The Alexander PTA will host its first "Junk-in-the-Trunk" garage sale from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 11 in the Alexander Middle School parking lot.
Vendor spots are still available for $5 to benefit the PTA. Advance reservations not required. Everyone welcome.

Pavilion Fire Department and Mercy EMS are responding to a call in Covington after a car overturned and landed in a ravine. A 17-year-old is complaining of back pain.
The injury is said to be minor. The location is Silver Lake and Old State roads.
On Father's Day June 19, Mercy Flight will host an open house at its Batavia base located at the Genesee County Airport from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Many local emergency service agencies, such as the Sheriff's Department (child IDs), NY State Police (rollover simulator), Lake Plains Community Health Care and Genesee County Emergency Management will be joining us.
It will be a great day to bring dad out for pancakes at the Rotary Club Fly-in Breakfast and then stop over and visit with Mercy Flight and local emergency responders.
In addition to the open house, Mercy Flight, in partnership with The Batavia Downs, will be hosting the first "Cars and Guitars for Mercy Flight" event on July 9. This all-day event will feature a car and motorcycle show in the infield along with four great bands: The Buffalo
Roadshow; the Trolls; The Coupe de Villes, and Savage Cabbage.
Great food will be available and all attendees (over 18) will receive $5 casino free play. Car show pre-registration is available online at www.mercyflight.org
To wrap up the summer, Mercy Flight and Batavia Downs will again be hosting the Hackers for Helicopters golf outing. This will be the third year for the event, which will include golfing at the Batavia Country Club and dinner at Batavia Downs.

Wires on a pole are on fire at 637 Route 19, behind a building near the railroad tracks, in Pavilion. It's about 50 to 60 feet from the roadway, posing "no immediate danger."
Pavilion Fire Department is responding. National Grid is being notified.
Also, the traffic light is out at the junction of routes 63 and 19. And a fire chief says traffic is "blowing by" without stopping at the intersection.
UPDATE 1:25 p.m.: Pavilion Fire Department has cleared the scene. National Grid's ETA is at least an hour. But all businesses in the area have electricity. State Troopers are handling the traffic situation at the lightless intersection of routes 19 and 63. The Department of Transportation's traffic detail will be responding to the intersection.
A house basement reportedly caught fire after being struck by lightning at 9977 Seward Road in Alexander.
Alexander and Town of Batavia fire departments are responding.
UPDATE 12:42 p.m.: Darien and East Pembroke fire departments are called to the scene.
UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The Alexander fire chief says other units can respond in non-emergency mode.
UPDATE 1:27 p.m.: Darien is clearing the scene. Apparently, the fire is out.
UPDATE 1:28 p.m.: All units back in service.

BHS Class 1981
The Batavia High School Class of 1981 is planning their 30th Class Reunion August 5-7th.
The activities will begin with a group mixer on Friday evening at the Batavia Downs Casino Grandstand Bar & Grill at 8:30 p.m.
Classmates will gather on Saturday from 2-8 p.m. at the Genesee County Park Pavilion D, for a family chicken BBQ .
The weekend of events will conclude on Sunday with a brunch at Terry Hills at 11 a.m.

A three-car accident is reported at Broadway (Route 20) and Warner roads in Darien. Injuries are believed to be minor.

The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce will host an informational meeting at 5:30 p.m. on June 29 at the chamber office where you can learn about this year's nine day tour of China.
This is the sixth time the chamber has offered a tour of China. The trip is Nov. 1-9 and costs $2,099. Price includes air fare (from JFK), bus to/from JFK, hotel stays, three meals a day, bus tours (with guides), admission to tourist spots, and airport taxes throughout the trip.

Elba and Pembroke high schools were chosen via a random drawing to participate in this year’s $7,500 college scholarship race to be held at Batavia Downs on Sept. 10.
They will be joining Batavia, Notre Dame and Oakfield-Alabama high schools in the competition.
Each school will be represented by one student who is a senior in the 2012-13 academic year. The schools are allowed to use any criteria they wish to pick their student.
During the summer, the students will attend at least five training sessions at the track with their driver to learn the safety and skills needed to drive a horse.
Then between the fourth and fifth live harness races on Sept. 10, they will line up behind the starting gate to compete in a one-mile dash for cash. Earning scholarships of $3,000, $2,000, $1,200, $800 and $500, depending on where they finish.
Last year, Kaley Falkowski of Batavia High School, with professional Jim Mulcahy sitting alongside, was victorious.
The 65th season of live harness racing at the Genesee County oval begins on July 25.
A Spring Ghost Tour is planned at the historic Batavia Cemetery tommorow.
It will highlight "some of the finest ladies who ever graced the community."
The guided ghost walk costs $10 and includes iced tea and cookies. Tickets are available at the cemetery gate, located on Harvester Avenue, on the day of the event -- June 4.
Tours begin at 2 p.m. and run every 15 minutes. The last tour begins at 4.
All proceeds benefit the cemetery.

