Robert L. Williams, 21, of 112 State St., Batavia, is charged with assault, 3rd, and disorderly conduct. Williams was arrested on a warrant. He is accused of punching another person onOct. 22, which resulted in the alleged victim suffering a fractured nose. Williams was jailed on $1,000 bail.

Tanyka N. Blanding, 33, of 7 Madera Drive, Rochester, is charged with DWI and criminal possession of a weapon, 4th. Blanding was arrested by Le Roy Police in the early morning on Sunday. Blanding was stopped after the car she was driving allegedly almost collided with a police car on Lake Street. At the time of her stop, she was allegedly found in possession of brass knuckles. Blanding was jailed on $2,000 bail.

Dustin J. Good, 24, of 2937 Merle Road, Attica, is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, aggravated unlicensed operation, 3rd, and possession of a hypodermic instrument. Good was stopped at 11:12 p.m., Friday, on North Lyon Street, Batavia, by Officer Matthew Fleming.

Kenneth M. Gray Jr., 24, of 77 Myrtle St., is charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident, failure to keep right, operating in violation of restriction and inadequate tires. Gray is accused of hitting a street sign and a parked car on Hutchins Street near Ellicott Street. Gray was stopped some time later on South Main Street by Officer Darryle Streeter. Gray was arrested without incident. The investigation was handled by Officer Jason Ivison.

Jeffrey Matthew Kaczmarek, 42, of Alleghany Road, Alexander, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, felony aggravated unlicensed operation, 1st, driving left of pavement markings in no-passing zone and violation of conditional license. Kaczmarek was stopped at 11:23 p.m., Saturday, on Attica Road by Deputy Jason Saile.

Steven Michael John Kaczmarek, 25, of Gilhooly Road, Alexander, is charged with DWI and driving with a BAC of .08 or greater. Kaczmarek was arrested at 4:03 a.m., Friday, after deputies were called to an address on Gilhooly Road to investigate the report of a domestic incident. 

William Thomas Foley, 19, of Main Road, Stafford, and Kristian Nicole Elderbroom, 19, of Marlton Circle, Liverpool, are both charged with unlawfully dealing with a child, 1st. Foley and Elderbroom are accused of hosting an underage drinking party Nov. 13 at a location on Main Road in Stafford.

Ryan D. Wilson, 19, of Alexander Road, Attica, and Jay W. Schafer, 19, of Broadway Road, Darien, are charged with harassment, 2nd. Wilson and Schafer are accused of punching another person while at College Village at 2:42 a.m., Sunday.

Jesse Lee Harner, 25, of Country Route 41, Friendship, is charged with violation of a child-support order. Harner was turned over to the Sheriff's Office after being arrested by Cuba Police officers on a warrant out of family court.

Jered Michael Brown, 23, of North Baxter Street, Sutton, W. Va., is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater and failure to keep right. Brown was stopped at 1:57 a.m., Friday, on Route 5 in Pembroke by Deputy Kevin McCarthy.

Mercedes Anne Marchese, 20, of Indian Falls Road, Corfu, is charged with false written statement. Marchese is accused of making a false written statement to the Sheriff's Office on Nov. 6.

Dajuandrick A. Gardner, 16, of Byron Holley Road, Byron, is charged with criminal obstruction of breathing and endangering the welfare of a child. Gardner is accused of choking a 15-year-old boy in the Town of Bergen at 7:40 a.m., Oct. 3.

A large quantity of carrots have spilled onto the roadway from a semi at routes 5 and 19. Le Roy Fire and Ambulance Service is responding.

We've asked each of the candidates in the city council and county legislature races to answer a couple of questions regarding why they're running and what they hope to accomplish if elected. Election Day is Tuesday.

Here is the response from Jackie Whiting, candidate for county legislature, District 5.

As the legislator from Le Roy, one of the issues I'd like to focus on is the I-90/490 interchange. This is one of only two Thruway exits in the state of New York that doesn't have any business development. This has been a point of concern for Le Royans since the Genesee Economic Development Corp. purchased the property years ago.

For all these years, promises have been made to my friends and neighbors in Le Roy about bringing business to that land, but nothing has been done. The main stumbling block to getting that property developed is the lack of essential utility services and I am ready and willing to work with anyone who can prepare that property for business development. I'd like to be a part of helping the GCEDC make this a successful project.

I would also like to serve on the legislature's Human Services Committee, which oversees the county departments that deal with our seniors. I have a long history of senior advocacy having served as program coordinator at both the Genesee County Office for the Aging and The Greens of Le Roy. The continued viability of the Genesee County Nursing Home, one of our most important safety nets and assets, is an issue that lies close to my heart. Our seniors have spent a lifetime paying the taxes that created and supported our nursing home and it is the responsibility of the legislature to do what they can to ensure its continued existence.

