It’s the committee’s Third Year Anniversary! - Fran Wagner, President of the Scajaquada Creek Canoe Club will discuss the clubs dedication to improving the environmental health of Scajaquada Creek. The 30 to 40 member club are involved in conducting stream cleanup’s, water quality and wildlife monitoring, and creating access for canoes and kayaks, as well as paddling together on the waterways of Western New York. Several members just participated in the Adirondack Classic, a three-day canoe race.
- Sheila Hess, CEO of Conservation Connects and Executive Director of New York Green will discuss the importance and benefits of partnerships in watershed planning and natural resource conservation. Sheila will review techniques for building relationships and creating synergy with traditional and nontraditional conservation partners.
Great strides have been made in forming a multi-county alliance devoted to the Tonawanda Creek Watershed, which lies within parts of Wyoming, Genesee, Erie and Niagara Counties. On December 2, 2009 a meeting was held at the Corfu Community Center to discuss the feasibility of forming a multi-county Tonawanda Creek Watershed group. This initial meeting was well attended, including officials and interested citizens from: Genesee County: Soil & Water Conservation District, Planning Dept., Health Dept. and Legislature; Towns of Pembroke, Alexander, Bethany and Darien; Tonawanda Band of Seneca’s. Wyoming County: Soil and Water Conservation District, Planning & Development Dept., Emergency Management Dept., Towns of Sheldon and Bennington. Erie County: Soil and Water Conservation District, NRCS, Buffalo-Niagara Riverkeeper, Water Quality Committee, Dept. of Public Works, Environmental Planning/Storm water Coalition, UB Law Environmental Attorney, Towns of Clarence and Amherst. Niagara County: Town of Royalton. Regional: NYS Soil & Water Conservation Committee, Genesee/Finger Lakes Regional Planning Council, Lake Ontario Coastal Initiative, and US EPA Region 2.
“A lot of work is already going on separately. We need to connect and make a coordinated effort,” said Mark Gaston, District Manager of Erie County SWCD.
A large list of concerns and goals for the watershed were expressed, including water quality, erosion and sedimentation control, stream bank stabilization, flood control, habitat protection and recreational use.
By nearly unanimous consensus, it was decided to proceed with formation of a Tonawanda Creek Watershed Committee. “We must identify stakeholders and make sure they are involved. Communication is vital,” said Paul Fuhrmann of the Erie County Water Quality Committee, adding “The database of knowledge of this diverse group is invaluable”.

The issue of merging the South Byron and Byron fire departments was probably first raised in 1968, according Paul Boylan, the town's attorney.

She was born June 23, 1961 in Batavia, a daughter of Ronald and Mary Jane (Dillon) Heywood of East Bethany.
Kim was a graduate of Pavilion Central School, GCC, and she earned her bachelor's degree at Brockport State College. She was a bookkeeper for several local businesses, and an employee of Lenape.
She was a member and dedicated Deacon and Elder of the East Bethany Presbyterian Church, and also attended the Congregational Church of Riga. Kim was a loving, kind, thoughtful, giving person who always put others first; she will be sadly missed. We have lost a very bright light in our family, but she'll shine brightly in Heaven.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her fiance, Jerry Clark of Riga; daughter Danielle (Timothy) Dosch of Florida; son, Shawn McGiveron of Warsaw; grandchildren, McKenzie and Savannah; brothers, Doug (Peg) Heywood of East Bethany, and Richard (Melissa) Heywood of Tennessee; sisters, Bonnie (Ken) Morgan of Tennessee, and Linda (Randy) Page of Batavia. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews also survive.
Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street in Batavia. Kim's funeral service will be held on Monday (May 16) at 11 a.m. at the East Bethany Presbyterian Church, 5735 Ellicott Street Road in East Bethany. Burial will be in East Bethany Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to East Bethany Presbyterian Church. Two men were arrested today for allegedly trespassing at the Rolling Hills Asylum in the Town of Bethany, according to State Police, following an investigation of an incident that occurred on Sept. 15.

East Bethany ~ Lewis Allen Rhinehart, age 78, passed away Wednesday morning (July 13, 2022) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Lewis is survived by his daughter, Crystal; sister Ruth Parnell and special nephew, Scott Parnell. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews across the country. Lewis was predeceased by his wife, Beverly; his brothers, William, Ronald, John, Homer Jr., Walter and sister, Doris.
Lewis worked for many years as a carpenter for Harry Pimm, Jr., before moving on to work as a security guard for Sabin Metal until he retired in the early 2000’s.
Lewis spent his retirement with his wife, Beverly until her passing in 2011; while also cuddling with his beloved dog, Peanut and collecting John Deere tractor models.
Family and friends may call on Sunday, July 17 from 1 ~ 4 PM at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake St. Rd. (Rt. 19), LeRoy. Graveside prayers and military honors will be held on Monday, July 18 at 11:00 AM at the Pavilion Cemetery.
