Kay (Keenan) Hill, 69, of Alden, NY, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2019. She was born in Warsaw, NY to the late Donald and the late Beatrice (Cornish) Keenan on August 9, 1950.

Kay was a Certified Nurse’s Aide for the Warsaw Hospital and also UMMC in Batavia. Her last place of employment as an Aide was at Erie County Nursing Home. She was also a Beautician.  Kay enjoyed gardening and she painted ceramics in her earlier years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Kay is survived by her children, David Hill of Akron, Lisa Dueringer, of Fortville, Indiana, Scott Hill of Varysburg, and Ashley (Jared) Hiner of Fortville, Indiana; stepmother, Dorothy Keenan of Warsaw; her grandchildren, Julie Earsing, Gage Dueringer, Carter Dueringer, Olivia Dueringer, Talon Dueringer, Brendan Weierheiser, Case Hill, Kamdyn Hiner, and Sophia Hiner.

 There will be a Celebration of Life from 1 pm – 5 pm on March 14, 2020 at the Alden American Legion, 13143 Broadway, Alden, NY 14004. Henry P. Valerych, beloved husband, father and grandfather, was called home on December 25, 2019. Henry, the seventh son of a seventh son, was born on the family farm in Oakfield, NY on July 27, 1927. He was a quiet, gentle man, but a force for change, love and respect.

Hank, as he was affectionately known is survived by his beloved wife of almost 64 years; Anna Schiavone Valerych; his cherished children Michelle (Charles Joseph) Mahler of Batavia, Henry Peter Valerych of Corfu and Mary Ann Valerych, at home; his loving grandchildren Joseph Henry Mahler of Batavia and Sara Anne Mahler of Buffalo. He is also survived by his dear in-laws; Rose and Frank O’Geen, Theresa (the late Russell) Cravatta, Jeanette and Bruce Tehan and many cherished nieces and nephews.

The baby of 12 children, predeceased by all, he surely had a joyous Christmas as he was reunited with his parents; Peter and Mary Valery; his sisters Josephine (Anton) Grylicki, Anna (Anthony) Figelow, Violet (Sal) LoCastro, Gladys (Baldon) Palazynski, Martha (James) Arena; brothers Raymond (Elaine) Valery, Chester (Helen) Valery, Edmund, Leo, John and Walter Valery, as well as his mother and father-in-law Nicholas and Maria Michele Schiavone; in-laws Joseph (Ida (Michael Adamus) Schiavone, Peter (Catherine) Schiavone, Lucy (Mario) Maloni and Mary (Joseph) Yacono.

During WWII, at age 17, Hank quit school and joined the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Mosopelea ATF 158, which was commissioned on his 18^th birthday. He didn’t care much for the sea and after two years in the Navy he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed Army life, serving around the world, including Korea and Germany, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring in 1966. He then worked at and ultimately retired from Graham Manufacturing in Batavia, where he was an active member of the Graham Retiree’s Group, serving as Treasurer of many years.

Hank lived a life of service. As one of the Genesee County NYSARC founders, Hank and his wife helped create and grow the agency from its inception, spending a lifetime in service to people with disabilities and their families. Hank held every office and served on nearly every committee through the years. He chaired the Membership Drive, the Genesee ARC Bowl-A-Thon and the ARC Tournament raffle, helping raise more than $500,000 in his lifetime to support and expand programs and services to individuals with developmental disabilities. After 52 years on the Board of Directors, Hank recently stepped down from his leadership position and was granted Board Member Emeritus status. Hank is forever grateful to the agency employees, particularly direct care staff who truly make a difference in the lives of so many in our community.

A current member of Resurrection Parish, he was an usher at St. Anthony’s Church prior to its closure. He was a member of the Holy Name Society. A Fourth Degree Knight of Capadonno Assembly, Knights of Columbus Msgr. Kirby Council #325, he held multiple offices, including Vocations Chairman and was Treasurer until his death. Hank was also a life member of the Batavia VFW Post #1602, a member of the Down Syndrome Parent Support Group of Genesee County and long-term Agency Representative on the policy setting NYSARC Board of Governors.  A modest man, he focused on his mission and was always surprised when recognition came his way. His many honors included being Geneseean of the Year in 1993 (along with his wife, Ann – the first couple so honored), recipient of the 2002 WNY Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day Family / Caregiver / Advocate Award and most recently receiving the 2019 Spirit of Arc Award.

