ADELBERT A. "DEL" SHAMP - 75, of Batavia, died peacefully Monday evening October 20, 2014 at the Genesee County Nursing Home. He was born January 18, 1939 in Batavia, NY to the late Everett C. and Elsie J. (Kiedel) Shamp; also preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn (Weller) Shamp and a brother, Ronald Shamp.

   Mr. Shamp is a United States Army Veteran and was a dedicated employee for over 40 years at both Tops Market and the former Batavia Animal Hospital. Del was a real "people person", had a great love for animals, the outdoors, Nascar and Indy Racing. He was always up for a ride in the car with a family member and will be remembered for the wonderful husband, father and grandfather he was.

   Surviving are his loving children, Todd (Sheila) Shamp of Oakfield and their children, Rachel & Alyse; Deborah (Edward) Duciaume of Oswego, NY and their children, Stephanie (RJ) & Joshua; Stacey (Todd) Gallup of Elba and their children, Christopher, Sydney, Victoria & Allison; Lisa (David) Fenton of PA; brothers, William (Diane) Shamp of Oakfield and Gerald Shamp of DE; sisters, Martha (Morris) Jones of SC and Nellie Grasso of FL ; great-grandson, Derek along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cale L. McKeown, 22, of Pavilion passed away on Monday October 20, 2014 unexpectedly at home. He was born on July 1, 1992 to Barry (Roberta Ridley) McKeown. He is preceded in death by his grandparents Howard and Evelyn McKeown.

Cale was a 2010 graduate of Pavilion Central School. He worked for Baltz Concrete in Pavilion.
He was a drummer for the band "Free Beer". Besides playing drums he enjoyed playing the guitar, riding dirt bikes and skateboarding.

He is survived by brothers Clay (Amy Chesmore) McKeown, Kyle (Ashley Waite) McKeown; sister Karisa McKeown all of Pavilion; special friend Kayleigh Allen of Elba; nephew Brock McKeown; grandparents Gary and Betty Ridley of Batavia, along with many Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.

Byron – Roland E. Marvin, 78, of Byron, passed away Sunday, (October 12, 2014) at Genesee County Nursing Home, in Batavia.

Mr. Marvin was born June 29, 1936 in Hornell a son of the late Shurley and Bertha (Henshaw) Marvin.

He served his country honorably with the Navy during the Korean War. He is a retiree of the Batavia VA Medical Center and a past Chief of the Clarendon Fire Department.

Roland is the husband of the late Sandra (Barnard) Marvin, who passed away October 27, 2010.

He is survived by his children, Deborah Baker of Oakfield, Michael Marvin of Bergen, and Dawn (Paul) Anderson-Rosten of Byron; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Alton (Arlene) Marvin of Scottsburg. Several nieces and nephews also survive along with Roland’s adopted second family, the children of Harold and Virginia Whiting.

Roland’s sister, Vera Mae Lewis, passed away just hours after her brother.

Friends may call on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. David Gerald Culver of East Shelby passed away early morning of Sunday October 19, 2014 at his home under Hospice care while surrounded by family after a long fought illness. He was 74 years old.

David was born on April 25, 1940 in Medina, NY to the late Francis and Robina (Hay) Culver. He graduated from Medina High School in 1959 and joined the United States Army as an MP. He was stationed in Puerto Rico during the “Cuban Missile Crisis”. He then worked for Harrison Radiator (Delphi) for 33 years before retiring in 1998. He married Gail “Anstey” on June 15, 1963 and they celebrated their 51st Wedding Anniversary this past summer. Throughout his life David has always played in the Monday night Euchre league since the early 1960’s.

He was also very active in the Medina Jr Mini League, serving as an umpire for many years and then coaching the “Marine Midland Reds” for several years in the 1970’s and 80’s, and then umpiring for a few more years. David was very active in the Orleans County Jr 4-H Fair serving as maintenance crew manager and Fair Manager for many years, helping to bring about many changes to the fair. In 1990 he was named Medina Journal Registers “Man of the Year”. David was also active in the East Shelby Volunteer Fire Department.

