Le Roy's pool is still an issue

By Jennifer Keys

Here’s a brief update on the village pool in Le Roy.

This item is on the agenda for tomorrow night’s regular village board meeting at 7 p.m. at the village hall! A community proposal will be outlined that includes generous donations of time, labor and money to get the pool up to code and open. Currently, these generous community members are willing to get it open, but have put the responsibility back on the village and town to continue to run it together as they were before.

I would like to encourage you to please attend tomorrow night’s meeting to hear this proposal and decide for yourself if you are in support of this. It is no secret that I am in support of opening it and running it, but the village board needs to hear from you -- the taxpayers and consumers of the village and town (the village maintains it, but the town participates).

Until the pool is filled in, it is not too late to save it, if that is what the people of Le Roy want. Please attend the meeting tomorrow night.

Thank you.

Thank you, Jennifer for keeping this issue alive. We built this pool with the sweat equity and treasure from this community. I hope we can do the same to save it,

And Thank You Lorie! I can remember yourself and I walking in walk-a-thons back in 1972-3 to get the funds to build that pool and we enjoyed every summer there as kids along with our own kids..This is a travesty that it is not going to open again. What do we need to do to make this work? I am sure that everyone in LeRoy and Batavia is willing to help.. After all there are no community pools in Batavia either!!

Oh yeah -- that we did, Ann Marie. It was a united effort -- kids and adults together. And after the entire community pulled together, we had a place to learn to swim and spend the summer. What great memories, right?

We need people to go to the village board meeting tomorrow and speak up. The current board has to hear from people or they will just vote to keep it closed.

I heard that yesterday a child almost drown at the Blue Hole. This community needs a place for kids to learn to swim and spend time in a safe environment keeping cool.

Growing up in LeRoy just about every kid in town had a bike and a membership to the pool. Good times for sure. I hope they can work this out.

As a kid and a kid with ADHD I know what kind of trouble you can get into without something to do in the summer. I hope you all can get the pool opened up and started up again. I grew up in Adams Basin near Ogden. It helps community safety if kids learn to swim, as in our neighborhood swimming and fishing were the hand in hand activities that kept us out of trouble and taught us some of our life lessons. I hate to see kids lose that.

I have good memories of Leroy pool, but I also am a realist. I will attend the meeting tonight, and I hope I hear numbers that make sense. Unfortunately, the repairs that were needed several years ago were never addressed, and the facility is in grave disrepair. Let's make sure this isn't going to be a money pit.
Maintenance, liability, and staffing are among issues that need to be considered. I encourage all village residents to attend tonight's meeting at 7 PM.
And just an aside.. I really wish we had included a pool at the new high school when it was built. Don't let this chance to be heard go unused.

I agree Bud. There is no wrong or right decision on this topic - it's just about how much a community values a service. It's going to cost money to run the pool - the question is whether the community values the service that the pool provides enough to pay extra for it. Either way, you have to give major kudos to the people willing to donate so much time and effort for the betterment of the community. I hope all of your work and dedication pays off tonight with a positive response from those in attendance and the Board.

Update:
One of the key proponents of the pool has had an emergency and is unable to attend this evening's village board meeting. The mayor has informed me that the pool has been removed as an agenda item and will be placed on the agenda for our next meeting, July 13.

Citizen participation is one of the most valued pieces of our democratic process and if you made arrangements to attend this evening's meeting I would like to encourage you to do so regardless of this change. There is a place for citizen participation on the agenda at every meeting and you are still welcome to voice your ideas, questions, concerns, support.

It will be worth your time to attend both meetings, but all of the figures are not likely to be discussed tonight without this one individual. I will, of course, keep you updated and greatly appreciate everyone's input here. I have also received messages on FB and phone calls. Thank YOU!

I am very much a realist too Bud. However I do realize that we as taxpayers here invest a lot in our town and the repairs. There is a great need in this community for this pool. I have four boys. Two of those boys and all the other youth in this community have been using Blue Hole since it's closing. There have been many injuries to kids in these last couple Summers. I personally and many other parents are willing to volunteer and fundraise yearly to offset any extra cost such as the liability insurance or anything needed to get the pool back in use. It was not just an asset for our community but many other communities used it. This is not just an investment into the pool-IT IS AN INVESTMENT IN TO OUR YOUTH WHO ARE OUR FUTURE! I value all the kids in our community and through all of this they all want something to do and a safe place to swim. I grew up using that pool everyday of every Summer. I took my older kids there. I want and need it for my younger two. I am willing as a taxpayer to pay and do what it takes. Considering all the other things I pay for as a taxpayer and have no direct use of - I WANT THIS POOL BACK. This in no way is a money pit. Those that think it is have never used it apparently. If I have to repay for work to be fixed on the East Ave and other areas AS A TAXPAYER- I WANT THE SERVICE OF THE POOL BACK.