Lance J. Lipinski, 80, of Lyndonville, formerly of Batavia, passed away on December 27, 2019 at Unity Hospital in Rochester. He was born on January 13, 1939 in Rochester to the late Walter J. and Thelma (Fritz) Lipinski. In addition to his parents, Lance is predeceased by his son; James Lipinski; son-in-law Scott Humel; brother Ronald Lipinski.

Lance was a member of the Sportsman’s Coonhunter’s Association, the East Pembroke Vol. Fire Department, the Junior Wilson’s Sportsman’s Club, and was a social member at the VFW in Medina. Lance was an avid outdoorsman, loved gardening and softball and was a 3 sport athlete in his younger years. Lance enjoyed having friends and family up to the lake for fun!

He is survived by his wife; Betty Lipinski; children Kenneth (Beth) Lipinski of Corfu, Theresa (Jaimie) Branciforte of LeRoy, Deborah (Tim) Baker of Batavia, Penny Humel of E. Pembroke, John Smith of SC., and Michael (Brenda) King of Batavia; brother Thomas Lipinski of Batavia, along with many grandchildren and one nephew; TJ.  

As per his wishes there will be no prior calling hours. Services for Lance will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be a Celebration of Life held in the spring.

Carmella “Millie” McVay, 82 of Corfu, passed away on December 25, 2019. She was born December 20, 1937 in Batavia, to the late Ignazio and Carmella (Dorsey) Mortellaro. She is preceded in death by her husband Alfred M. McVay Sr. whom she married on July 20, 1956; daughter Cathy Hein, sisters Mary (Tony) Cassaro, Jenny Stellar, brothers Casper (Elaine) Mortellaro and Frank (Arlene) Mortellaro.     

Millie was co-owner of Joe’s Pro Shop and Trophies since 1975. She enjoyed bowling, golf, spending time with her grandchildren, puzzles, playing cards at the Senior Center, and spending time getting her hair done by her best friend Carol Grasso.   

She is survived by her beloved children Jeannie (John) Mazurowski of Pittsburgh, PA; Mark (Kelly) McVay of Batavia; Alfred (Donna) McVay Jr. of Crestview, FL; son-in-law Marty (Kathie) Hein of Batavia; grandchildren Kelly (Erik) Albenze, Phillip (Marti) Mazurowski, Mitchell (Kayleigh) Mazurowski, Maxwell (Clarissa) Mazurowski, Joseph (Britney) Santini, Mackenna (Joshua) Fagan, Alex (Maria) McVay, Brittany (Adam) Hein, Stacy (Eric) Hein, and many, many great-grandchildren; siblings Rose (Russ) Vanvalkenburg, Anthony (Shirley) Mortellaro, Joseph (Sandy) Mortellaro and Richard (Kathy) Mortellaro.

  Gina M. Kennedy, 58, of Batavia passed away on December 25, 2019 at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. She was born on May 15, 1961 in Batavia to the late John and Margaret (Maloy) Eppolito. In addition to her parents, Gina is predeceased by her brothers; John “Jackie” and Chuck Eppolito.

Gina’s warmth, kindness, and sense of responsibility to her friends, family, and coworkers were undeniable. She was a selfless hard worker who rarely took vacation. She was a wonderful cook and loved to share her gift with everyone. She was quick to give people her opinion on any matter, take it or leave it. She treasured her children and grandchildren, and would tell anyone who would listen just how proud she was. She laughed with her whole body, cried with her whole heart. There can never be a feeling of emptiness, because she filled our hearts. She touched so many lives. She will be sadly missed, and fondly remembered.

She is survived by her loving husband; Kevin Kennedy; daughter Jackie (Dan’l Fisher) Siverling of Batavia; son Craig (Jenni) Meyer of Basom; step-children Joe Elmore and Sarah Elmore; sister Linda Eppolito; sister in law Lori Eppolito; grandchildren Alivia, Benjamin and Craig Jr.; lifelong friend Linda (Doug) Hagen along with many nieces and nephews.