He was an active member for over 50 years. He served as Assistant Fire Chief, Vice President, President and Trustee, and was always counted on as being the first one to respond to calls. He was a member of VFW Lincoln Post #1483 and Junior Wilson Sportsmens Club. David was extremely proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments and enjoyed watching them grow up. He was most recently proud of his grandson “Nic” and his recent accomplishment of obtaining a historical marker for the “Stielow Case”.

David leaves behind his wife of 51 years Gail (Anstey) Culver, 2 sons David (Tammy) Culver of S. Alabama NY, Daniel Culver of Medina NY. A sister Catherine (Culver) Skinner of Richmond Texas. He also is survived by 4 grandchildren Ashley (Josh) Dyrbala of Oakfield, Erica Culver , S. Alabama, Chelsea Culver of Medina and Nicholas “Nic” Culver of Medina and 1 great granddaughter Chloe Dyrbala of Oakfield. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Culver in 1984.  He will also be deeply missed by “Whip” his loyal companion.

Avon: October 18, 2014 at age 76. She is survived by her husband, Norman T. Barrett; sister, Faye M. Watkins; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Janice Barrett, Robert and Anne Barrett, Daniel and Lynne Barrett; grandchildren, Janey, Jolene, Whitney (Jeffrey Jackson), Adam (Mary), Maxwell, Samuel and Shawn Barrett, Joseph and Kaitlyn Burchill. Shirley M. Maniaci, 72, of Batavia passed away on Sunday October 19, 2014 at Genesee County Nursing Home. She was born on March 23, 1942 in Batavia to the late Gasper (Mary LoCicero) Di Piazza. She is preceded in death by a son Mark Anthony Maniaci and a sister Annette Riganotti. 

Mrs. Maniaci was a resident of the Genesee County Nursing Home for the last 8 years. She worked as a Lunch Aide at Robert Morris Elementary for 20 years and was a wonderful homemaker. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Genesee County Nursing Home; Lake Plains Dialysis and to Unity Health.

Shirley is survived by her beloved husband of 43 years Leonardo Maniaci of Batavia; sons Frank (Michele) Maniaci of Batavia; Joseph (Kelly) Maniaci of Buffalo; daughter Angie Maniaci of Batavia; 4 grandchildren Nicolette Maniaci of E. Vincent D. March, 89, of Batavia passed away on Sunday October 19, 2014 at the New York State Veterans Home at Batavia. He was born on January 26, 1925 in Batavia to the late Baldasaro (Marie) Marchese. Vincent is preceded in death by his wife Rachel (Tassone) March, daughter Frances Ann March, brothers Joe, Tom and Anthony "Ace" Marchese and one sister.

Mr. March was a decorated Veteran that served with the United States Army during World War II.  He was a respected businessman who owned and operated Sleghts Bookstore. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren.  

He is survived his sons; James (Linda Stillwagon) and Christopher (Kelly) March both of Batavia; brother Stephen Marchese of California.

Akron - Walter E. Cherry, 79, of Akron, passed away peacefully at home Thursday (October 16, 2014) with his loving family by his side.

Walt was born on January 12, 1935 in Buffalo, a son of the late Dorothy Smith Nelson. He drove truck for many years. Walt retired from Alden Central School where he was the Head Mechanic. He was a life member of the Western New York School Bus Mechanic’s Association and a member of the East Shelby Bible Church. Building and flying radio controlled airplanes, playing the organ and woodworking, were some of Walt’s favorite pastimes. He enjoyed the company of his devoted dogs, Shelby and Lola. He is predeceased by his brother Richard Cherry and sisters, Leona Harvey and Andrea Davis.

Walt is survived by his wife, Irene Graff Cherry; 3 sons, Ronald (Jana) Cherry, Jeffrey (Mary) Cherry and Eugene Cherry; one granddaughter, Nicole Cherry; sisters and brothers, Laura (late Ralph) Wells, Laverne (late Adell) Cherry, Donald (Agnes) Nelson and Diana (David) Pratt; a sister-in-law, Joan Cherry and a brother-in-law, John Davis. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Bergen / LeRoy ~  Frank J. Rubino, age 85, of 21 Meadows Way, Bergen NY passed away late Saturday evening (October 18, 2014) in the loving presence of his family at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

    

Mr. Rubino was born March 20, 1929 in Batavia, a son of the late Ignazio and Rosalia O'Geen Rubino.

