DOLORES M. RICHARDSON

DOLORES M. RICHARDSON - Age 75, of Batavia, died peacefully Thursday afternoon February 20, 2014 at home with her loving family at her side. She was born August 19, 1938 in Batavia to the late Joseph and Margaret (Spiotta) Pappalardo, also preceded in death by her sisters, Theresa Valle and Ann Richmond.

   Mrs. Richardson is a member of Resurrection Parish, she worked at Sylvania, Vincent Jewelers and was a lunch aid at Batavia High School. She enjoyed music and dancing, cooking authentic Italian dishes her cats Ruby and Garnett, she also enjoyed spending time at her cottage in the 1000 Islands. Her most passionate role was that of a beloved and dedicated wife to her husband, Don and endearing mother to their children, she also enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren.

   She is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Donald V. Richardson Sr. of Batavia; beloved daughter, Lori (John) Thompson of Attica and their children, Bryan, Steven and Owen; loving son, Donald V. "Duke" (Caroline) Richardson Jr. of Batavia and their children, Tanner and Sawyer along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

   Family and friends may visit from 10:30 -11:30 a.m. on Tuesday February 25, 2014 at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020 where prayers will be recited 11:30 a.m. followed by a 12:00 Noon Mass of Christian Burial at Resurrection Parish (St. Joseph's Site). CLETUS C. RITCHEY

CLETUS C. RITCHEY – Age 67, of Rochester, died Wednesday February 19, 2014 at Highland Hospital in Rochester. He was born March 19, 1946 in Johnstown, PA, to the late Cletus O. and Violet (Krause) Ritchey, also preceded in death by grandsons, Jeffery Ritchey and Kenneth Conrad.

   Mr. Ritchey worked for many years at LeRoy Machine and Nationwide Precision. He was a member of the VFW, Northwood's Sportsmen's Club and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

   Surviving is his beloved wife of 46 years, Onolee (Osborne) Ritchey of Rochester; sons, David of Rochester and Terry of Batavia; daughters, Debbie (Terry) Conrad of Basom and Tammy (Jack Aman) Litteer of Rochester; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren survive.

Jeanne D. Price

Jeanne D. Price, 80, of Batavia, died Tuesday (February 18, 2014) at her residence after a brief illness.

She was born in East Bethany, NY on April 30, 1933, a daughter of the late Arthur and Berniece Greening Mulcahy.

She was an employee for Kaufman Boot Factory in Batavia and Genesee Farms Store in LeRoy prior to her retirement.  Jeanne enjoyed attending church dinners and functions in the area.  She also enjoyed and loved garage sales, playing cards, traveling to the Batavia Downs Casino and caring for and feeding outdoor cats.

She was the wife of the late, Richard Price.  Mother of the late Carole Price and sister of the late Gloria Fox.

Survivors include two daughters, Vicki L. Price (Joseph Combo, Jr.) of Batavia and Julie (Stephen Landes) Christensen-Landes of Byron.  Two sons, Richard Price, Jr. of California and Robert (Renee) Price of Stafford.  Five grandchildren, Stephanie Christensen, Jeffrey Christensen, Matthew Christensen, Edward Price and Richard Price.  Brother, Sidney Mulcahy of East Bethany.  Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may gather to share memories, condolences and thoughts on Saturday from 2-5pm at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, LLC, 2 Bogue Ave., Batavia, where funeral services will commence at the conclusion of visitation at 5pm.  Burial will be in Morganville Cemetery.

SERENA M. STROLLO

SERENA M. STROLLO – Age 91, of Batavia, died peacefully on Saturday February 15, 2014. She was born August 28, 1922 in Newark, NJ, to the late Anthony and Antoinette (Marciello) Cecere, also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Ralph Strollo in 2004, son, Ralph Phillip in 1949 and son Phillip in 1996. She was the sixth of eight siblings and the last surviving. Her siblings include brothers, Jacob and Rudolph Cecere, sisters, Lucille Carver, Marianne D'Antonio, Antoinette Suckey, Perie Denotaris and Gerie Granieri all from New Jersey; sister-in-law of the late, Dr. Alphonso Strollo, Pvt. Michael Strollo (killed in service, North Africa) and Mary (Strollo) Cecere.

   Mrs. Strollo was a member of St. Anthony's Church until its closing and was a lifetime member of the Altar & Rosary Society serving as president on two occasions. She worked for the former Holiday Inn, enjoyed Celtic & Opera music, learned to swim at the age of 62 and went on to be a swimming instructor. Mrs. Strollo had a strong volunteer spirit, loved being with her precious granddaughter, Serena and her Holy Family friends whom she loved as her own family. Her family and her great home state of New Jersey were ever first in her heart and mind and she welcomed the chance to share her love of both.

