Lapple takes sixth at Fall championship

By Brian Hillabush

Notre Dame junior Stephanie Lapple had a great showing this Monday at Ridgemont Country Club at the Section 5 Fall Golf Championships.

The guys play golf in the spring, but the girls play in the fall and she was the only Genesee Region League participant in the event.

Lapple shot a 44 on the front 9 and a 46 on the back for a 90, which was good for a sixth place tie.

Penfield senior Sarah Tranelli fired an impressive 73 to win the event, which featured the top 28 female golfers in  Section 5.

Silver Lake Country Club Weekly Update

By Philip Anselmo

From Thomas R. Donahue, Silver Lake County Club golf professional:

Hello Golfers,

We would love to have you join us tonight!! Our Final Celebration (for all members) will begin at 5:00pm!! Free Dinner (until the food runs out), Cash Bar and Final Celebration.  Come anytime!! What a way to end it!!  The party goes until we all tire out (or the bar runs out of drinks, ha). Please rsvp through email or reply to this or you can call us in the Golf Shop at 585-237-4131.  It will help us to schedule enough staff on that date.

In case you forgot, you have a tee time this weekend.  C'mon, the weather forecast is perfect, the course is in phenomenal shape and we have plenty of space available.  You know you want to play
..now pick up the phone.

New Fall Golf Rate:  for all non-members, just a buck a hole.  Play 9-holes and it is just $9.  Play 18 holes and it is just $18.  Yes, the golf cart is included and so are the taxes.  Don't miss out!!

Become a member of the best country club you can afford in Western New York.  We are now accepting applications for the 2009 campaign. If you are interested in joining Silver Lake C.C. in 2009, you can join now. Anyone that joins now (for 2009) can play free for the remainder of the 2008 golf season.

We recently mailed out a nice letter from Ernie & I along with a 2009 Membership Application.  If you did not receive the mail-out, it is quite possible we do not have the correct address for you.  You can stop by the Golf Shop to attain a copy or call us with your correct mailing address and we will forward one to you.

Still open to the public and the best place “you can play”.  We have new lower fall rates.  Call the Golf Shop at 585-237-4131 for more details.

Tuesday Night should be a nice evening and the weather forecast is great.  The Fall Mixed League will begin at 4:15pm.  Just call the shop if you are interested in playing or you can sign up in the Golf Shop.

Those of you (48 in all, plus 12 subs) that participated in the 2008 Tuesday Night Men's League know what a great time it is.  For those of you that are interested in joining the league next year, we would love to have you added.  It is a 9-hole league that begins at 5:30pm.  The league members usually go into our bar afterwards where our staff has a very nice buffet and the bar is open for business.  In 2009 we are looking to use all 18-holes by increasing the size of the league to about 104.  It's not that hard to believe, especially when you consider that all 48 golfers from 2008 have already indicated that they are interested and we now have a total of 60 committed for 2009.

Our last sale of the season:  All in-stock Drivers (Titleist, Callaway & Nike) are just $199!!
All fairways (utility or hybrid) woods are just $109!!

Golf bags and personal belongings must be removed from storage by October 30th.

Golf shop credit must be used up by October 31st.   All accounts will be cleared on November 1st.

I am proud to announce the formation of two tournament committees for 2009:
  For the Men:
Roy Humberstone, Jan Layman, Shawn Monahan & Jeff Rase

 For the Ladies:
Maxine Fendick, Sue Spring, Eileen Witherel & Diane Wood

Their main goal will be to increase the participation in all member activities.  I will work very close with both committees as will our food and beverage manager.

WE HAVE JUST ONE SPOT LEFT for advertising on our new scorecard.  If you (or anyone you know) is interested in advertising on our new cards, please have them call us immediately.

Silver Lake Country Club is a great place to hold your next golf tournament, fundraiser, wedding reception, corporate outing, private party, luncheon or dinner.  We are already booking 2009 events so don't wait!!  Call 585-237-6308 for more details.

The new handicaps are posted on both boards.  Your FINAL handicap revision will be on October 22nd.

If you know a fellow member that does not have access to a computer but would like a hard copy of this weekly email, please let them know they can pick one up in the Golf Shop.  If they have a computer but no email, I will be happy to set them up with an email address and also show them how to use it.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week.  See you on the links.

Thank you.

News roundup: YWCA seeks volunteers

By Philip Anselmo

From the Daily News (Wednesday):

  • Genesee County's YWCA will hold a domestic violence volunteer training session from 9:00am to noon on June 28 at its facility at 301 North St. Application and registration must be completed by June 20. Call (585) 343-5808 for more information. Read reporter Joanne Beck's article for a well-written inside look at one crisis counselor's experience.
  • Leadership Genesee will host its fifth annual golf tournament at 11:00am on June 16 at Stafford Country Club. Teams of four can register before June 9. A $115 per-person ticket includes green fee, golf cart, lunch and a buffet dinner. Dinner-only tickets are $30. Proceeds will benefit Leadership Genesee, "a year-long leadership program of Cornell Cooperative Extension Genesee County." Call (585) 343-3040 ext. 118 for more information.
  • Staff writer Virginia Kropf has a fun feature in the paper today on the history of aprons. Check it out.
  • Reporter Paul Mrozek writes: "Twenty-three bars, restaurants and stores in Genesee County failed age-compliance checks this year when they sold alcohol to individuals less than 21 years old, the Genesee County Drug Free Communities Coalition was told Tuesday." That was the second highest rate since the program began in 2001. The article did not reveal which businesses failed the checks.
  • A letter to the editor by Daniel Jones was featured on the opinion page of the paper today. The same letter was posted here on The Batavian last week.
