Free car seat safety inspection at city fire headquarters -- by appointment only

The City of Batavia Fire Department, will be offering free car seat inspections and education to parents and caregivers from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Fire Headquarters, located at 18 Evans St., by appointment only.

Please call (585) 345-6375 to schedule an appointment. This event is part of National Car Seat Check Saturday, and will include instruction on how to choose the right car seats for children, with an emphasis on how to install seats correctly.

Candlelight vigil for SCJ Ruth Bader Ginsburg at Le Roy Village Hall

Anna Sorensen is organizing a Ruth Bader Ginsburg candlelight vigil tonight at 8 o'clock (Sept. 19) at Le Roy Village Hall, located at 3 W. Main St. They will be meeting by the women's suffrage post.

Wear black, wear a mask, and bring a candle. Parking may be an issue. Please consider walking if possible!

Virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate B-B library renovations

The Town of Bergen and the Byron-Bergen Public Library will host a virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. to celebrate the renovations that were completed last spring at the 13 S. Lake Ave. building.

POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony at Le Roy American Legion hall

Commander David Rumsey announces that at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18th, there will be a brief ceremony for POW/MIA Recognition Day at the memorial park outside the Botts-Fiorito American Legion Post #576, located at 53 W. Main St. Village of Le Roy.

What is National POW/MIA Recognition Day?

The United States’ National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed across the nation on the third Friday of September each year. Many Americans take the time to remember those who were prisoners of war (POW) and those who are missing in action (MIA), as well as their families.

Meetings are currently being held via Zoom and in keeping with Open Meeting Laws, Genesee County residents may attend virtually.

Preregister for virtual screening, panel discussion of suicide prevention film 'The S Word'

September is Suicide Prevention Month. The Suicide Prevention Coalitions of Genesee, Orleans & Wyoming Counties in partnership with NAMI Rochester will present a film by Lisa Klein, "The S Word," from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22.

This will be a virtual screening, followed by a panel discussion with Kristina Mossgraber and Cheryl Netter who will share their perspectives. Both are suicide survivors who have turned their experience into advocating for mental health.

GLOW Women Rise and YWCA offer free school school supplies, voter registration, light snacks at Austin Park

GLOW Women Rise and the YWCA of Genesee County want to help families going back to school. On Monday, Sept. 14th in the City of Batavia's Austin Park, there will be tables set up offering school supplies, voter registration if needed, a light snack and, most important, support for moms!

Pembroke Corfu Darien Kiwanis Club holds 13th Annual Car Cruise & Fall Festival at Pembroke Town Park

The Pembroke Corfu Darien Kiwanis Club is holding their 13th Annual Car Cruise and Fall Festival on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Pembroke Town Park on Route 77, 8799 Alleghany Road, Pembroke (next to the high school). Rain or shine!

There will be music, a variety of vendors, food trucks, basket raffle and grilled lunch by Crossroads House, and lots 'n' lots of CLASSIC CARS!

This event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a free Kid’s Car Cruise for ages 8 and under from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cruise registration starts at 9 a.m.

Session 2: Excelsior Energy Project in Town of Byron virtual open house via phone or online

The community is cordially invited to attend a virtual open house on Monday, Aug. 31 with one-hour sessions at noon and 6 p.m. for the Excelsior Energy Project, a 280-megawatt solar energy generating facility with 20 megawatts of energy storage proposed in the Town of Byron.

Just Kings host drive-thru BBQ on Harvester Avenue until sold out

Just Kings, the newly formed group dedicated to achieving equality and racial justice in Batavia and Genesee County, is hosting a drive-thru cookout starting at noon Saturday, Aug. 22, until sold out.

It will be at 25 Harvester Center in the City of Batavia. Cost is $12 for a dinner with two sides.

Choose BBQ or pulled pork. Side dishes (you get two) are mac & cheese, collard greens or potato salad. You can get an additional side for $2 extra.

Dessert of banana pudding or sweet potato pie available for $3.

The Genesee and Orleans County Health Departments is hosting a FREE drive-thru anti-rabies immunization clinic.

The Genesee County clinic will be on Thursday, Sept. 17th from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Genesee County Fairgrounds (5056 E. Main Street Road, Batavia).

Paul Pettit, Public Health director, notes that this is the first time the departments will be offering a drive-thru clinic.

Fifth annual Disposal of Flags Ceremony at Northwoods Sportsman's Club in Le Roy

Pony Up! Big charity sale in Le Roy to benefit Purple Pony Therapeutic Horsemanship

Attention treasure hunters, bargain seekers, supporters of worthy causes and lookie-loos, too -- the nonprofit Purple Pony Therapeutic Horsemanship Inc. will hold a big charity today.

The Purple Pony Treasure Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, at the home of Purple Pony, which is KD Ranch, located at 8321 Lake Street Road, Le Roy.

All proceeds will benefit Purple Pony. The Purple Pony horses will be around for visitors to see.

Practice social distancing; masks and sanitizer will be available for those who need them.

Deadline to register for Sept. 15 Le Roy Business Council Golf Tournament is Sept. 8

Le Roy Business Council will host a Golf Tournament Tuesday, Sept. 15 at the Le Roy Country Club.

Cost is $70 and includes 18 holes of golf, a riding cart, lunch and dinner. Or you can pay $25 for dinner only.

Deadline to register is Sept. 8.

All participants must be at least 21 years old.

This event is set up for social distancing. The country club is located at 7759 E. Main Road, Le Roy.

There will be contests for: the longest drive contest; closest to the pin; and closest to the line.

Byron turns 200! Drive-thru chicken BBQ charity dinner, plus fireworks at dusk

Byron Chicken BBQ – Drive-through Saturday, Aug. 15th at Byron Fire Hall beginning at 3 p.m., no prior sales.

A total of 225 half chicken will be served with mac salad, coleslaw, bread & butter. Cost is $10.

Proceeds benefit Byron Kiwanis, Byron Rescue Squad & Fire Department. In-town fireworks at dusk, across from town hall sponsored by Nextera Energy in celebration of Byron's 200-year anniversary!