   Surviving are her children; loving daughter, Anita (Joe Forsyth) Strollo of Batavia and her daughter, Serena Strollo-DiCenso with whom she remained in the care of until her passing; son,Michael (Barbara) Strollo of Florida and his son, David (Karen) Strollo of Virginia, and their son, her great-grandson, Nicolas; daughter-in-law, Leslie Strollo and her children, Dr. Nina (Dr. Michael Chopko) Strollo and Dr. Brian Strollo;  sister-in-law, Carmella Cecere of New Jersey along with truly doting and beloved nieces, nephews and cousins, especially Dr. Antoinette Cecere of New Jersey who remained a faithful and loving niece.

   Family and friends may visit from 4-7 p.m. on Friday February 21, 2014 at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020 where prayers will be recited 12:00 Noon Saturday February 22 followed by a 1:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mercy Parish (St. Peter's Site) in LeRoy, burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery alongside her dear, Ralph. Roger T. Rizzo

Batavia ~ Roger T. Rizzo, age 65, formerly of Texas, passed away early Sunday morning (Feb. 16, 2014) in the presence of his loving family after an extended illness.

     Mr. Rizzo was born December 7, 1948 in Batavia, a son of the late Samuel and Rose Penepento Rizzo.

     Mr. Rizzo graduated from Texas Women’s College in 2005 with a master’s degree in Nursing.  He worked for Methodist Medical Center in Houston as a nurse practitioner and administrator.  Since 2011, Roger served the neurology department at Baylor Scott & White Health in Temple. As a clinician, he provided extraordinary care and compassion to his patients and their families. 

Devoted to his family, loyal to his endless and ever growing circle of friends, and a dedicated clinical care giver, he positively impacted all who crossed his path.  He was the “fun” Uncle who was quick to smile, easy to laugh, and never met a stranger.  He was a cherished friend and a man devoted to his faith. 

     Mr. Rizzo is survived by his loving family and caregivers - sister, Rozella Smith of Batavia, brother, Samuel Rizzo of LeRoy, and many devoted nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Philip Rizzo, Leonard Rizzo, Joseph Rizzo, Irene Alfieri and Mary Ann Cimetta.

     Friends of the family may call on Friday from 4 ~ 7 P.M.  at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake Road (Rt. 19 north), LeRoy.  Roger's mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Joseph's Oratory, 27 Lake Street, LeRoy.

William C. Merkle

William C. Merkle, 70 of Attica, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, February 16, 2014. He was born March 14, 1943 in Batavia to the late Ellsworth (Geraldine Sondericker) Merkle. Mr. Merkle was a Dairy Farmer for many years. He is preceded in death by a brother Edwin Merkle.

Mr. Merkle is survived by his beloved wife Carol (Almeter) Merkle, children Todd Merkle, Paula (Joseph) Orlowski, Kristie (James) Rohauer all of Attica; Denise (Rick) Scimia of Darien; loving grandpa to Ashley, Collin and Connor Merkle; Joe Nathan, Ryan Orlowski, Dominic and Gia Scimia; sisters Melody (Matt) Bey and Sandy (Greg) Willey, along with several nieces and nephews. 

There will be no prior calling hours. A 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday February 21, 2014 at Ss. Joachim and Anne Parish 50 East Ave. Attica, New York 14011. He will be laid to rest in Pleasant View Cemetery, Orangeville.

Dorothy E. Benz

Dorothy E. Benz, 102 of Perry, died on Saturday February 15, 2014 at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw. She was born in Williamson, New York on August 9, 1911 a daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Hance Heath. Dorothy was a self employed hairdresser opening Dot’s Hair Fashion in 1960 and she retired in1998. She was a member of the former Christian Scientist Church in Perry, she was very strong in her faith which passed down through her children and grandchildren and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Perry. She enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, painting, making braided rugs, and gardening. She is preceded in death by her jusband John O. Benz whom she married in 1932, he died in 1959. Two granddaughters Robin and Charmaine Mosher.

She is survived by her 6 children: Elizabeth “Bette” Croft of Victor, Barbara (Ronald) Mosher of Warsaw, Margaret “Peggy” Haley of Rochester, Robert (Darlene) Benz of Archer City, TX., Linda (Dan) McGuire of Warsaw, and William Benz of Rochester, a sister: Edna Orlopp of Williamson, 21 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

ANTHONY P. (NINO) SCALIA SR.

ANTHONY P. (NINO) SCALIA SR. - Age 81, of Batavia, died peacefully Saturday afternoon February 15, 2014 at the New York State Veterans Home @ Batavia following a long battle with Parkinson's. He was born November 29, 1932 in Batavia to the late Peter and Jennie (Gallina) Scalia, also preceded in death by his grandson, Peter "PJ" Scalia Jr.; sisters, Jane Scalia and Mary Barone, and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

  He married his high school sweetheart Julia Peca on January 22, 1955 in St. Anthony's Church being the first couple to ever be married in a Catholic ceremony at the new church.

