Public hearing on tentative 2020 county budget at Old Courthouse

Notice is hereby given that the Genesee County Legislature will meet at the Genesee County Old Courthouse, 7 Main St., Batavia, on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m. for the purpose of holding a Public Hearing on the Tentative Genesee County Budget for 2020.

A copy of the Tentative Budget will be available in the Office of the Clerk of the Legislature, 7 Main St., Batavia, where it may be inspected by any interested person.

National Drug Take-Back event at Batavia and Le Roy police departments and Pembroke Town Hall

On Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Genesee County law enforcement agencies and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Open House and celebration for new music garden and wall mural outside GO ART!

The Grand Opening and Open House for the new Play Me A Tune Music Garden at GO ART! will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, at GO ART!, located at 201 Main St. in Downtown Batavia.

The music garden is located in back of the historic Seymour Place building.

There will be donuts and apple cider, food trucks and lots of family fun.

Also, celebrate the new wall mural designed by artist Jill Pettigrew and painted with help from the GC Senior Center and other community members.

Auditions for Batavia Players' musical 'A Charles Dickens Christmas'

The Batavia Players are entering the Holiday Season by presenting a truly wonderful Christmas story, "A Charles Dickens Christmas." This musical is a highly original take on "A Christmas Carol" that gives a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the holiday classic.

The theater company will be looking for actors and singers between the ages of 8 to senior. Rehearsals are slated to begin the first full week of November. Auditions will be 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1st and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2nd.

Long-term effects of radiation for breast cancer treatment topic of free talk by doctor at Richmond library, hosted by the Breast Cancer Coalition

The Breast Cancer Coalition will present a talk on the long-term effects of radiation beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Richmond Memorial Library in Batavia.

This event is cosponsored by Assemblyman Steve Hawley and Senator Michael Ranzenhofer.

It is free and open to the public. No reservations necessary. The library is located at 19 Ross St. in the City of Batavia.

Dr. Kevin J. Mudd, of the UR Medicine Wilmot Cancer Institute, will be the speaker.

Kiwanis Club and Batavia's Original host second annual Kids Halloween Parade -- line up at Dan's Tire, walk to pizzeria

Once again Batavia’s Original is teaming up with the Kiwanis Club of Batavia to host the Kids Halloween Parade on Sunday, Oct. 27th.

This is the second year that Kiwanis has partnered with Batavia’s Original on this fun, free family event.

The parade starts in front of Dan’s Tire & Auto, behind the Downtown mall, and ends at Batavia’s Original. The parade starts at 1 p.m., so kids should start lining up around 12:45.

The parade is rain or shine, so kids should dress appropriately.

Fall Festival hosted by City Church at St. Anthony's Community Center: games, bounce house, dinner and candy - free fun for the whole family

A family-friendly Fall Festival will be hosted by the nondemominational City Church from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Oct. 31 at the St. Anthony's Community Center.

It is located at 114 Liberty St. in the City of Batavia.

There will be games, a bounce house, dinner and candy. Every child will receive a bag of candy when they leave!

GLOW OUT hosts free educational program on 'Welcoming Schools' at GO ART!, please RSVP

GLOW OUT is hosting its second educational program on "Welcoming Schools" at GO ART!, located at 201 E. Main St. in Downtown Batavia.

It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The presenter for this program is Carole Ebersole-Weis, who is the WNY coordinator for the Human Rights Campaign, which is the largest LGBTQ advocacy group and political lobbying organization in the United States.

There will be a Q-and-A session with Ebersole-Weis following the program.

89.1 The Point is collecting new and gently used donations for charity at Batavia Walmart

The on-campus radio station 89.1 The Point at SUNY Brockport is undertaking its Fall charity drive and this year the beneficiary is the Willow Domestic Violence Center in Rochester, which serves Genesee, Orleans and Monroe counties.

Students will be collecting various items for donation this Friday and Saturday at the Walmart in Batavia (and Brockport).