I would ask the residents of Le Roy to vote for me because I am a person who gets things done. They know I understand and care for the people of Le Roy and they know I am going to work extremely hard for them. I've spent my entire adult life working to make the great community of Le Roy even better. I serve on the school board, I was president of Le Roy Youth Football and Le Roy Knights, Inc. I am a member of the Le Roy Business Council so I understand the challenges small businesses face. I spend my days and nights promoting our kids, our businesses and our community.

I want to take that experience and dedication to the Genesee County Legislature where I can continue to advocate for our senior citizens, our youth and our business community. I feel I am prepared to do that and I am the only candidate who has been attending legislation subcommittee meetings for the past several months. I will bring knowledge and insight of current county issues right from the start, so I ask for the support of Le Roy residents with their vote on November 8th.

It was a weekend of wins and records for student athletes in Genesee County, with Le Roy Girls Volleyball and three cross-country runners picking up sectional titles.

In volleyball, Le Roy girls won their second straight Section V title with a 3-0 win over Williamson Central. Kaitlyn Tyler had 16 kills and Montana Vestovi added 24 assists for Le Roy (15-4). Le Roy will face Waterloo Tuesday in the Class C regional qualifier at Cal-Mum.

With a time of 16:02 Jeffrey Antolos of Notre Dame claimed a Class D cross-country title. Anna Warner took a girls Class DD title with a time of 19:47. Pavilion's  Liz Valento took a Class D title with a time of 19:02.

Notre Dame won the Class DD team championship with 71 points.

Other top finishers in their classes include: Pembroke’s Randi Rudnik (17:47) in ninth; Andrew Fischer, Notre Dame, fifth (17:12); Oakfield-Alabama's Connor George (17:16), sixth; and teammate Gabe Bender, seventh (17:18).

In swimming, Batavia's Catherine McAllister, Sarah DiBacco, Helen Zickl and Alayna Mlodozeniec set a Batavia school record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:47.30, which placed them in fifth in their sectional meet.

In other sectional action, Pavilion Girls Volleyball lost to Cal-Mum in a Class CC final match. BHS Girls Volleyball dropped a Class B final to Wayne Central, 4-1. Notre Dame's girls dropped a qualifer match to Harley-Allendale-Columbia, 3-2.

Le Roy Fire Department is responding to a two-car accident on East Main in which at least one person reportedly lost consciousness.

UPDATE 7:42 a.m.: An ALS (advanced life support) and BLS (basic life support) ambulance requested to the scene. Traffic control requested. Chief: "We're going to have to pop a door."

On Saturday, three local law enforcement agencies collected prescription drugs that were no longer needed in order to sure safe destruction of the drugs.

Here's the results of the drop off:

• Batavia PD: 169 vehicles, and a total of 487.5 lbs;
• Le Roy PD:  46 vehicles, and a total of 144.8 lbs;
• Sheriff's Office, in Pembroke: 36 vehicles, and a total of 53.5 lbs.

Aaron J. Wood, 20, of Iroquois Road, Caledonia, is charged with petit larceny. Wood is accused of unwrapping and eating a $3 pizza while in the Tops Market in Le Roy. Wood allegedly tried to leave the store without paying for the pizza.

Joseph Dennis Vendetta, 30, of Tracy Avenue, Batavia, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, tinted windows and driver's view obstructed. Vendetta was stopped at 2:21 a.m., Saturday, on Richmond Avenue by Deputy Patrick Reeves.

Billy Joe Budziszewski, 20, of Alleghany Road, Corfu, is charged with criminal possession of a weapon, 3rd, and criminal mischief, 4th. Budziszewski is accused of getting into a dispute with his father Friday morning. During the dispute, Budziszewski allegedly became verbally abusive and punched the kitchen wall and front door, causing some damage during the argument. Budziszewski also allegedly had a pair of metal knuckles in his bedroom dresser.

Luis Geraldo Pacheco, 49, of Webster Avenue, Rochester, is charged with three counts of criminal contempt, 2nd. Pacheco is accused of violating a stay away order on three separate occasions.

Melvin Gaylord Draper, 30, of Webber Avenue, Oakfield, is charged with felony DWI, aggravated DWI (BAC of .18 or greater), aggravated unlicensed operation, 1st, and improper signal. Draper was stopped at 12:47 a.m., Saturday, on Bank Street Road, Batavia, by Sgt. Brian Frieday.

Gene Robert Schmidt, 44, of Dodgeson Road, Alexander, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 and failure to keep right. Schmidt was stopped at 1:33 a.m., Saturday, on Bowen Road, Alexander, by Deputy Jason Saile.