   Mr. Scalia was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He absolutely adored his wife and children and always put his family's happiness first, which is why he purchased a cottage on Silver Lake in 1966 providing his family with over 40 years of wonderful memories that will be with them always. He was a certified lifeguard at the age of 16 and loved swimming, boating, fishing. A boy scout who later attained the rank of Eagle Scout, being one of only a couple scouts in the area to achieve this, then moving on to be a Scout Master to the Explorers. He will always be remembered for his kind and thoughtful personality, his great sense of humor, his famous "one liners" and his beautiful long eyelashes.

   Mr. Scalia served in the U.S. Army as a machinist during the Korean War where he received medals for Korean Service, UN Service and National Defense. He was a member of the Batavia Lions Club, Knights of Columbus and Ascension Parish. After serving in the military he took over the family business as a self-employed plumber in the Batavia area. He retired in 2002.

   He is survived by his loving honey of 59 years, Julia L. (Peca) Scalia of Batavia; four children, Peter (Nancy) Scalia, Deborah (Richard) Seymour and Anthony P. (AnneMarie) Scalia Jr. all of Batavia and John (Kathy) Scalia of Pelham, NH; grandchildren, Jason Scalia, Rachel Allen, Jacob Seymour, Lucas Seymour, Abbey Scalia, Trevor Palone, Ashley Scalia and Megan Scalia; two great-grandchildren, Kassandra and Samantha Scalia; sister, Anne Havens of Batavia; sisters-in-law, Rose Monachino, Florence Lullo and Margaret Worth all of Batavia along with many nieces and nephews.

John F. Messina

John F. Messina, 89 of Batavia, passed away on Wednesday February 12, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born on October 2, 1924 in Batavia, to the late James (Sarah Ruffino) Messina. Mr. Messina was a lifelong muck farmer and former owner of the Mark Trail Motel. He was a member of Resurrection Parish, former Democratic Chairperson for Genesee County, member of the former St. Nicholas Social Club and active with the Salvation Army. He was an avid horseman who owned racehorses, he enjoyed farming and raising animals. Uncle John loved having family and friends around him, that’s why he hosted an annual pig roast to bring them closer together. The family would like to thank his caregivers for giving him the quality of life he so richly deserved. He is preceded in death by his wife Jacqueline Clark Messina in 1996, his brothers Harry, Joseph, Paul, Thomas and Charles Messina and his sister Rose Panepento.

He is survived by his sister Laura Baglio of Maryland, along with many nieces and nephews.

JOSEPH L. FILIO SR.

JOSEPH L. FILIO SR. - Age 77, of Batavia, died peacefully Tuesday morning February 11, 2014 at Unity Health System in Rochester. He was born October 31, 1936 in Caledonia, NY to the late Leonard and Lena (Corcimiglia) Filio, also preceded in death by his son, Scott Filio; brothers, Samuel and Leonard Filio Jr. and his sister, Patricia (late William) Biggins.

  Mr. Filio is a former Sergeant with the Genesee County Sheriff's Department, worked for MetLife and most recently served as a Town of Batavia Justice for 6 years. He was a United States Army Veteran and member of Resurrection Parish. Joe was an avid golfer, enjoyed trips to the casino and playing cards.

   He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Barbara (Biggins) Filio of Batavia; sons, Joseph L. Filio Jr. of Liverpool, NY and Todd Filio of Batavia; sisters, Carol (Larry) Hanley of Batavia, Barb (late John) Sharick of LeRoy; sisters-in-law, Angie and Sandy Filio both of LeRoy along with many nieces, nephews & cousins.

LAWRENCE P. BROWN – Age 53, of Batavia died Wednesday January 8, 2014 at his home. He was born July 17, 1960 to Jack R. Brown of Williamsville and the late Loretta K. (Laney).

   Larry was engaged in the manufacturing of various items at his business, "Creative Design" located in the Batavia Industrial Center.

Joyce J. Shoup, 82 of Buffalo entered into eternal rest February 9, 2014. Joyce was the wife to the late Ernest Shoup. 

Surviving are Kenneth (Claire) Shoup of FL, Lynn Offhaus of Java and Dana Shoup of Buffalo; 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Mr. & Mrs. Edward A. Hale

Mr. & Mrs. Edward A. Hale

Batavia - Mrs. Floreen M. Hale, 82, of Batavia, passed away on Friday, February 7, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mrs. Hale was born September 14, 1931 in Albion, a daughter of the late Mario and Sarah D'Orazio Papponetti.

