Controlled burn in Stafford needs to be extinquished

posted by Howard B. Owens in fire, Stafford.

Stafford Fire is being asked to respond to a large controlled burn at 6002 Griswold Road that needs to be extinguished.

Law enforcement is also being dispatched. The fire may be outside of new controlled burn regulations.

Stafford units are responding Code 2.

10:02 p.m.: Stafford units being put back in service.

10:20 p.m.: The pile of wood (possibly an old barn) would take significant manpower to extinguish, so an assistant fire chief and a DEC officer have advised the land owner he will need to watch the burn all night. All remaining Stafford personnel back in service.

Can't a controlled burn like this be coordinated with a local volunteer fire department? They could do the burn and train at the same time. Actually, right now would be a great time to do burns because it has been warm and dry (until last night) but surrounding brush and vegetation is still wet enough to keep fires from spreading.

Hey Bill, you know the state just passed new open burn rules, right? About the only burning anyone is allowed to do is a tiny camp fire for roasting marshmallows.

Almost all open burning is now illegal. As Doug mentioned SMALL campfires are OK. Nothing over I believe 24 inches in length can be used for a camp fire Farmers are permitted but only at certain times of the year. No leafs no brush no more burn barrels. People cant burn their old dead grass. These laws are enforced by DEC. They were behind getting the new laws passed. Dan Burling is among a few of our reps. trying to get the western new york and other rural areas to be exempt. Good luck trying to get DEC to back down.