BASOM - John D. Falker, 83, of Basom, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2019, at Buffalo General Hospital.

Mr. Falker was born April 19, 1936, in Batavia, a son of the late Bayard and Anna Gerda Falker, Sr..

John worked for Chapin International in Batavia, for 26 years before retiring in 1996.  He loved classical country music, Mollie B Polka Music and his dogs.  He was the "Official Neighborhood Weather Watcher" in Basom.

He was the husband of the late Sharon M. (Beechler) Falker who died on September 15, 2007.

Survivors include 3 children, Debra (Ben) Falker and Kimberly (Dominica Tubiolo) Falker both of Basom and Ricky (Kelly) Falker, Sr. of FL; 4 grandchildren, Brandon (Shelby) Falker of Akron, Dylan Falker of Lyndonville, Ricky (Rachel) Falker, Jr. of Rochester and Melinda (Trey) Sanders of Gates; a brother, Alan Falker of SC; 2 sisters Evelyn Bush of Basom and JoAnne Schmigel of FL; a sister-in-law, Judy Beechler of Oakfield; 4 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was the brother of the late Bayard "Peanut" Falker, Jr.

Friends may call from 3 to 6 pm on Monday December 30, 2019 at the Indian Falls United Methodist Church, 7908 Allegany Rd. (Hamlet of Indian Falls).  Mr. Falker's funeral service will be at 11 am Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Karen Grinnell officiating.  Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Attica. Batavia - Randolph P. Zickl, 84, of Batavia, died on Sunday, December 22, 2019, at Rochester General Hospital.

Mr. Zickl was born June 9, 1935, in White Plains, a son of the late Rupert and Jeannette Hrube Zickl.

Randy practiced law in Batavia for over 50 years and was a United States Army Veteran. A longtime member of the Batavia Lions Club, Randy was a member and former president of the Genesee County Bar Association and was also a member of the New York State Bar Association. Randy loved nature, enjoyed fishing, reading, play bridge and enjoyed Tuesday trivia night at TF Brown's. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills and hockey.

His wife, Anne E.. Noonan Zickl, died on March 16, 2014.

 Surviving are his sons; Robert R. (Mary Ellen) Zickl of Batavia, R. Philip Zickl of Lackwanna, William G. Zickl of Batavia and Donald E. Gugel of Batavia; eleven grandchildren;  Sean, Kathleen, Meghan, Joseph, James, Ethan, Ainnie, Daneale, Helen, Robert and Claire; and his sister-in-law; Suzanne R. Noonan of Batavia.

He is predeceased by his brother, Rupert T. Zickl.

                                                       Eleanor Frances Lynch, of Attica, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2019 in Batavia.. She was born on August 25^th, 1934 in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, New York.  Orphaned at birth, she was raised by her Grandparents, Samuel and Mary Calhoun. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband (Thomas Lynch), her daughter in law (Bernadette), and her Grandson (Michael).

Eleanor graduated from St. Brendan’s High School where she played Basketball and was inducted into the National Honor Society.  She met the love of her life, Tom, and they were married on her Birthday in 1956. After subsequent moves to Ohio, New York and New Jersey, Eleanor and Tom chose the house on Attica Gulf Road as their “forever home”.  Eleanor was heavily involved in CCD, Catholic Daughters and Pro-Life activities as a long term parishioner at St. Vincent’s Parish. She had a special place in heart for all living things. Her time and financial resources were directed towards animals, the poor and the preborn.

Eleanor is survived by her son and daughter (Thomas and Mary) of Attica, and Son and Grandson, Patrick and Brendan of West Irondequoit. We will miss her terribly but believe she is celebrating a Christmas reunion in heaven.

Leon Van Lieshout, 92 years, of Geneseo, NY, formerly of Albion, NY, died on December 23, 2019 after being diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2019. He was born in the Netherlands, February 1, 1927, the son of Godfrey and Anne Marie van Lieshout. Leon and his wife Hendrika married on September 19, 1956, and immigrated to the United States on September 29, 1956. They first settled in the Baltimore, MD area, where their six children were born. They also lived in Verona, NY, before moving to Albion, NY in 1978. Leon was a life-long dairy farmer, owning his own farms in upstate New York. Two of his sons, Michael and Andrew, continue to build on the farm he started in Albion. Leon served in the choir and was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Albion for over 30 years before moving to St. Matthew Catholic Church in Livonia. Leon also loved ice skating, playing the accordion, and serving in local politics.
 
