Jeffrey E. "Tum Tum" Muntz

Oakfield – Jeffrey E. Muntz, 31, of Oakfield, a Fork Lift Operator at US Gypsum, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, (May 15, 2014) at Medina Memorial Health Care System, in Medina.

Mr. Muntz was born March 28, 1983 in Batavia, a son of Roy and Shelly (Waite) Muntz, Jr. of Oakfield.

He greatly enjoyed fishing, riding his wheeler, and his dogs.  Jeff had an incredible sense of humor.  He was a practical jokester who loved to laugh and make others laugh.  He had a heart of gold, and would help anyone he could. 

 

Jeff will be remembered for his belief that you only live once, for his love of pizza, and most of all, for his smile.

He is the husband of Lindsay Ryan-Muntz, of Bergen.  The two were married June 18, 2011.

Surviving along with his wife and parents are his brothers, Roy Muntz, III of Batavia, Alan and Robert Muntz both of Oakfield; maternal grandparents, Darwin Waite of NC, and Doris Waite of Oakfield; paternal grandparents, Roy and Evelyn Muntz, Sr. of Oakfield; a nephew, Roy Muntz, IV of Batavia.  Several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends also survive.

He is preceded in death by an uncle, Brett Waite.

Donald A. Smith

Donald A. Smith, 91, of the Manor House, Batavia (formerly of Alexander) passed away Wednesday (May 14, 2014) at the United Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born on August 18, 1922, in East Syracuse, the son of Arthur and Ida (Bethka) Smith.

After graduating from East Syracuse High School Donald entered the 8th Air Force, 305th Bomb Group, in England as a tail-gunner. Upon returning from WWII, he graduated from Cornell University, and was initially employed with the American Agricultural Chemical Co. He then worked as a Counselor and Parole Officer at Attica State Prison, then was Assistant Director at Rochester Community Correction Center, and returned to Attica to retire.

Donald lived for 57 years with his family in Alexander, and enjoyed vegetable gardening, golfing, playing cards, traveling, and many winters spent in Florida at Campers Holiday. He was a long time member of the Alexander Fire Department and the Alexander United Methodist Church. For the past two and a half years, he has loved the warm support and companionship of residents and staff at the Manor House Senior Living Apartments in Batavia.

Donald was predeceased by his wife, Joan (Morgan) who died December 29, 2011; sister and brother-in-law, Betty L. (Dr.Charles V.) DeFuria; sister and brother-in-law, Thelma (Steve G.) Orman, sister Beulah R. (Earl) Stone, brother Carl B. Smith and son-in-law Jack (Donna) Long.

He is survived by his six children, Morgan (Lynae) Smith of Rochester, Nancy (Hogaku) Tsurumaki of Tokyo, Japan, Barbara (Allen) Johnson of Rochester, Audrey Watson of Syracuse, Donna Long of Pulaski, VA., Carol (Brian) Vaci of Myrtle Beach S.C., 13 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

A memorial gathering will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12 at the Alexander United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Alexander Fire Department, P.O. Roxanna L. "Roxy" Lawless

Roxanna L. "Roxy" Lawless, age 75, of Perry died on Wednesday May 14th at the home of her son in Florida. She was born in Albion, New York a daughter of the late Richard (Jean Howes) Brown. She is preceded in death by her brother Richard Brown II.

Roxy graduated with her Bachelors degree in education from SUNY Geneseo. She taught school at many area schools, retiring from Warsaw Elementary School in 2003 where she taught 4th grade for 11 years, prior to Warsaw Elementary she was a substitute teacher for Perry Central School. Her love was to teach children, she was a mentor to many people, she was considered by many as a mother or grandmother. She enjoyed spending her time with her family.

She is survived by her husband whom her married on January 2, 1974 Leo Lawless, a daughter: Monica Salamone of Ft. Myers, Fl., 3 sons: Mark (Katrina) Barone of Ocala, Fl., Matthew Lawless of Kearny, NJ, Christopher Lawless of Jeffersonville, VT., a sister: Linda (John) Dale of Albion, 10 grandchildren: William (Sara) Emmons, Nicholas Emmons, Michael Sturm, Jacob Cartwright, Krista Barone, Joel Barone, Sarah Safford, Justin Safford, and Victoria Safford, 8 great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

Rosemary A. Wagner

LeRoy ~ Rosemary Wagner, age 89, of Bradnell Avenue, passed away Thursday morning (May 15, 2014) at Highland Hospital in Rochester.

     Mrs. Wagner was born February 7, 1925 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late James and Mary McElroy Hurley.

