Batavia - Thomas E. Dickes, 72, of Batavia, passed away on Friday, September 28, 2018 at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Tom was born October 24, 1945 in Batavia, a son of the late Edward Dickes and Marian Hoy Dickes.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia, Mr. Dickes served the church as a deacon and trustee. An avid Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres fan, he enjoyed watching cooking shows on television and International Harvester Tractors. A longtime employee at B.R. DeWitt in Pavilion, Tom also worked for United Rentals and was currently employed at Commercial Collections. He proudly served his country with the United States Air Force from 1963-1967.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra M. Dickes, whom he married October 4, 1969; his children, Brian Dickes of Batavia, Eric Dickes of Rochester and Kathleen (Brad Campbell) Dickes of Batavia; his brother, Terry (Peggy) Dickes of Batavia; his sister, Lynda Dickes of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Sharon Dickes of Batavia and Frances Dickes of Elba and several nieces and nephews. He will also be sadly missed by his faithful four-legged companion, Cody.

He is the brother of the late Richard, Clyde, Neal and Gary Dickes and Elaine Kaufman and half-brother of the late Francis Hoy.

Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia.  Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, October 5, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church, 300 East Main Street, Batavia.  Tom will be laid to rest in Grand View Cemetery, Batavia. Franklin B. Smith, 87 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Friday (September 28, 2018) at the New York State Veterans Home.

He was born October 18, 1930 in Syracuse, NY, a son of the late Ralph and Mabel Colvin Smith.

Franklin was formerly employed by Graham Manufacturing prior to his retirement. He served our country during the Korean War with the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He was a member of the Town of Batavia Fire Department.  Fixing and repairing homes was a hobby of his. Some would say he could fix anything and was never afraid to tackle a difficult project. He enjoyed bow hunting, fishing and playing bingo. Most of all, he will be missed by all who loved and knew him.

Survivors include his loving wife, Janice Dibble Smith of Batavia. Son, Michael (Laura) Smith of Batavia. Daughters, Debra (Earl) Klehn of Oakfield, Brenda (Mark) Platten of Batavia, Linda (David Riley) Smith of Batavia and Pamela (Ron Olson) Smith of Oakfield.  Also survived by 10 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Robert L. Smith Sr., Albert Smith and Lorraine Donahue.

Byron ~ Judith D. (Freeman) Acker, age 75, of Swamp Road, passed away Thursday morning (September 27, 2018) at home surrounded by her loving family.

     She was born December 7, 1942 in Buffalo, N.Y., a daughter of the late Darrell and Daisy Gleber Freeman.

     Judy was a 1960 graduate of Byron-Bergen High School and then attended the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and received her LPN certification in 1961.  She was a private home duty nurse in the Byron - Bergen community for over 25 years prior to her retirement. 

     She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and dear friend, who enjoyed cooking for others, reading, watching movies and especially spending time with her family and friends, both at home and at the family cottage.

     Judy is survived by her children, Candace Hensel, Denise (John) Prospero and Brett Acker; grandsons, Nicholas Prospero (Sarah Ledwith) and Jacob Prospero; siblings, Thomas Freeman, William (Jeanne) Freeman, James (Jacklin) Freeman, Karen (Thomas) Copeland and Jeffrey (Bridget) Freeman; sisters-in-law, Mary Backus, Ruth Ribbeck, Dorothy Dumbleton and Shirley Acker; special friend, Marie Barringer, along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

     She was predeceased by her husband, Albert "Al" Acker and brother, Darrell Freeman Jr.

CREDI, DR. MAGDI, E. ~ went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 27 under the care of hospice and surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 19, 1944 in Cairo Egypt from a Lebanese family, he was the son of the late Dr. Edmond Credi and the late Georgette Credi (nee Sayegh). He attended "College de la Sainte Famille" Jesuit School, and the Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University, graduating in June 1968. He fulfilled a mandated year of internship in 1969 before coming to the United States in 1970. He was accepted in the surgical residency program at the University of Rochester in New York, and completed his training in June 1976 . He moved to Batavia in July 1976 opening a private practice in General Surgery. He was board certified in 1978, re-certified every ten years and became Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1980. He considered himself  blessed when the late Dr. Victor deSa, joined him in July 1979 and "Credi and DeSa Associates P.C." was formed in 1981. 

Dr. Credi always believed that the United States was the best country in the world. He applied for immigration in 1974 and became a naturalized citizen in 1980. 

Dr. Credi was on the active medical staff of both St. Jerome Hospital (SJH) and Genesee Memorial Hospital (GMH). In 1980 he was elected  Chief of Surgery at GMH, a position that he held for twenty years providing exceptional care in the operating room. He was surgical director of the ICU at both SJH and GMH and was also involved in the ICU nursing education.  He said that taking care of patients was satisfying but more satisfying was taking care of the critical patients in the Intensive Care Units (ICU), a difficult challenge he wholeheartedly met. He served on numerous hospital committees notably as chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutic committee. In November 1981, he was elected by the GMH Association to co-chair with the late Dr. Sydney McLouth, the GMH modernization campaign leading to building the current Emergency Department. As the turn of the century was approaching, Genesee 2000 was formed to address the need of the county in the new millennium. Dr. Credi felt that health care delivery was also to be examined. In 1994, he approached the Board of Directors of SJH and GMH as well as the medical staffs of both hospitals to plan for the future. Hence, merger talks were started and were completed by the year 2000.  United Memorial Medical Center (UMMC) was born and he was elected the first chairman of the department of surgery at UMMC. 