A faithful member of St. Mary’s Church in Batavia, she was a graduate of Albion High School. Mrs. Hale was a telephone operator for Bell Atlantic Telephone in Batavia. She also worked at the former St. Jerome Hospital as a switchboard operator and was an active member of the St. Jerome Guild.

She was married to Edward A. Hale on May 12, 1953. They celebrated 60 years of marriage together.  He passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center.  Together, they enjoyed camping, talking long drives together but most of all spending time with their family in their home. Many of their winters were spent in their Florida Home.

She is survived by her children, Ricky (Joanni) Hale of East Bethany and Renee Hirsh of San Diego, California; three grandsons, Kyle Hirsh, Kevin (Macie) Hirsh and Keenan Hirsh, all of San Diego, California; her brother, Harry (Susan) Papponetti of Albion and Marleen (Richard) Fuller DeCarlo of Albion; and several nieces and nephews.

Batavia - Mr. Edward A. “Dizzy” Hale, 83, of Batavia, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center, hours after his wife Floreen passed.

Mr. Hale was born November 9, 1930 in Batavia, a son of the late Albert and Marie Rider Hale.

He was a graduate of Batavia High School, Ithaca College, Cornell University and Erie Institute of Technology. Mr. Hale was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Church. He retired as the assistant city engineer for the City of Batavia in 1983.In addition; he consulted with the Town of LeRoy as an engineer for several years. He enjoyed watching sports and reading.

He is survived by his children, Ricky (Joanni) Hale of East Bethany and Renee Hirsh of San Diego, California; three grandsons, Kyle Hirsh, Kevin (Macie) Hirsh and Keenan Hirsh, all of San Diego, California; his sister, Marilyn Winegar of Batavia and several nieces and nephews.

He is the brother of the late William Hale and Betty Hale Smith.

Calling hours for Mr. & Mrs. Hale will be held on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, where a prayer service will be recited at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Their Mass of Christian Burial will follow the prayer service at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Thursday at St. Mary's Church, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia.  Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Albion. Thomas H. Dixon

Thomas H. Dixon, age 60, died on Sunday February 9, 2014 at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw. He was born in Warsaw, New York on October 16, 1953 a son of the late Thomas M. and Elma Lois Souci Dixon. Tom was a graduate of Letchworth Central School class of 1971 and a graduate of Monroe County Community College in Rochester. He worked several years for Morton Salt Co. in Silver Springs before becoming a correctional officer, he retired in 2010 from Attica State Correctional Facility in Attica. In 2005 he received an honor from the New York State Bar Association for outstanding contributions in the field of corrections.

He was also a part time school bus driver and was currently working for Wyoming Transit Service in Warsaw. He was a former Trustee and Mayor for the Village of Silver Springs, and was currently holding the position of Supervisor for the Town of Gainesville. He was a former Town of Gainesville tax assessor and American Red cross First Aid multi media and CPR instructor.

A 42 year member of the Silver Springs Fire Department and Rescue Squad, where he held several positions including Vice President and President of the Fire Department, Wyoming County Republicans Committee and a Board member of the Wyoming County Community Action. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, watching his children and grandchildren during their sporting events, and will be remembered by many who knew him as Santa though out Wyoming County.

He is survived by his wife: Lynelle Kelly Dixon whom he married on May 31, 1975, a daughter Suzette (Jason Bush) Dixon of Hermitage, 2 sons: Matthew (Heather Van Epps) Dixon of Silver Springs, and Andee (Mary) Dixon of Mahwah, NJ, a daughter-in-law: Angela Akin of Perry, 3 grandchildren: Raeha Dixon, Dylan O’Brien, and Caeden Dixon, nieces and nephews: Danielle, Nicole, Bradley, Kellie and Aaron and close friends the Sands and Stewart families.

Family and friends may call from 4-8pm on Wednesday and Thursday at the Eaton-Watson Funeral Home, LLC. 98 North Main St. Perry, NY 14530. A firemens service will be held on Thursday at 7:30pm. Funeral Services will be on Friday Feb 14th, 11:00 A.M. at the Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery, Silver Springs.

Sue Ann Hurlburt

Sue Ann Hurlburt, age 66, of Perry died on Sunday February 9, 2014 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She was born in Warsaw, New York on December 18, 1947 a daughter of the late Merle and Doris Page Smith. She was a graduate of Perry High School and Bryant and Stratton College in Rochester. She retired from SUNY Geneseo where she was a secretary in the financial aid department. She was an active member of the Perry Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and Western New York Firemens Association. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack who died on January 15, 2014.

She is survived by a son: Todd Hurlburt of Perry, a sister: Karen (Kurt) Clemons of Richmond, Virginia, along with several nieces and nephews.
