Photo: A bit of local history and gun safety

By Howard B. Owens

Tony Mancuso sent in this photo of his father, Joseph Laurence Mancuso, handing out NRA junior diplomas many years ago.

Tony's father did gun safety training and started Batavia Archers.

Tony said he doesn't know the other folks in the photo, but said it would be great to find out who they are. Recognize anybody? Leave a comment, if so.

Many (many) years ago, a gentleman (I do not remember his name) held weekly shooting classes in the basement of the Corfu middle school - there is a pretty nice 6 or 8 lane shooting range built into the basement of that building. All the students were around 10-12 if I remember correctly. I enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, the school needed the space for storage and I was only able to take part for a bit less than a year.

Tim, I believe that was Mr. Franclemont, I don't remember his first name. I took my hunter's safety course from him in that basement when I was 14.

Yeah, Tim. In the 60's, OACS had a shooting range in their basement, too.
Probably not there any more.

I'm gonna figure someone will name these youngsters in the picture.

According to my husband, the tall fella in the back is Roy Monagan, Third fella from the left is Ronnie Plock and the young guy with glasses is Gordon Ray. (my husband's uncle). Not sure who the others are.

I believe the fellow in the back, next to Roy Monagan is my cousin Jerry Waclawski, who was raised on Otis Street and now is retired in Las Vagas

What a great picture! I think this is so interesting ! I hope more of these get posted. It would be fun seeing comments from people who remember the people or subjects involved. Gets people thinking and remembering.