     He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, who was devoted to his family.  He grew up working in the Rubino family stores prior to enlisting with the US Army, where he served in the Medical Corp during the Korean War.  He established his own business, Frank's Place, in LeRoy, which he ran for 20 years.  He was an avid bowler and golfer, and enjoyed playing cards, watching his LA Dodgers and taking his annual trips to Las Vegas.

     He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Patricia Luce Rubino; his children, Francine (Bill) Moore of Ft. Wayne, IN and James (Cindy Young) Rubino of Blue Springs, MO; his step-children, Tammi (Frank) Conte of LeRoy, Julie (Robert) Cutcliffe of Corfu and David (Connie) Harper of LeRoy; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Connie (late Savie) Capuano of Batavia and Sarah (Ronald) Dusing of Rochester; mother-in-law, Josephine Luce of Bergen; sister-in-law, Alice Rubino of LeRoy; brother-in-law, Earl (Laura) Luce of Brockport, along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

     He was predeceased by a sister, Rosemarie Gervase and a brother, Augustine Rubino.

FREDERICK DANSON JR. - 74, of Akron, died Wednesday October 15, 2014 at the Buffalo VA Medical Center. Fred was born July 31, 1940 in Buffalo, NY to the late Frederick and Marion (Cross) Danson Sr.; also preceded in death by siblings Richard, Rose Marie Emerson and Marion Budziszewski.

   Mr. Danson worked for Sakrete and Kutter's Cheese Factory and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was well known for his work ethic, love of country music and his closeness to his family especially his sisters.

   Surviving are his loving children, Douglas of Oakfield, Michael of Akron, Larry (Jill) of Alden, Floyd of Buffalo, April (Michael Burch) Wasicsko of Rochester and Dee (Tom Clark) Danson of Akron; brother, Thomas "Butch" (Cheryl) Danson of Post Falls, ID; sisters, Roseanne (late Melvin Mobley) Danson of Akron, OH, Irene (James) Fox of Albion; special family friend, Mary Langworthy of Akron, NY; sister-in-law, Hazel Danson of Seneca, SC; brother-in-law, William Budziszewski of Akron, NY; 12 grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews, friends and his dog, Smokey.

Vincent Dean Messina, 75, passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2014, at his home in Haines City, Florida after a brief illness.  Mr. Messina was born on August, 28, 1939, in Batavia, the oldest son of the late Charles and Beatrice (Martino) Messina.

“Vinny” graduated in 1957 from Notre Dame High School and then went on to attend Niagara University and the University of Buffalo.  He worked as a Union Official at Batavia Downs and also worked on many construction projects throughout the area until retiring to Florida in 1999.  Vincent enjoyed the harness racing industry and was a former harness horse owner and member of the United States Trotting Association.  He loved all sports especially football. 

Vincent is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jean (Krakus) Messina.

He is also survived by two daughters, Denise (Charles) Hull of LeRoy, NY; Theresa (Steve) DiMarco of Rochester, NY; and one son, Dean (Patricia Orlando) Messina of Dunkirk, NY.  He is the loving grandfather of Anthony Messina, Christopher Messina, Andrew Messina, Lucas Hull, Lauren Hull, Samantha Di Marco and Philip Messina.  He is also survived by aunts and an uncle; cousins; along with many nieces; nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He is the brother of Charles (Patricia Tatarka) Messina and Paul (Sharon Mancuso) Messina. 

A Memorial Service is being planned for the spring at Resurrection Parish in Batavia where Vincent was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church.  Memorials may be made to Development Department, Good Shepherd Hospice, 320 W. Charles Martin Cornwell, age 66, ran a courageous race against a rare cancer, dying on Monday, October 13, 2014.  He lost the race, but gained his crown of glory with our heavenly Father. His courage remains an inspiration to his wife, children, family and friends.

