Lunch in the Dark fundraiser set for April 20

Independent Living of the Genesee Region (ILGR) is inviting everyone to their Lunch in the Dark Fundraising event, on Thursday, April 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It will take place in the gymnasium of the New York State School for the Blind, 2A Richmond Ave., Batavia, NY.

Participants will experience lunch in a darkened environment in order to better understand eating and socializing with vision loss.  As a group, we will talk about the best practices for making events with food more accessible, as well as strategies for eating with vision loss.  With a donation requested of $50 per ticket, the event includes a 50/50 split drawing and a Basket Raffle.

The BOCES Culinary class will do the catering with a menu including Italian Pot Roast, Mashed Potatoes, Vegetable Medley (Carrots, Cauliflower, Broccoli), Risotto Cakes, and Panna Cotta.

Corporate sponsorships are available at three levels: Gold ($750); Silver ($500) and Bronze ($250), with increasing benefits and degrees of promotion for the business as one goes up the levels.  Individual donations of any amount are accepted as well.  Full details are available from Rae Frank, ILGR Director, at 585-815-8501, Ext. 406.  All proceeds will assist in providing services and programs which offer independence, empowerment, and equality for individuals with disabilities in Genesee, Wyoming, and Orleans Counties!

4th Annual Burpees for Boobs

The 4th Annual Burpees for Boobs event will be held at Batavia Cross Training, 34 Swan Street, Batavia, NY on Saturday, October 29, 2016 7AM-12PM. Partner workout times are 7:00, 8:30, & 10:00. A basket raffle will be available for participants and non-participants. Participants do not have to be Batavia Cross Training members so individuals or partners of any fitness level can sign up and enjoy the fun! Individuals without partners will get paired up at the event.

Dancers Fight Cancer

On Friday, October 21, 2016 5PM-8PM, the ladies from Shake It Off Zumba will be working to support Genesee Cancer Assistance as guest bartenders at Ri-Dan’s Sports Park, 3755 West Main St. Rd., Batavia, NY. Also on the evening agenda are a chicken BBQ, a 50/50 raffle, and basket raffles.

Baby Ella’s Blood Drive at BHS Auditorium

An American Red Cross blood drive for a baby girl named Ella battling pediatric cancer is scheduled in the auditorium at Batavia High School from 2 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment. BHS students wishing to donate blood see Mr. Byrnes to make an appointment. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s starts at Genesee County Nursing Home

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s fundraiser takes place this Saturday, rain or shine, starting at the Genesee County Nursing Home. It is is located at 278 Bank St. in Batavia. Staging area opens at 9 a.m. and the walk ceremony — known as the “mission moment” — begins at 10 a.m.

Inaugural Batavia Cross Training Scavenger Hunt

Batavia Cross Training will hold its Inaugural Scavenger Hunt at Batavia Cross Training, 34 Swan Street, Batavia, NY on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 6PM. Teams of 4 will venture out into the community with instructions and tasks to complete using any means of transportation except motorized vehicles to travel between challenge sites. Participants do not have to be Batavia Cross Training members so anyone can join a team and enjoy the fun!

‘Love for Lucas Garage Sale’ at St. Maximillian Kolbe Church, East Pembroke

The premiere of the “Love for Lucas Garage Sale” will take place from  9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 19-20, at St. Maximillian Kolbe RC Church. It is located at 8656 Church St. in East Pembroke. This is a fundraiser to help offset the financial burden that has beset the family of Lucas Clemm, due to all his medical conditions and surgeries. Lucas turned 1 on June 27 and had undergone his third major brain surgery by Aug. 5. The family is consulting with a doctor in NYC soon for a second opinion. The past eight months have been very difficult for his family.

Genesee Cancer Assistance Annual Bocce & Golf Against Cancer

Genesee Cancer Assistance will hold its Annual Bocce & Golf Against Cancer tournament at Batavia Country Club, 7909 Batavia Byron Road, Batavia, NY on Friday, August 19, 2016 (12PM shotgun start for golf, 1PM start for bocce). This year’s event honors Nick Grasso who is battling cancer. The day includes golf and bocce tournaments, lunch, dinner, prizes, awards, and loads of fun!

Hogs for Paws at Stans Harley Davidson, dog/cat microchipping available

Volunteers For Animals will be offering a microchip clinic during Hogs for Paws at Stan’s Harley Davidson from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13th. The motorcycle dealership is located at 4425 W. Saile Drive in the Town of Batavia. Cost of microchipping is $30 per animal, which includes the injection, a collar ID tag and national registration. Accepted payment is either cash or checks (made out to Volunteers For Animals), sorry no credit cards. No preregistration necessary. Each dog or cat must be accompanied by someone who can control it.

‘Battle of the Badges’ blood drive at Quality Inn & Suites, Batavia

The debut of a community blood drive dubbed “The Battle of the Badges” will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, at Quality Inn & Suites, 8250 Park Road, Batavia. It’s being presented by Tompkins Financial for the American Red Cross. The question looms: Who will be the 2016 First Responder Champion for the premiere of this contest? A Trooper? Sheriff’s Deputy? A city or village Police Officer? City firefighter? A volunteer for a town fire department? A Mercy EMS technician?

Big honkin’ garage sale at Rick’s Storage to benefit shelter animals

There will be a big honkin’ garage sale at Rick’s Storage to benefit the critters at the Genesee County Animal Shelter from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 16-18. All proceeds will go toward the homeless animals. Rick’s Storage is located at 3566 W. Main Street Road in the Town of Batavia.

Scrap Metal Drive

The East Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary is holding their first SCRAP METAL DRIVE. Drop off your scrap metal at the pavilion located behind the fire hall (accessible by Slusher Road). A volunteer will check in your donation. Pick-ups can be arranged. We accept scrap metal only, no electronics, plastics, TV’s etc. We will also be collecting cans and selling hot dogs. Come on out and support the auxiliary. All proceeds benefit the free programs and events held through out the year by the organization.

Williams family of Oakfield to host lemonade stand at Valle Jewelers in Batavia to help fight pediatric cancer

Oakfield resident and Childhood Cancer Hero, Brady Williams and his family, have been selected as Lemonade Days Hero Reps! Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation selected 36 families across the country as ambassadors for their national fundraiser in June. Each family symbolically represents the 36 children diagnosed with cancer daily in the United States. The Williams’ lemonade stand is from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
