HLOM hosts Westside Ghost Walk

Back and expanded by popular demand, please join the Holland Land Office Museum for a Westside Ghost Walk on one more Friday in October.

The walk will be led by Connie Boyd at 7 p.m. on Oct. 25.

Take a walk on the Westside and hear tales of murders, hangings, grave robbing, ghosts and other eerie happenings from Batavia's past.

Hear stories of Joseph Ellicott, E. N. Rowell and other famous and infamous Batavians.

Admission is $10 and reservations are required.

SOLD OUT: Candlelight guided ghost walk through historic Batavia Cemetery

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!

Join us to meet the famous and infamous movers and shakers who shaped and influenced the City of Batavia on Saturday, Oct. 26th, when the Batavia Cemetery Association will host a candlelight guided ghost walk through the Historic Batavia Cemetery on Harvester Avenue in Batavia.

The guided tour on candlelit paths will bring guests to meet men and women of Batavia, who, for various reasons, held great power and exerted great influence in their day, were victims of tragic events, or both.

ILGR's annual Taste of Independence fundraiser - at Slomba Hall

Sixth Annual Taste of Independence food-sampling extravaganza is being held by Independent Living of the Genesee Region (ILGR) from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Ascension Parish -- Slomba Hall, 17 Sumner St., Batavia.

Guests can try some signature dishes of the Genesee region’s finest restaurants, plus a Live Auction, a basket raffle and 50/50 split club.

FED Talk at Arbor House: Pair of speakers talk about overcoming drug addiction, free meal, fellowship

FED Talks are an evening of savory meals, exciting talks, and group conversations on a series of topics that the contemporary church must address. Pairs of speakers will give talks that challenge, entertain and inspire.

Be fed twice in body and soul, as we journey together in discussing how our mission to be hope in the world involves entering into areas of great tension, but also great need.

At this FED talk, we will be welcoming Ryan Bobzin and Jose Rene Ortiz as they discuss overcoming drug addiction.

GCC's Homecoming Weekend kicks off at Ken's Charcoal Pits for downtown Cougar Crawl

Join Genesee Community College's Homecoming Weekend celebration, which begins with the Cougar Crawl on Friday, Sept. 20.

The Salvation Army's chicken BBQ and auction at its East Main Street facility

The Salvation Army is hosting a Chicken BBQ and Harvest Festival Auction on Saturday, Sept. 14th at its facility at 529 E. Main St. in Batavia.

“We have had such a wonderful outpouring of support from the community each year and we are thrilled to see the same positive success again this year,” said Capt. Rachel Moore who, along with her husband, Lt. Bradley Moore, are the local leaders of The Salvation Army of Batavia and Greater Genesee County.

BHS Class of '89 holds 30th reunion at Center Street Smokehouse

The Batavia High School Class of 1989 will celebrate its 30th class reunion at Center Street Smokehouse, located at 20 Center St. in Batavia, on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The event starts at 7 p.m.

Ticket prices are $15 per person, which includes appetizers and money to use toward purchasing a brick that will be placed at the new Daniel A. VanDetta Stadium at Woodward Field in our class name.

If you are interested in attending, you may purchase a ticket by Venmo @Melissa-Kasmarek or paying at the door.

There will be a cash bar.

GLOWOUT/GO OUT! hosts program on 'Education, Advocacy and Activism' at GO ART! for the LGBTQ community

GLOWOUT/GO OUT! is hosting its first in a series of educational programs presented by Human Rights Campaign (HRC) at GO ART! 201 E. Main St., Batavia, on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Carol Ebersole-Weiss of HRC's National Board of Governors will speak on "Education, Advocacy and Activism."

HRC advocates for LGBTQ equality and civil rights and will be introducing its work and mission. There will be a presentation and Q & A to follow.

Opening Reception at Williams Gallery in Rochester for Batavia resident Don Burkel's exhibit 'Natural Abstractions,' a collaboration with Jim Thomas

An exhibition of photography and drawings titled "Natural Abstractions" by Batavia resident Don Burkel and his longtime friend Jim Thomas, of Victor, is on display Friday, Sept. 6 through Oct. 14 at the Williams Gallery in Rochester.

An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6.

The Williams Gallery is located inside the First Unitarian Church, 220 Winton Road, Rochester.

$10,000 grant check presented at Elba Central School Board meeting in library, money will strengthen STEM education

Elba Central School has been awarded a $10,000 grant to enhance its curriculum for STEM -- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

By working with farmers, America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education Program, sponsored by the Bayer Fund, awarded $2.3 million in grants nationwide this year to strengthen STEM education in rural schools.

The schools that received grants were nominated and selected by farmers in their communities and Elba's farmers answered the call to strengthen STEM education.

Free anti-rabies clinic at Pembroke Highway Department

The Genesee County Health Department is offering a free Anti-Rabies Immunization Clinic on Thursday, Sept. 19th, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Pembroke Highway Department, 1145 Main Road (Route 5), Pembroke.

Vaccinations are free for dogs, cats and ferrets. Each animal must be leashed or crated and accompanied by an adult who can control the animal. Voluntary donations are accepted.

Byron-Bergen Sports Boosters annual Day of Soccer, benefits two charities

The Byron-Bergen Sports Boosters fourth annual Day of Soccer (Homecoming) will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14.

This is also the eighth annual fundraising event of the Byron-Bergen Girls Varsity Soccer Team.

Girls' teams and boys' teams will play soccer all day. There will also be gift basket raffles, 50/50 raffles, along with concessions. Proceeds from this event will go to the Wilmot Cancer Institute and, added this year, Crossroads House.

The games will be played at the Byron-Bergen Soccer Stadium, 6917 W. Bergen Road, Bergen.
