Clattenburg intends to seek District 8 seat being vacated by Upson

posted by Howard B. Owens in batavia, politics, county legislature.

Press release:

Having recently learned of Hollis Upson’s decision not to seek another legislative term this fall, I have decided to pursue the Republican nomination to be the next representative for the 8th District on the Genesee County Legislature.

The 8th District represents Wards 2 and 3 in the City of Batavia. I have been a resident of the second ward for most of my adult life. Before my election to Council at Large, I served as the second ward representative on the City Council. As the current City Council President, I have committed myself to addressing the needs and challenges within the City of Batavia. If given the opportunity, I will work diligently to address those needs at the county level.

What are her positions on the Nursing Home, Genesee Justice and the GCEDC?

Chris, Since she just announced, you might have to wait a bit. In fact, I would hope she just waits to see if you even find a candidate to run against her. She has name recognition, experience and has done a good job on Council. That's a great start.

If she's running then it's reasonable to ask her opinions on the relevant issues. Three hours ago, I didn't care what she thought about those three things. Presumably, she's given these things some thought and now that she's a declared candidate she owes everyone an opinion or two.

Chris, I think she should at least get the endorsement of her party first. And there is plenty of time to give policy statements, it doesn't have to be done in the first day (Hochul took longer than a day). I'd still just wait until you find somebody to run against her just to make it interesting.

John, tell me your not making the insinuation that if a person doesn't have an opponent they don't have to have a platform... Hell, maybe if she's on the right side of the three issues I mentioned, I won't feel the need to find an opponent.

Chris, What I am saying is that with less than 24hrs of saying she wanted to run, she has plenty of time. When you ran for this same spot two years ago we didn't see your platform until after you were formally endorsed by your party. Even your Assembly candidate, Hochul, did not let us know her positions for awhile even after being picked. And remember, you promised us a candidate for every race.

Regardless of Chris's intentions.... I think its a reasonable request to ask what her position is on these issues. I for one especially would like to hear them before she is endorsed as it will give us an idea of where she stands before her endorsing power asserts it's influence on her. Simple enough concept, although probably not realistic as she will probably tell us what her desired endorsing party seems to like I'm sure. But one can always hope for someone who will speak for themselves...damn the party line.

"When you ran for this same spot two years ago we didn't see your platform until after you were formally endorsed by your party." Wrong. The day I announced my candidacy, we did a canvass and lit drop that included a letter to 8th District residents outlining my platform. THe letter was also put up on the Genesee Democrats website. "And remember, you promised us a candidate for every race." Wrong again...not sure where you got this from so I have to assume you just made it up. I would like to have a candidate for every race, but I'm not interested in just throwing people in to fill ballot lines.

Chris, After the last sweep by the Republicans of the County Legislature, where most County races went uncontested, you said that would not happen again. But I see now that was probably post election talk. Of course, you have had 2 years to line people up. I'd be surprised if you could find enough registered Democrats to run for all 6 city races and at least 4 of the 9 legislative seats.

Certainly, the sweep isn't going to happen again. If it does, I'm moving to the Doppelganger Genesee County where there are more Democrats than Republicans, they wouldn't ever think of selling the nursing home, they recognize that Genesee Justice is very important and the GCEDC turns the majority of its theoretical jobs into real ones.

The Roach/Mallow show has started. Tune in everyday until the election to see them ridicule the Democrats. It was old before, it still is.

Bea, I have not ridiculed anyone, quite the opposite, I wished a friend good luck. From the looks of the comments above it looks like Democrats are looking to ridicule a very smart, hardworking, community driven women. This before she has even started to campaign. Marianne is a positive person so, she isn’t going to sling mud no matter what you guys do to her. There is no reason to gather up the “goods” on her before anyone has even decided to run against her or she has even been endorsed for this seat. Politics should NOT be about party! It should be about having the best person for the job. Marianne is one of those people. It doesn’t matter what party she belongs to, it’s the person that counts.

Bea, You must be so use to being wrong (a habit I guess). When we had coffee, I showed you a list of 10 local Democrats I have publicly supported. I gave you the names of three I would support this time. You could not even name one (1) local Republican you had supported. That being said, you do help make easy for ridicule.

Bea, John has a point, which Republicans do you support? I support far more Democrats than Republicans but, you choose to classify me as some type of Republican operative because, I’m not a party line guy. When will people matter more to you than party??

Charlie, With Bea, it's all about party and only party. She seems not to remember you ran (and won big) as a Democrat. You also helped the Democrats to win a majority on Council for a time.

I have nothing against Marianne, in fact I believe she is a worthy candidate. I have never asked either of you who you have voted for in the past. I don't really care. It has nothing to do with party, but it has a lot to do with you two making a mockery of any person (or party) that doesn't quite fit into your perception of how a campaign should be run; who is worthy of running; etc. Chris made a reasonable request about Marianne's stand on issues that are important. The Roach/Mallow show immediately geared up to mock the request. It's old, it's been done, and I think you both need new script writers.

Bea, Wrong again, twice in one day. Neither of us mocked Chris. We just said that in our own opinions, we see no need for anyone to give statements so fast. Chris holds another opinion, so what? And how does this translate, in your mind, into ridicule of Democrats? And we never asked you who you voted for. But at our little coffee session, bipartisanship came up and you could not give an example of it on your part, and still can't.

John I see that alot of voters vote party first..Which to me is very small minded in the grand scheme of things..I like you and Charlie believe in voting for the person who will represent me no matter what party he or she belongs to...Side note to prove my point... Alan Hevesi a democrat was voted back in even though all knew of all the corruption,, but to keep the republican form winning democrats voted him back in.....Today they gave him a couple years in prison..Maybe if people quit voting party he would have never gotten reelected only to be taken off the job by the governor..People just don't have a mind of there own..

And here you see why our govt is broken. A question to a declared candidate becomes a huge rock throwing session based on party lines and such. Its very sad when things like Mark pointed out have to happen. I sincerely hope someday a guy or lady runs who says Damn the parties this is what I believe in and what I plan to do. We know the powers that be wont allow it at first, but the power is starting to slip from them. Now how about going back to the question and where does Marianne stand on the issues we here have thought important. If we cant change the bs here at the local level then we have no chance of ever slaying the monster that national politics and govt have become.

Mark, Many of us know that there is a percentage of voters who will just vote the party line. There is also about 5% who will vote on the first line of the ballot, no matter who is running or what party it is.

Party line people don't care where a candidate stands or the type of person they are. They are really just looking to find a wedge issue for the party to use. Take for example this vote on extending the debt ceiling. When Republicans could be given blame they supported the raise, now the shoe is on the other foot. Neither side really cares about "issues", those can be changed on the fly when ever they feel an advantage can be gained. The real goal is to come up with the best propaganda to con the public into giving them power.

SO, back to this: I'd really like to know where Ms. Clattenburg stands on the issues I mentioned and, based on the enormous amount of discussion we've had here on The Batavian over the last year or so regarding those issues, i think it's reasonable to assume that a lot others reading this site would like to know as well. I'm not attacking her or 'ridiculing' her. I don't intend to run for the seat. I live in that district and I want to know what I can expect from her if she is elected. I asked fair questions that a declared candidate should be prepared to answer.

I don't see how it is too much of a stretch to expect that a candidate should have opinions on pertinent issues when they announce their intentions to seek office. This person went so far as to issue a press release; how is it too much to expect some opinions?