Charlie was born October 15, 1947 in Batavia, New York, to Charles Webber Cornwell and Katherine Martin. He graduated from Notre Dame High School, Batavia, New York; Class of 1965.   He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He received a BBA from the University of Texas and his MBA from St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, in 1980. He was a member of the Harlingen Country Club and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Charlie’s military tour ended in Fort Hood, Texas. Friendships which began in the military remained lifelong, and some now are three of his honorary pallbearers: Lorin, Robin and Harold. Charlie would remain in Texas. The young man from the northern border met a young woman of the southern border. A blind date in San Antonio, 1976, began a commitment of enduring love. Charlie and Margie moved to Harlingen, Texas, in 1991 to continue her career in medicine as a staff pathologist at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Charlie was active in his children’s sports participation, often being a coach for the baseball and soccer teams of his two sons. He was ever the constant father for his daughter as she attended St. Anthony’s School, being well known to the small group of students who progressed together from kindergarten to final eighth-grade graduation, Class of 2011.

In this race against cancer many gracious people of our community touched his life. Not all can be named, but his family thanks all of the staff, doctors, nurses, and technicians of Valley Baptist Medical Center, Treasure Hills Imaging Center, and Valley Cancer Associates. Special thanks are extended to his oncologist Dr. Todd Shenkenberg and the interventional radiologists, and Dr. Saenz and Dr. Velarde and their assisting staff of special procedures. Charlie had a gift of wit and brought many smiles and laughter to any conversation. He has been described by those who loved him as being caring, kind, polite, and a true gentlemen. He gave testimony of his love of God and country in both words and actions. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed the camaraderie of the annual tournaments of HCC, participating in Que Paso and Life Begins at 40.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Dr. Margie Wagner Cornwell of Harlingen, Texas; sons, Charles Wagner (Theresa) Cornwell  of Houston, Texas, and William Martin (Kayla) Cornwell of Houston, Texas; and daughter, Laura Katherine Cornwell of Harlingen, Texas; sisters, Catherine Cole of Harlingen, Texas, and Margaret Patterson (Dave) of Oakfield, NY; brother, Peter Cornwell (Elizabeth) of Wimberley, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. and Katherine M. Cornwell and sister, Mary Ann Cornwell Delplato (Michael) of Batavia, NY.

Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with family members present beginning at 5:30 PM, and with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 PM, Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Harlingen, Texas, 2:00 PM, Friday, October 17, 2014 with burial following at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in McCook, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Houston Van Ness, Garrett Wagner, Christopher Cornwell, Jared Forbus, Jeffrey Forbus, Leonard Baggett Jr., Michael Longoria and Jonathan Brandes.

Honorary pallbearers are Joseph DiLaura (his lifelong friend from Batavia, NY), Robin McGuin, Harold Inman, Lorin Pankratz, Wayne Farber, and Buck Turk (Coach).

In lieu of flowers, he and his family would be honored by donations to Saint Anthony School, Texas Right to Life, Aid to the Church in Need, Wounded Warriors Foundation or to any charity of choice.

Batavia - Rosario S. Tumminello, 85, retired manager at the former Marshalls News Store in Batavia, died Thursday (October 16, 2014) at the New York State Veteran's Home.

Mr. Tumminello was born December 16, 1928 in Batavia, the son of the late Rosario and Josephine (Gugino) Tumminello.

 “Rosie” began working the Marshall’s News Store as a paperboy at the age of 8.  At 12 years old he was hired to work inside the store and remained with the store for the next 52 years eventually retiring as manager.  On Tuesday and Thursday mornings you would find Rosie and many of his friends at the Miss Batavia Diner.

He was a member of Resurrection Parish, a 1948 graduate of Batavia High School, life member of the Veness-Strollo VFW Post 1602 and a life member of the Alexander Fire Department. A US Army Veteran, he served during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey E. (Hawker) Tumminello, whom he married June 11, 1955.

Survivors also include two sons, Keith (Sandra) Tumminello of Plano, Texas and Paul (Kevin Dugan) Tumminello of New York, NY; two daughters, Annemarie (David) Baldo of Rochester and Marianne (Stephen) Scalise of Webster and one sister, Ida Tumminello of Batavia.   He is the grandfather of Nicholas Baldo. Abigail Scalise, Sarah Scalise, Garrett Scalise and Spencer Scalise.  Nieces and nephews also survive.

He is a brother of the late Mary Cecere, Frank  Tumminello, Josephine Hayden and Samuel & Anthony  Gaeta.

Calling hours are Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia.  His Mass of Christian Burial will be 12:00 p.m. Monday at Resurrection Parish - St. Joseph's Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia.  Burial with full military honors will be in Grandview Cemetery, Batavia.