     She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Mercy Parish and was actively involved with many other community organizations.

     Mrs. Wagner is survived by her children; Ann Marie (William) Dowdle of Whitinsville, MA, Robert (Connie) Wagner of Jamestown, Susan (Peter) Weaver of LeRoy, Daniel (Carolyn) Wagner of Pittsford, Gretchen (John) Cecchini of Allentown, PA and Michael (Kristin) Wagner of Troy, IL; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Angela (Frank) O'Connor of NJ; several nieces and nephews and many treasured friends.  She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Wagner, along with 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

     Family and friends may call on Sunday from 2 ~ 6 at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake Rd. (Rt. 19), LeRoy.  Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 11 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Parish (St. Peter's Church), 44 Lake St., LeRoy, with interment to follow in St. Francis Cemetery.

Timothy Jay Hensen

Timothy Jay Hensen, 57, of Cowlesville passed away on Monday May 12, 2014 at his home. He was born September 27, 1956 in Buffalo, NY to the late Donald E. Hensen (Virginia M. Killian) Hensen. Mr. Hensen was a member of the United Church of Christ.

Timothy is survived by a brother Craig (Kathleen) Hensen and a sister Donna Bischoff  both of Cowlesville.

JEAN V. SCHELLE

Batavia - Mrs. Jean V. Schelle, 90, retired administrative assistant at M & T Bank in Batavia, died Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Genesee County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Schelle was born April 15, 1924 in Batavia, the daughter of the late Richard and Mary (Conley) Sheer.

Her husband, Arthur (Bus) Schelle, died in 2002.

Survivors include one daughter, Marlene (Francis) Lambert of Rochester, a special niece, Sandra (Roger) Bohn of Batavia and several nieces and nephews.  She was the sister of the late Richard Sheer, Donald Sheer, Rosemary Gonyea, Beverly Betties, Dorothy Bennett and Virginia Sheer.

There will be no prior visitation.  Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 11:00am

at Grand View Cemetery in Batavia.  Memorials may be made to SPCA.  Arrangements were completed by the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home of Batavia.

H. Calvin Whitmore

H. Calvin Whitmore, 80 of Alexander, passed away on Monday May 12, 2014 at his home. He was born on June 28, 1933 in Gouverneur, NY to the late Howard (Gladys Grant) Whitmore. Mr. Whitmore is preceded in death by two sisters Clela Estes and Elnina Bates.

Mr. Whitmore owned and operated Top Notch Manor Farm in Adams Center, NY and implemented strip cropping before it was a popular form of farming. He was a 4-H Leader and won many awards. He was awarded Best Conservation Farmer in Delaware County and Dairy of Distinction in Adams. Mr. Whitmore was a Board Member of New Life Fellowship Church in Attica. His greatest joy came from spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Mr. Whitmore is survived by his beloved wife Barbara M. (Mugglin) Whitmore of Alexander; sons Daniel (Roxanne) of Alexander; Thomas (Susan) of Watertown; Grant (Cathy) Whitmore of Alexander; daughters Charolette (Robert) Abrams of Rodman; Joanne (Bob) Sonricker of Attica; Jane (Lyle) Roach of Watertown; Mary (Steve) Dumas of Kannapolis, NC; Linda (Fred) Damon of Adams Center; foster-son Christopher (Carol) Lall of Adams; brother Merrill Whitmore of Dryden; sister Ortha (Ronald) Sibbitts of Canton; 35 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life, 10:00 AM on Sunday May 25, 2014 at New Life Fellowship 909 Creek Rd. Attica, NY 14011. He will be laid to rest in Sulphur Springs Cemetery.

Mary B. Joose

Mary B. Joose, 63 of Attica, passed away on Sunday May 11, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center. She was born on October 12, 1950 in Batavia to the late Raymond Beitz Sr. and Leona (Knauber) Beitz of Attica. Mrs. Joose was retired from Attica high school where she was the School Nurse for many years.  She enjoyed gardening, sewing and physical fitness.

Mary is survived by her husband Robert C. Joose of Attica; sons Jason (Ann) Joose of Ft. Hood, TX,  Kevin Joose of Retsof; brothers Raymond (Ellen) Beitz Jr. of Caldwell, Philip (Brenda) Beitz of Mesquite, TX, Norman (Karen) Beitz of Florissant, Co, Thomas Beitz, Paul (Elaine) Beitz both of Attica; sister Sandra Pettit of Johnstown; grandchildren, Brionna, Alexander, Addison and Alayna Joose, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

John L. Sutton

John L. Sutton, 90 of Clarence, passed away peacefully on Thursday (May 8, 2014) at the Northgate Manor in Tonawanda. 
 