Batavia Walmart donations can be dropped off from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19.

City Republican Committee hosts meeting at Richmond library with GOP ward council members

The City of Batavia Republican Committee is sponsoring a Meet with Your Republican Ward Councilpersons for our City residents.

The meeting will take place at the Richmond Memorial Library in the downstairs Wilbur Room from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24th.

All City residents are invited to attend. The purpose of the meeting is to listen to and discuss your concerns and comments.

October is Women in Small Business Month, meet three entrepreneurs at Moon Java Cafe

The evening will feature Kathy Ferrara from Batavia’s Original, Alecia Kaus from Video News Service, and Rachel Warren from Woodrow Grooming.

'O-A Broadway Cabaret' Music Department fundraiser concert after Open House, desserts follow

Oakfield-Alabama High School will perform a fundraising concert for its Music Department this evening -- Thursday, Oct. 10 -- at 7 o'clock in the middle/high school auditorium.

The "O-A Broadway Cabaret" immediately follows this afternoon's Open House.

It will feature high school ensemble and soloists.

A dessert reception follows.

Suggested donation to attend is $5 for adults and $1 for students.

The school is located at 7001 Lewiston Road, Oakfield.

County Health Department holds free anti-rabies clinic at Le Roy Village Highway Garage

The Genesee County Health Department is holding a free anti-rabies immunization clinic on Thursday, Oct. 17th, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Le Roy Village Highway Garage, 58 North St., Le Roy.

Vaccinations are free for dogs, cats and ferrets. Each animal must be leashed or crated and accompanied by an adult who can control the animal. Voluntary donations are accepted.

Reel Discussion at Richmond library: 'The Public' about homeless people defiantly sheltering in an Ohio library in winter

Richmond Memorial Library will show the movie "The Public" at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24th. The library is at 19 Ross St. in Batavia.

Come view the movie and join us for a group discussion afterward.

"The Public" is about an act of civil disobedience that turns into a standoff with police when homeless people in Cincinnati take over the public library to seek shelter from the bitter cold.

Duo of Eastman School of Music grad students perform classical music at Richmond library

Reilly-Torrisi Duo will perform a classical music concert at Richmond Memorial Library at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22nd.

It will take place in the Reading Room.

The Eastman School of Music graduates debuted as a duo earlier this year with eclectic, crowd-pleasing programs designed to showcase their skills on the violin and classical guitar.

Charity benefit at Stan's Harley-Davidson for injured motorcycle racer

Jeremy Higgins, a national flat track motorcycle racer with ties to Rochester and the Western New York area was seriously injured in a racing accident in Springfield, Ill., last month.

He suffered several injuries, which included multiple broken bones, but more seriously, swelling of his brain that required emergency surgery. He and his wife, Amber, will need to stay at a hospital in Springfield for several weeks before being able to be transported back home to New York.

Meat Raffle at Slomba Hall to benefit nonprofit Harvester Theater 56 Dance Academy

A Meat Raffle to benefit the nonprofit Harvester 56 Theater Dance Academy will be held Friday, Nov. 15, at Ascension Parish's Slomba Hall, located at 17 Sumner St. in the City of Batavia.

Doors open at 5:30; first spin is at 6:45 p.m.

This fast-paced and fun evening will not only be entertaining, it will leave you with a cooler of fantasic meat supplied by the Alabama Holley Farm Meat Market.

Tickets are $10 each and include dinner provided by the Dibble Family Center, and beer and pop. Cash bar will be available for other drink purchases.

Renowned Pennsylvania quilter teaches 'painted appliqué' class to make Monarch Butterfly quilt

The members of the Museum Quilt Guild of Batavia will soon be enjoying the talents of renowned quilter and instructor, Linda M. Poole, of Milford, Pa., when she visits the guild for three days next month. The public is also invited.

Author of "Painted Appliqué: A New Approach," Poole stays busy as a quilt instructor, lecturer, and fabric designer, and her life revolves around photography, writing, painting and sewing.