Trent H. Burgess, 39, of West Avenue Brockport, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 and speeding (89 mph in a 55 mph zone). Burgess was stopped at 12:26 a.m., Sunday, on Clinton Street Road, Stafford, by Deputy Howard Carlson.

Brian James Nelson, 24, of Grove Street, Painted Post, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, failure to keep right and driving left of pavement markings in a no-passing zone. Nelson was arrested following the investigation by Deputy Jason Saile into a one-car accident at 6:04 a.m., Sunday, on Route 77 in Darien. 

Daniel L. Cone, 51, of 6380 Clinton St. Road, Bergen, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, speed not reasonable and prudent, following too closely and moving unsafely from lane. Cone was stopped at 5:55 p.m., Saturday, on East Main Street, Batavia, by Officer Dan Coffey.

Lawrence D. Williams, 51, of 148 Hutchins St., Batavia, is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, 7th. Williams was allegedly found in possession of a small quantity of cocaine following a traffic stop.

Scott G. Tooley, 26, of 199 S. Main St., Batavia, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Tooley is accused of leaving a young child at home without adequate supervision.

An ATV rider is reportedly injured and on the ground at mile marker 376.1 on the westbound Thruway. The rider is conscious but injuries, if any, are not yet known. Le Roy Fire and Ambulance Service are responding. The caller told dispatch that there were two ATVs traveling and they somehow collided. The other driver "took off" -- possibly to get help. Mercy medics are on scene.

UPDATE 4:44 p.m.: Mercy Flight is on an in-air standby.

UPDATE 4:46 p.m.: Mercy Flight is cancelled.

UPDATE 5:06 p.m.: Le Roy Ambulance left a few minutes ago, headed to Strong Memorial Hospital with one patient. All other units back in service.

Catherine R. Bater, 20, of 112 Lake St., Le Roy is charged with grand larceny and endangering the welfare of a child 1st. Bater was arrested by Le Roy Police on two separate cases. In the first case, Bater is accused of stealing a laptop computer, digital camera and multiple DVDs from a residence on Lathrop Avenue on or about Sept. 25. The camera and computer were recovered. In the second incident, Bater is accused of switching out a prescription of generic Ritalin belonging to a juvenile with high blood pressure medication (Clonidine). The switched medication was subsequently administered to the juvenile causing the youth to lose consciousness. Batar was arraigned and jailed on an unspecified amount of bail.

Eric Bratcher, 22, of 7 1/2 North St., Le Roy, was arrested on a bench warrant. Batcher is accused of violating the terms of his release under supervision contract. Bratcher was originally charged Oct. 16 with burglary, accused of breaking into a Gilbert Street residence and stealing a video game system and games. Bratcher was jailed on an unspecified amount of bail.

Uriah Ian Charles Smoke, 26, of Bloomingdale Road, Basom, is charged with reckless endangerment, 2nd, and criminal mischief. Smoke is accused of throwing a glass coffee mug at a minivan while his girlfriend and their child were in the van. The impact caused the glass of the sliding door window to shatter, spraying the infant with glass. The infant was not injured.

Andrew Joseph Lennox, 23, of Webber Avenue, Oakfield, is charged with trespass. Lennox is accused of being on College Village property after being banned from the property.

Local law enforcement agencies will again participate in the DEA Prescription Drug Drop Program on Saturday.

The program allows local residents to drop off any sort of prescription drug for proper, safe and legal disposal -- no questions asked.

When Pete Tucci heard his dogs barking around 8:15 a.m., he thought he better take a look out his back window.

"It was like the sun had landed in my back yard," Tucci said, describing the big balls of flame bursting from the rear of his neighbor's house at 7167 W. Main St. Road, Le Roy.

"I went out my back door and I could feel the heat, like an octopus all around me, and there were huge flames, just a big blasts of flames," Tucci said.

Tucci was concerned that his neighbor and friend, Chuck Lathan, whose truck was still in the driveway, was trapped inside.

Le Roy Police Officer Daryl Robb knocked down the front door, but heat and smoke beat him back and he wasn't able to get into the house.

"It was just too thick to get inside," Robb said, adding, "If you don't try, you'll always second guess yourself."

Fortunately, Lathan wasn't inside. He recently started working day shifts, so he was at work, as was his wife, something Genesee County emergency dispatchers confirmed early in the fire.

Le Roy Fire, aided by Bergen, Stafford, Pavilion and Caledonia responded quickly to the fire once reported. (Churchville filled in at Le Roy's hall.)

Tucci said Stafford firefighters started spraying down his house to protect it from the fire as soon as they arrived on scene.

