Cars sliding off the road all over the county

By Howard B. Owens

There are reportedly "several" cars off the road along Route 98 in the area of Alexander.

One of the vehicles reportedly struck the gas line of a house at 10738 Alexander Road, and Alexander Fire is responding.

There are also reports of vehicles off the road and other property-damage accidents around the county.

UPDATE 5:22 p.m.: A law enforcement officer on scene just requested that County Highway snow crews get out to Route 98 quickly. He said the road is very slippery.

UPDATE 6:04 p.m.: A car struck a pole at Edwards and Buell streets and left the scene. City Fire is being dispatched because the pole is broken.

UPDATE 6:06 p.m.: Police officer responding to accident above: "He's going to have substantial front-end damage. He struck the pole right between the headlights." The officer is proceeding to a parking lot to check out a specific vehicle.

UPDATE 6:14 p.m.: Police are still searching for the car that struck the pole.

The police are quoted as saying: "He's going to have substantial front end damage. He struck the pole right between the headlights." Now what makes them think it was a "he"......I'll be nice here and NOT talk about women drivers, so as not to upset the women on this site!

"he" can be a colloquialism. Would you rather the cop be grammatically incorrect and say, "they," or take up valuable communication time with "he or she"?

Male or female most of the Domino's drivers drive like crap. They speed all over town. I hope they realize the others lives that they put in danger. Slow Down!! Is your life worth a pizza?

That and I can name at least five other pizza joints in town with MUCH better pizza (and that isn't even my normal localism rant or even a praise for advertisers -- though Main Street Pizza springs immediately to mind ... I mean, why would you order Domino's when you can get Main St., Santino's, Pauly's, Ficcarello's, Jerry Arena's or a whole host of other local choices? You might see me in Wal-Mart out of necessity, but not at Domino's.)

Amen Howard!! I never understand why people plaster tomato sauce on card board and eat it! Pizza Hut falls into that same category!! Batavia IS blessed with MANY GREAT pizza shops!! and Domino's or PH don't cut it!!

I got a chuckle the other night upon passing a Dominos and noticing promotional signage wherewith Dominos was claiming to be "Pizza Delivery Experts." I thought this a dubious distinction.

At the time, it occurred to me that to the extent that there is expertise to be had in the vicinity of the pizza business, that expertise has nothing to do with the actual delivery of the pizza: this is unskilled work which requires no particular expertise. Certainly there are nuances such as how and where to park one's delivery vehicle and how to correctly present oneself to obtain an optimal tip, but we wouldn't speak about anything like delivery expertise.

Making pizza however, there likely is some expertise to be attained in that area. Give 100 people each the proper ingredients and equipment to make a delicious pizza, and you will end up with something considerably less than 100 delicious pizzas. Dominos' pizza is probably a good evidence of this.

I would disagree with the lumping of Pizza Hut with Dominos in this regard. I've actually been often impressed with that other outfit's ability to produce various quality pizzas with such consistency. I agree with Howard however - local is the way to go for pizza quality and value (although if travelling in an unknown area, Pizza Hut would be a safe bet for quality pizza and family atmosphere).