He was born in Buffalo on July 7, 1923, son of the late Harold and Alice Appenheimer Sutton. 
 
John was a Veteran of WW II and a driver for the Local #449 Teamsters Union in Buffalo. He was also an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing.
 
He was the husband of the late Anna C. Sutton, who died in 2006.
 
Survivors include two sons, Daniel (Diane) Sutton of Akron,  Ronald (Karen) Sutton of Clarence. Three daughters, Marlene (LeRoy) Weber of Clarence, Kathy (Jerry) Sauer of Lancaster and Darlene (Steve) Noell of Tampa, FL.  Sister, Evelyn Pohle of Hamburg.  Also survived by 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchldren. 
 
He was the brother of the late James Sutton, Elmer Sutton, Alice Schaller, June Cooper and Marion Sutton.

Elsie G. Munson

Elsie G. Munson, 86 of Dansville, passed away on Sunday May 11, 2014 peacefully at home surrounded by her family. She was born September 21, 1927 and raised in Caywood, NY to the late George (Flora Nivison) Green. Elsie is preceded in death by her sister Esther Anecelle. 

After graduating from Ovid Central High School and the Freeman Business Institute of Geneva, she worked as a secretary at Sampson College. She married Donald R. Munson on April 24, 1948. The care, love and support of her family soon became a priority and remained so forevermore. Elsie was truly devoted to her family as well as her friends. She was known for her kindness, generosity of heart and sense of humor.

Elsie was a strong believer in helping other through her dedicated service as a volunteer. Over the years she was active as a member of the Red Creek Presbyterian Church Choir, member at the Noyes Hospital Auxiliary, Dansville Senior Center, member of Dansville Civic Club and a deacon at the Dansville Presbyterian Church to name a few. In 1994, at the annual Livingston County Seniorama Elsie was named the Senior Citizen of the Year for the Town of North Dansville. She will be deeply missed.

Elsie is survived by her loving and devoted husband Donald R. Munson of Dansville; daughters Donna (James) Szymanski of Henrietta; Marcia (Peter) LaForce of West Seneca; brothers Harold Green of Phillipsburg, PA; Royce (Joan) Green of Horseheads; grandchildren Douglas (Angela) Szymanski, Jeffrey Szymanski, Megan (T.J.) Woodward, Andrew LaForce; great-grandchildren Samantha Dey, Nathanael Szymanski, Kate and Cole Woodward, along with many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.

Amie M. DeLavergne

Amie M. DeLavergne, 87 of Leicester, passed away on May 8, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Perry on January 26, 1927 to the late Albert (Mabel Duryea) DeVinney. She is preceded in death by brothers Donald (Ruth), Lawrence DeVinney and sister Emma Wood.

Mrs. DeLavergne worked at Walkley Farm Equipment and that is where she met her husband Donald. She was a longtime member of Covington United Methodist Church and she was very active in many groups and functions. Mrs. DeLavergne enjoyed birdwatching & feeding, flowers, gardening and most of all her family.

She is survived by her beloved husband Donald DeLavergne whom she married August 19, 1950; daughters Sandra (Richard) Konarski of Rochester; Debra (Fred) VanScott of Stafford; Mindie DeLavergne, Laurie (Mike) Hamler both of Leicester; Donna (Glenn) White of Mt. Morris; 8 grandchildren Heather (Josh) Wittenberg, Rick Konarski, Katie (John) Trybuskiewicz, Hillary (Shawn) Beldue, Kim (Nate) Hopkins, Michael (Amanda) Hamler, Mallory (David) Hamler, Kyle Hamler; 7 great-grandchildren Jacob Wittenberg, Braydn & Camryn Trybuskiewicz, McKenna & Landon Hamler, Lexi and Liza Hopkins, along with many nieces and nephews.

Andrew J. Cordes Jr.

Andrew J. Cordes Jr., 58, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on May 7, 2014 at the V.A. Hospital in Batavia, New York.  He was born October 17, 1955 in Utica, New York, and he was the son of the late Ollie Mae Cordes and Andrew J. Cordes Sr.
 
Mr. Cordes was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He served from 1974-1978, and he retired with the rank of Sergeant.  While serving his country, Mr. Cordes was stationed at El Toro Airbase, Irvine, CA.  In addition, he served a tour in Okinawa, Japan off of the USS Midway. While in Japan, he was a Golden Gloves Boxer for the USMC, and his boxing title was “Sunny-Co”.  Mr. Cordes was awarded the National Defense Ribbon; Badge for Rifle Sharpshooter; Commendation of Meritorious Mast and a Good Conduct Medal.  He was a long standing member of the American Legion, Glenn S. Loomis Post 332 of Batavia.
 
