Something huge on Main Street

posted by Philip Anselmo in batavia, downtown.

On a few instances this morning and afternoon, I looked out the window of our Main Street office and spied an "Oversize Load" getting hauled through the city, heading east on Route 5. About an hour ago, I was in my car and spotted another such load. This time, I chased the sucker down, whipped out my camera and got a photo—and please forgive the quality: it was taken from inside my car while I was driving, er, stopped at a traffic light.

Now why would anybody take a photograph of some big... uhh, something... traveling down the street on the back of a hundred-foot flatbed? Well, mostly because I couldn't for the life of me guess what that something was. Now, I don't know about you, but I'm often intrigued by the unknown, especially when it's that large and in my face and unabashedly downtown.

Here's a shot:

This was taken near the intersection of Route 5 and Route 33 as the object in question was headed east toward the town of Stafford. What do you think it is? It looked like it could have been some part of a high-tech flying machine. Or maybe some billionaire mad scientist is constructing an underground lair.

I think it's for a wind turbine..I've seen them before on Main St. ,but they are usually going out rte.98 towards Attica.

Definitely for wind turbines. During the past summer and the summer of 2007, these were on the roads constantly. I live at the intersection of Routes 77 and 20 in Darien, and there about 7-10 per day during the summer. They always come from the South on 77, and take a right heading East on Route 20. That's the extent of my knowledge.

I don't quite understand the argument against Wind Turbines, I agree that communities should have a choice in the matter.....But come on guys, we're in the midst of a national energy crisis, your viewing pleasure should take a backseat to trying to find newer and better ways to provide electricity.

I don't recall anyone stating their position for or against wind turbines....unless you were observing out loud. I also did not mention that I like or dislike these turbines. There was no connotation in my text. I merely pointed out that there are 7-10 turbines that go through a day in order to substantiate my personal experiences as a means of informing people. Discussion over.

Hi Brett, Welcome new member! I don't think Daniel Jones was addressing you but the topic of wind turbines in general. Kelly

I'm betting on the lair of the crazy billionaire. Maybe its Bill Kauffman's new writing studio. Or, a giant white out pen. I would be pro-windmill in a heartbeat if they would tell me my electric bill would go down. Call me selfish, but thats what I think.

It's actually 2 blades of a wind turbine. There is a stageing ground at the old Foster-Wheeler plant in Dansville.

Hey, Patrick, maybe it's a wind turbine to power the underground lair of a billionaire mad scientist. Eh? Eh?

and maybe James Bond will be tied to it while trying to sneak into the lair.

I'm going with UFO on this one. Maybe it crashed somewhere and is being moved to a secret location.

No, they're dismantling the "undisclosed location" that Dick Cheney used to go to. He won't be needing it anymore, and Joe Biden will just blurt out the location sooner or later.

No worries! I'll try not to fire shots across the bow so often and so soon.