He is survived by his children, Michael (Cyndy) Van Lieshout of Albion, Martina (Stephen) Moulton of Le Roy, David (Christina) Van Lieshout of Livonia, Lawrence (Barbara) Van Lieshout of Stillwater, MN, Andrew Van Lieshout of Albion, Anne Marie (Chris) Barnwell of Ft. Batavia – Kenneth R. Toal, Jr., 60, of Batavia, died on Sunday, December 22, 2019 at his home

Kenneth was born March 1, 1959 in Batavia to Marjorie Toal Kelsey and the late Kenneth R. Toal, Sr.

He was a plumber for over 26 years and enjoyed his job and the many friends he made.  Ken was an avid NASCAR fan and loved riding his motorcycle.  He was a friend to all and helped anyone in need. 

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Harold and Grace Rogers formerly of Darien and Leslie and Mabel Toal, formerly of Batavia and his step father Daniel Kelsey.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Denisse (Wait) Toal, his son, Kasey (Jodee) Toal of Darien; a stepson, Nathan (Ange) Farnsworth of VA, 3 grandsons, Brenton Toal, Lucas Toal and Paxton Farnsworth; a brother, Kevin Toal of Alexander; a step-brother, Thomas (Julie) Kelsey of Attica; a sister-in-law, Betsy (Late David) Kelsey of East Bethany; a sister, Karen (Gordon) Biehl of FL; 2 aunts, Patricia (Robert) Chmielowiec of Byron and Winny (Noel) Smith of KS; 2 uncles, Paul (Ester) Toal of Batavia and Donald (Betty) Toal of NV; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

  Stephen E. Mapes, 67, of Bergen passed away on Friday December 20, 2019. He was born on May 2, 1952 in Batavia to the late Stephen W. and Olive (Baube) Mapes.

Steve Mapes (aka Big Steve) was a kind hearted, loving man. He was an amazing father and papa and he will be dearly missed by his family and friends. His love for his family was never ending. Big Steve is finally back on his Harley to ride for eternity…Bad Santa flies forever.

He is survived by his children; Kyle Mapes, Shalyn Mapes and Nicole Mapes all of Batavia; sisters Vicki Moore of AL., Kathy Harting of Batavia; brother Richard (Cynthia) Mapes of Batavia; ex-wife and mother of his children Cindy Mapes; 7 grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

  Lance Lee Frens, 71 entered into eternal life on Sunday, December 22, at 10:19 a.m. surrounded by his loving family after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 1, 1948 in Batavia to the late Lamonte (Laura McCabe) Frens. He is preceded in death by siblings Gene Frens, Bob Frens and Lana Mower.

Lance was a Chemical Engineer and worked for Graham Manufacturing since 1967. He was a respected, intelligent and valued professional and loved his Graham family. Lance through his work traveled the world but his favorite place to be was on his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycles. He was also an avid golfer known by his golf buddies as one who preferred to carry his clubs and walk the course, refusing to ever ride in a cart. His love for walking contributed to his strong and healthy heart that sustained him through months of suffering, he never complained. Lance had a zest for life, he was honest, trustworthy and decent his entire life.

His greatest joy were his three daughters, Lisa (Greg Brennan) Frens-Harlach; Kimberly (Clifford) Frens-Gibson and Kristen (Thomas) Gomez. Lance’s legacy will live on through them. Until we are reunited daddy, we will hold you close in our hearts. “If only we could see you now….”

Lance is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children Susan Williams, grandsons Nicholas Elmore and Lucas Calarco-Gomez; siblings Pauline Walker, Larry (Kathy) Frens, Lindsay (Carol) Frens. His grand fur babies Zada and Lacey, along with many loving nieces and nephews.

  Marie Lucy Gilmartin, 100, of Batavia passed away Monday December 23, 2019 at the Grand Nursing Home in Batavia.

