County legislature approves raft of resolutions

By Howard B. Owens

The Genesee County Legislature plowed through a 39-item agenda last night, taking vote after vote on a series of resolutions with little discussion of the items.

(The legislature confines most of its discussion and fact finding on proposed resolutions to its committee meetings.)

Among the items approved:

  • Authorization for the Sheriff's Office to accept a $23,000 grant to buy Tasers.
  • Approved $59,100 allocation (part of the funds coming from a Homeland Security grant) for a rapid-response vehicle for the Sheriff's Office. The vehicle will be used in SWAT actions.
  • In order to facilitate the merger of the Le Roy dispatch center with the Genesee County dispatch center, purchase of a $7,200 upgrade to the New World Systems software that powers the dispatch center.
  • Appointed Cheryl Pfund of Batavia to the Mental Health Community Service Board.
  • Authorization of communication tower construction by ITT at the Genesee County Airport. The tower will be a 46-foot high monopole and require .015 acres of land. The FAA is requiring installation of Automatic Dependence Surveillance-Broadcast technology at the airport.
  • Renewed the county's extra 1-percent sales tax for another two years. The tax generates about $8 million annually for the county.

Rapid Response SWAT ACTIONS in Genesee County thats too fricken funny. Somebody has been watching too many cop shows on TV. Why not just buy them the black SWAT uniforms and let them dress up for halloween, then on christmas buy them GI Joe swat team dolls so they can play with them. Watch out now your gonna get tased at darien lake and probably all the road blocks they put up around every firemens carnival. Sounds like the legislators need to make an appointment with Ms. Pfund. I would have cut the Mental Health Community Service Board from the budget, but sounds like most of you are really going to need it if you remain in WNY very much longer.

No matter what type of tasers they use, this should save money becoz they can be used for E.C.T. treatments for the mentally ill and walla ! "2 birds with one stone".

What is your problem with law enforcement? Is it the police in general, or just our local law enforcement? I go back to your previous posts also where you blast them as money grubbers. I obey traffic laws, I don't drive drunk, when I approach a roadblock I'm wearing my seatbelt and my insurance and registration are up to date, and amazingly enough they have not gotten one dime of my money! People who obey the law don't pay fines, how hard of a concept is that? And I don't want to hear outlandish, and unsubstantiated circumstances where "innocent" people were oppressed in foriegn countries like the last time I defended the use of tasers. I'm talking about our hard working local deputies, officers, and troopers.

State, City, County government job shops is all they are. You really think you need state, city, and county law enforcement in every one horse town or a SWAT TEAM with a "Rapid Response Vehicle" its a joke. You think they passed the seat belt law because they care for your safety, no they didn't. They passed the seat belt law among many others as a means to generate more money to support the excessive number of public sector employees. Same with the drinking age. At what point in American History did teens not drink. Lets arrest all the 19 and 20 year olds at concerts (Darien and Corfu need some extra coin). They are out to get you and your money nowadays, they used to be out to help you back in the day. For crying out loud I got arrested cause my dog got out and was boinkin someone elses dog when I lived up there.
