Poll: What has made Genesee County the most famous?

By Philip Anselmo

Yesterday, we got up the announcement of No. 4 in the Holland Land Office Museum's countdown of The Twenty-Five Things That Made Genesee County Famous. It was none other than the eponymous Holland Land Company.

So... that brings us to the top three, and the way we've got it worked out, there are still five likely contenders for those three slots. Surely, William Morgan and Jell-O will be among those three. But the third is something of a toss up. A couple of our readers suggested the state School for the Blind. Others have suggested Bill Kauffman. Quite a few more were sure that Barber Conable would make the top five. What do you think? What else has a chance at fame?

What else will make the top three famous countdown?

I'm not sure that Bill Kauffman will, he's known within academic and intellectual circles but isn't popular with the general public nation-wide.

morgans story
blind school

Does conable really have ties to the county?

Blind school cannot be left off the list entirely so I have to question conables ties

I don't know anything about Conable except for Wikipedia and whatever small things I've read that were essentially the same as wikipedias offerings .."warsaw"
Don't ask me why but I doubt I had ever heard of the man before thebatavian. Sad

Was he KNOWN for being from here, though? Just being from here doesn't make the county more recognizable, you know? The only ones that know just may be us
"us" being those he served

Proves how much I searched
You're right
Even practiced in Batavia early on

thebatavian should hit up his children for an interview

Still, don't know whether he made the area known.
I'd honor the guy with a top spot but I don't think he's knocking the infamous Morgan story out and the Blind School just cannot be left out of a top 25

We've had two more 'Other' votes for Batavia Downs. As we've pointed out, however, Batavia Downs already made the list.

More 'Other' votes: Richard Dunlap and the Mall.