Mr. Cordes was the owner and operator of Andy’s Auto Service in Batavia, serving the community for almost 30 years.  He was known by his customers as a fair and honest businessman.  He had a passion for fixing anything and everything, and he was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He had a great love for the outdoors.
 
He is survived by his former wife and love of his life, Valerie Cordes and their children: Marc (Lauren) Cordes of East Bethany, Angela (Brian Gildner) Cordes of Byron, Christine Cordes of Batavia and Kelly Cordes (Ron) Goodheart of Batavia.  Siblings: Liz (John) Machala, his twin sister Mary K. Cordes, Mike (Cindy) Cordes, and Cheri Hodges.  Grandchildren: CJ Anderson, Jayden Hughes, Harley and Nora Gildner, Hayven, Haylee and Holden Cordes, Aiyana and Devon Masterson.  Nieces and nephews: Amy Lynn Brown, Mikey (Sarah) Hodges, Ethan and AJ Cordes and Charlie Fite.  Great nieces and nephews, Cameron Smith, Derek Machala, Korina and Eryk Hodges.
 
Like every USMC Veteran, he lived by the standard: “Once a Marine, Always a Marine.”

Robert "Bob" G. Waterman

LeRoy ~ Robert G. Waterman, age 86, formerly of LeRoy, passed away Tuesday afternoon (May 6, 2014) at the Genesee County Nursing Home.

     Mr. Waterman was born April 30, 1928 in Batavia, a son of the late William and Margaret Gardner Waterman.

     He was a U.S. Army veteran, a very active member of the LeRoy United Methodist Church and a retired custodian from the LeRoy Central School District.  He enjoyed being involved with all kinds of youth sports, especially coaching little league.  He also participated in horseshoe tournaments.

     Robert is survived by dear friend, Beverly Hess, the Music Lady.  Bob sang for several years in her music ministry at local nursing homes and for senior citizen groups.

     Bob’s interment will be held privately in Machpelah Cemetery.  Memorials in Bob’s name may be offered to the LeRoy United Methodist Church, where he was a proud custodian and caretaker.  You may share a memory or offer a condolence at www.falconefuneralhome.com

Anna May Hersee

 Anna May Hersee, 90, of East Bethany passed away peacefully on Thursday May 8, 2014 at her residence.  She was born on March 27, 1924 in Clarence Center to the late Clyde (Magdalena) Knapp.  Mrs. Hersee was a long time member of East Bethany Baptist Church.  She loved spending time with her late husband Maurice who preceded her in death on August 28, 1997.    

Anna May is survived by her children Paul (Elaine) Hersee of West Seneca, Roy (Patricia) Hersee of East Bethany, and Ellen (James) Kostanciak of Oakfield; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

There are no prior calling hours.  A celebration of her life will be announced by the family at later date.

Judith A. Sobresky

Batavia - Judith A. Sobresky, 73, of Batavia, a former resident of Pottstown, PA, died Tuesday (May 6, 2014) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Mrs. Sobresky was born January 30, 1941 in Conshohocken, PA, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anne (Larkin) Ominski.

Judy was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed cooking fabulous meals, mentoring her grandchildren, flowers and gardening. She devoted her life to her family, and was generous beyond measure. Judy was a confidant and friend to many, offering unconditional love, support and advice. She was a wonderful, fun loving woman who had the ability to see the humor and good in every situation. She was a phlebotomist at the former St. Jerome Hospital in Batavia, and a member of Resurrection Parish. Judy will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Edmund Sobresky of Batavia; four children, Anna (Douglas) Barnard of Byron, Judith Sobresky, Eddie Sobresky, and Kathryn Sobresky all of Batavia; grandchildren, Melissa, Violet, Olivia, Zoe, and Daniel; three brothers, Joseph (Dolores) Ominski of Norfolk, VA, John (Joanne) Ominski of Silver Springs, MD and Dan (Joan) Ominski of Gainesville, FL; three sisters, Suzy (Ben) Million of New Paltz, NY, Toni (Walt) Zapisek of Ben Salem, PA and Joanne (Charlie) Rightnour of Pottstown, PA; her friend of 40 years Mary Lou Grimes and family of Batavia, nieces, nephews, and neighbors.

She is a sister of the late Anna Mendenhall. 

Calling hours are Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia.  Judith’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Resurrection Parish - St. Mary’s Church, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia.  Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Batavia.
