The Strawberry Moon gets its name from the ripening of strawberries during this time of year, as well as other spring harvests and animal behavior.

This year's Strawberry Moon was significantly lower in the sky than usual due to a major lunar standstill.

This standstill is a period when the moon's orbit reaches an extreme tilt relative to Earth's equator, causing it to rise and set at more extreme points on the horizon.

The first full moon of April is called 'The Pink Moon.'

The April full moon is not actually pink. It's named after pink wildflowers, such as creeping phlox or moss phlox, that bloom in early spring. This full moon is the smallest of the year, appearing slightly smaller and less bright due to the moon's farthest point from Earth in its orbit.

Photos: Last night's 'Super Blood Moon'

By Howard B. Owens

Last night, Kevin Brusie waited up for the clouds to clear and then took these photos of the "Super Flower Blood Moon," aka Super Lunar Eclipse, over Western New York.

"I wanted to share them for anyone who was unable to see it and thought it was pretty neat, educational, and interesting!" Brusie said.