Marie was born on December 13, 1919 in Batavia to the late Salvatore and Angeline (Guggino) Marchese. She worked for the Board of Education, Batavia Downs and when her husband Darwin opened Gilmartin Funeral Home in 1955, she became the office manager until their retirement in 1986. She was a lifelong member of Resurrection Parish (ST. Mary’s) and attended daily mass until her 90’s. She enjoyed playing bridge and reading but her greatest joy was her family.

She is preceded in death by her husband; Darwin “Gil” Gilmartin; brothers Joseph (Gina), Dr. Russell, Salvatore (Joyce) and Dr. John Marchese; sisters Rose (Joseph) LaRussa, Florence (Frank) Acitelli and brother in law Angelo Scappa.

Marie is survived by her loving children; Maria (Timothy) Woodward of Batavia, Patrick (Lucinda) Gilmartin of Buffalo, John Gilmartin of Florida and Richard (Nancy) Gilmartin of Batavia; seven beloved grandchildren Colonel Scott (Judy) Woodward of Ft. Irwin, CA., Michelle Woodward of Atlanta, TJ (Megan) Woodward of Batavia, Sarah Gilmartin of Buffalo, Liam (Shawna) Gilmartin of Wyoming, NY., Colleen (Enrique) Cano, Nikki (Hadi) Boumessaoud all of Florida; great-grandchildren Sydney, Savannah, Kate and Cole Woodward, Kinsale and Saoirse Gilmartin, Emma and Daphne Cano and Leo Boumessaoud; her loving and devoted sister Elaine Scappa and sister in law Josephine Marchese of Batavia.

CHARLES F. “CHUCK” “THE GOOM” PUCCIO, III – Age 73, of Batavia, closed his eyes and went home early Friday morning December 20, 2019 at Elderwood at Williamsville – SNF. Chuck was born in Batavia, NY, a son of the late Charles S. Puccio, II and Celia (Gringer) Puccio of Batavia.

Chuck was a 1965 graduate of Batavia High School and in 1966 entered the US Army and served his country honorably during the Vietnam War and although that time had a profound effect on him, he was always proud to have served and loved his country. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed golf at Quiet Times Golf Course, a member of VFW Post #1602 and participated in many Memorial Day parades. Chuck will be dearly missed at the Pok-A-Dot where he has been a fixture for so many years having his many cups of coffee. He loved life and everything that it had to offer, he loved his family, adored his Kimmer and was so proud of the “one” who made his world light up, his granddaughter, Marin. Chuck was a gentle soul who left a mark on all who came to know him, with his gentle smirk, a pinch of your cheek, leaning in with a whisper, “Goomba!”

Surviving along with his mother is his beloved daughter, Kimberly (Ryan) Collins of Lake View, NY and his sweet, Marin; siblings, Richard Puccio of Batavia, Gary Puccio of CO and Kathy (John) Curtiss of Wyoming; his former wife, Barbara Ginnetti of Lackawanna along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Chuck’s family will receive friends from 12 – 4p.m. on Monday December 23, 2019 at the Northgate Free Methodist Church 8106 Bank Street Road Batavia, New York where a Celebration of Life will begin at 4p.m. followed by Military Honors. Memorials in his memory can be made to any local Hospice organization.

LENA A. DONOVAN ~ 79, of Batavia, died Saturday December 14, 2019 at Premier Genesee Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Lena was born in Warsaw, NY on May 15, 1940, a daughter of the late Salvatore and Rose (Colletti) D’Angelo, also preceded in death by her husband, James Nelson Donovan and siblings, Theresa, Joseph, Thomas, Anthony & Samuel D’Angelo, Josephine Yaquinto, Tina Vernaccini and Rose Carguilo.

Lena was a Registered Nurse for over 30 years, nursing was her passion and it carried through her career at Roswell Cancer Institute and time spent in private care nursing. She enjoyed Bingo, sewing and was always most proud of her Italian heritage.

Lena is survived by her loving sons, David Donovan of Batavia and his children, Tyler & Brittany; James Donovan of N. Tonawanda and his children, Bryce & Ryan along with several nieces and nephews.