The Batavia Concert Band’s 87th season of music-making and free public concerts begins June 22 in Batavia’s Centennial Park. Additional concerts and parades will feature the band at other locations and times including Batavia’s popular July 4 Picnic in the Park.
The Batavia Concert Band’s repertoire is wide-ranging in origin, period and style: marches, Big Band and swing numbers, popular songs from musicals and movies, classical adaptations, rock favorites arranged for band, fun songs for kids of all ages … and everything in between.
The band consists of about 50 brass, woodwind and percussion players ranging from talented local high school students to 60-year veterans. Many have professional experience; the rest are advanced amateur musicians. All love to play.
The conductor’s podium will be shared by veterans Phil Briatico, Wayne Burlison, Jane Haggett, Brad Meholick and Josh Pacino. Derek Reiss and Dizzy will again (tentatively) cap this year’s Concerts in the Park on Aug. 10, as a benefit fundraiser for the Batavia Concert Band.
Founded in the early 1920s, the Batavia Concert Band has brought musical pleasure to the region every year except during World War II. The band currently enjoys financial support from GO-ART!, concert sponsors, program advertisers, and individual patrons. The band also sponsors a “Sample of Western New York” gift certificate raffle from selected area restaurants and retailers, 50-50 raffles at every concert, bake sales and other low-key fundraisers.
Downbeat for regular season concerts is 7 Wednesday evenings in Centennial Park*, except a July 6 performance at the VA Medical Center, in honor of our veterans. (* In the event of rain, concerts will move to Genesee Community College’s Stuart Steiner Theater. Notices will be posted at the northwest corner of Centennial Park and announced on WBTA.)
All concerts are free. Light refreshments are usually available. Bring the family, some friends, lawn chairs or a blanket… and enjoy!

The Muckdogs open the 2011 season at Dwyer Stadium on Friday, June 17 against the Auburn Doubledays. Single game tickets for the Home Opener and all 38 Muckdogs home games are currently on sale.
A manhunt is under way but we didn't catch why. A white male, wearing white, is being sought by law enforcement and he reportedly is "drenched from falling in a ditch."
He was spotted at the Thruway entrance at the end of Oak Street and was last reported in an open field on the south side of the Thruway. A State Police helicopter is going to be airborne shortly to aid in the hunt.
UPDATE 1:01 p.m.: The subject is in custody "on the Thruway."
UPDATE 1:22 p.m.: This incident started when an employee of the Days Inn called police to report that a guest failed to pay for his room. When police arrived, he ran to his vehicle and reached in for something. They thought it might be a weapon. He ran off and they pursued him. The Local Drug Enforcement Task Force is now searching the hotel property. The subject remains in custody.
A one-car accident is reported at Alva Place by JCPenney in the City of Batavia. The driver hit a curb and possibly a light pole and reportedly seems disoriented.
Medics on scene report the driver missed the driveway and hit the curb.
Firefighters are there, too.
UPDATE 3:20 p.m.: A light pole was not struck. Medics are back in service and firefighters are returning to quarters.
A person suffered smoke inhalation following a fire in an electrical box at the car wash at 13 Liberty St. in the City of Batavia.
A city fire engine and Mercy medics are on scene.
UPDATE 3:07 p.m.: National Grid is called to the scene.
UPDATE 3:09 p.m.: The fire is knocked out and they are checking for any extension of it.
UPDATE 3:12 p.m.: Mercy unit is back in service with a patient sign-off.

A vehicle that was on fire near a house at 2560 Pratt Road has exploded. The fire is believed to have spread to the structure. East Pembroke Fire Department is responding along with a tanker from the Town of Batavia.
A firefighter says a large amount of black smoke can be seen from the Indian Falls bridge.
A woman at the residence who called 9-1-1 in a panic was told to evacuate the house.
The location is between Slusser and Powers roads.
"Be advised -- it looks like it hasn't spread to the house yet, just the vehicle in the driveway," says a responder.
UPDATE 2:37 p.m.: Town of Batavia is told "to take their time coming in."
UPDATE 2:39 p.m.: The fire is under control. They are looking for hot spots. Medics are called for a person who suffered some minor burns when the fire "flashed over."
There are plenty of opportunities to pay respects to fallen soldiers in Batavia on Memorial Day. There are six observance ceremonies tomorrow, all during the morning with full military honors, wreath laying, rifle salute and taps. There's also a parade down Main Street.

Participants will gather at 9:30 a.m. at Eastown Plaza, located at 567 E. Main St. The parade begins at 10 and will proceed west on Main Street, ending at St. Joseph’s School parking lot at Summit Street.
Dr. Matthew J. Landfried, of United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, has been appointed as consultant to the Physicians' Council for Responsible Reform in Washington, D.C.
"I am very pleased to make this appointment and look forward ro Dr. Landfried's input," said Congressman Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA). "To date, lawmakers have not been receiving enough input from physicians."
According to the council, "America is facing a health care crisis. Dr. Landfried will play a key role in recommending the next course of action with respect to health care reform and in advising members of Congress on access, quality, physician reimbursement, liability reform, and other key issues.
"The Physicians' Council for Responsible Reform is comprised of leading physicians from acorss the country who are lending their expertise and are committed to offering solutions to the problems facing the health care industry without sacrificing quality."
The local six-person team of Dave Pepper, Millie Tomidy-Pepper, Matt and Becky Ashley and Gerry and Maureen Calmes, all of Le Roy, placed 12th in the Roc City Rib Fest Cook-off.
The festival is held during Memorial Day weekend at Ontario Beach Park (Charlotte Beach). More than 115 teams competed from around the nation and Canada.