"They did a great job saving my house," Tucci said.

The cause and origin of the fire is yet to be determined, but early indications, an investigator said, are it started around the wood-burning stove in the house. 

The house is a complete loss, and possibly all seven cats owned by the Lathans perished in the fire.

"Chuck and Ellie are such great neighbors," Tucci said. "They're really sweet people, and they lost everything."

A structure fire is reported at 7180 7167 W. Main St. Road just outside the Village of Le Roy. A Sheriff's deputy on scene said "It's going pretty good." All traffic is to be shut down. A neighbor tells an officer that a person may still be inside. Le Roy Fire Department is responding along with mutual aid from Pavilion, Stafford, Bergen and the Town of Batavia Fast Team.

UPDATE 8:41 a.m.: Caledonia is en route with five firefighters and they are directed to the scene.

UPDATE 8:45 a.m.: There is confirmation that no one is still inside the structure.

UPDATE 9:29 a.m.: The home, which is completely destroyed, is owned by Chuck Lathan. Seven cats perished inside. A wood stove is believed to have started the fire. A state trooper who was one of the first on scene said smoke was pouring from the chimney before the structure caught fire.

UPDATE 9:38 a.m.: The Le Roy fire chief reports the blaze is out and now crews are overhauling the scene.

A Le Roy resident has been arrested and charged with using marijuana and cash to pay for unspecified sexual acts.

Taken into custody is Thomas J. Hutton, 28, of 92 Lake St., #2, Le Roy.

Hutton is charged with criminal sale of marijuana, 5th, unlawful possession of marijuana and patronizing a prostitute.

Hutton was jailed on $1,000 bail.

The charges follow an investigation by Le Roy Police into an allegation that Hutton paid a third party cash and marijuana for the performance of sexual acts.

A search warrant was executed on Hutton's residence with the assistance of the Genesee County Sheriff's Office, which allegedly led to the discovery of marijuana at the residence.

This spring, I drove by this old quarry on Golf Road in Le Roy for the first time. It was filled with green water that day and I thought, "I bet in the fall, that green water topped by autumn-colored trees looks pretty awesome." So this afternoon, driving back from Rochester, I thought of the quarry and the picture possibility. It was a bit of a let down to find the water evaporated over the summer. But with the dramatic storm clouds above, I still thought it could make a nice picture.

David Michael Johns, 46, of East Street, Gainsville, is charged with grand larceny, 4th, falsifying business records, 1st, and petit larceny. While employed at Kistner Concrete Products, 10056 East Road, Bethany, Johns allegedly loaded merchandise valued at more than $1,100 into a customer's vehicle and failed to turn in funds to the business from the transaction. Johns is accused of falsifying a packing slip and turning it over to his supervisor in an attempt to account for reportedly missing merchandise. In a separate incident, Johns is accused of loading merchandise into a customer's vehicle with a value of $150 and failing to turn funds over to the business.

Joseph James Lloyd, 40, of 100th Street, Niagara Falls, NY, is charged with grand larceny, 3rd. Lloyd, operating as M. Franklin Home Improvement, Inc., is accused of accepting a payment of $15,000 from a Town of Pembroke resident in October 2010 to build a garage on her property, but Lloyd allegedly failed to use any of the money towards the project.

Matthew C. Higgins, 29, of 2823 Graney Road, Caledonia, is charged with felony DWI. Higgins was taken into custody by Le Roy Police after a concerned citizen initially reported an occupied vehicle parked in the driving lane of Perry Road just south of Route 20. When the citizen approached the vehicle, the driver took off north on Perry and continued into the village. A car reportedly driven by Higgins was stopped on East Main Street in the village after allegedly failing to keep right. Higgins was jailed on $5,000 bail.

Seokjoon Suh, 25, of Batavia Stafford Townline Road, Batavia, is charged with criminal possession of a weapon, 4th. Suh is accused of possessing a collapsible baton while at College Village.

Cody James Sundown, 21, of Skye Road, Tonawanda, was turned over to the Genesee County Sheriff's Office by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office on a bench warrant out of the Town of Pembroke for criminal mischief, 3rd. Bail was set at $750 or $5,000 bond.

Robert Lee Williams, 21, of State Street, Batavia, is charged with criminal contempt, 2nd. Williams is accused of violating an order of protection by going to the place of employment of the protected party. The order specifically barred Williams from going to that business location.

Effective Monday, Nov. 14, 2011 the hours for the school crossing guard located at the intersection of routes 5 and 19 will change. The crossing guard will be at that location from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. in the morning and 2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday when school is in session.  This change does not affect the crossing guards located at the Wolcott Street or North Street intersections.
