes that fellow humans will react with humanity.

its hard to feel bad for someone that puts others lives at risk to take her own. i might have frowned for her if she just went straight to the gun instead of trying to make a stranger kill her.

C.M. "Sadly,a sign of the times" I wasn't refering to the suicide rate, I was talking about our health care system. Hospitals have become big business, and each individual becomes a profit or a loss.

Have you tried mental health yourself? Who are you to judge her for her mental stability and what degree do you carry? Ignorance is a sign of the times. You might have frowned at her? She was troubled granted. But you have no right to judge someone unless you've walked in their shoes. There are people all over who suffer from a variety of mental disorders. Are you immune to all? Or do you have a phobia of people who are depressed, suffer from PTSD, bipolar or any of the countless mental problems people face today? By the way... Are you an American? Our soldiers are coming back with some of the mental problems and some who have all ready served this great country STILL have problems!!! Are you frowning on them also??? For the woman and her family. May you all have the empathy and compassion in knowing... There are people in this town and country who care. God bless you as you go through this tragic time!