As he was considering retirement in 2011, The Genesee Council for Alcohol and Substance Abuse (GCASA) approached him to serve as Medical Director. He proudly held that position for six years then due to his illness, fully retired on October 1st, 2017.

He was often ready to serve outside his community whenever his surgical talent was needed, traveling through NYS and other States from 2000 until his retirement from surgery in 2012. 

Dr. Credi  became involved in the community shortly after his arrival. He did not hesitate to join the Genesee County American Cancer Society (ACS) and served as the president. He was instrumental in having the ACS sponsor the training of the first enterostomal nurse to serve in Genesee County, a skill that had been lacking and greatly needed. 

Avidly interested in hockey, he became involved with the Genesee Amateur Hockey Association (GAHA) in the early to mid-eighties, later chairing the coaches committee. He also served as team physician for the Notre Dame football squad and was a past member of the Batavia Rotary Club believing in their motto "Service above self " 

A member of Resurrection Parish for more than 40 years, Dr. Credi was deeply touched by the continuous prayers and support of the parishioners and others during his illness. He kept his faith in God, submitting to God's will. He served as Eucharistic Minister and was honored to lead the Liturgy of the Word on Tuesdays. 

Once fully retired, he spent most of his time doing what he loved most, traveling to see his grandchildren in Massachusetts, Virginia and Georgia,  and his first passion since 1959, making home movies. His children and grandchildren will cherish these productions forever. 

Dr. Credi was dedicated to his family, his patients and his community. Married in Montreal, in April 1970 to Marie-Rose (nee Bichai) who survives him, they had six children: Candice Brady who predeceased him in 2016, Joanne (Mark Fredo) of Atlanta, Marc-Antoine (Lauren) of North Andover, MA, Jean-Jacques (Sami) and Robert of Atlanta and Elizabeth (Terry Owens) of Burke, VA and son-in-law, Jeff Brady of Buffalo. His dedication to his large family, including 8 grandchildren: Ryan Elizabeth Brady, Nicolas Fredo, Lila, Eve, Edison, Amaya and Anna Credi, and Dillon Owens did not keep him from providing quality care to his patients. He is also survived by two brothers: His twin Medhat (Sonia) of Elmsford, NY and Dr. Wagdi (Honya) of Troy, MI, several cousins, nephews, nieces, and in-laws. 

A visionary and a man of strong principles, he will be greatly missed. 

The Credi Family will be present from 2-8p.m. on Sunday September 30, 2018 at the MICHAEL S. TOMASZEWKSI FUNERAL & CREMATION CHAPEL, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020 where prayers will be recited at 9:30a.m. Monday October 1 followed by his Mass of Christian Burial 10a.m. at Resurrection Parish (St. Joseph's Site). Dr. Credi will be entombed in the Monsignor Francis L. Schwartz Mausoleum at St. Joseph's Cemetery, memorials in his memory can be made to Homecare & Hospice, Inc. 29 Liberty Street Ste 6 or a charity of the donor's choice.

Helen Roberta (Brockel) Lyon, 62, of Middlebury, New York, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at Highland Hospital in Rochester, New York after suffering a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by her loving husband and son, listening to some of her favorite music. Helen was born on February, 17th, 1956, the daughter of the late Robert H. and Nellie (Cross) Brockel of Warsaw, New York.

She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Kenneth “Kat” Lyon of Middlebury; along with her son, Thomas (Claire) Lyon of LeRoy, and many other loving family and friends.

In addition to managing several retail outlets during her lifetime, Helen’s talent and commitment to music was unparalleled. She attributed her early passion for music to her high school music teacher, the late E. John Christopher, of Wyoming, New York. Helen was a marching member of the TriTown Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps in the 1970s, where she played the Mellophone. Watching live drum corps rehearsals and performances became one of her favorite past-times. Helen was a highly-skilled pianist and a sought-after music critic, often judging talent contests both locally and nationally. Mrs. Lyon had the occasion to meet with many talented artists, including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Alice Cooper, Rick Wakeman, David Byrne, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and many other music legends, including David Bowie, whose late biography mentions her by name. Helen leaves behind a long list of musical friends who have benefited from her abilities and education, and an even longer list of friends and family who have experienced her love, kindness, and guidance. She will truly be missed.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Highland Hospital for allowing Helen to pass peacefully and for their unquestionable dedication to her care and comfort over the last year.

Aida E. Nogueira, 68 of Batavia, passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo. She was born March 25, 1950 to the late Francisco (Silveria DeJesus) Nogueira. She is preceded in death by her fiancé James Roberts.

Aida worked for many years at St. Jerome Hosptial with her sisters. She loved traveling with James.

She is survived by her siblings Lucia, Tereza Nogueira; Lueza (Richard) Dunn; Laurentina Rosa; Ed (Ruth) Nogueira; niece Lorie Nogueira, along with half-sisters and half-brothers in Brazil, step brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours and services will be private. Aida will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia.

  Beatrice B. “Bea” Graff, 85, of Bennington passed away on September 19, 2018 at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. She was born on February 19, 1933 in Amherst to the late Frank and Florence (Stanley) Brunner. In addition to her parents, Bea is also predeceased by her husband; Paul A. Graff; siblings Frank Carlton, David Brunner, Beverly Zoladz, Frances Wiltberger and Irene Wetzel.

Bea was the secretary of Graff Tire Service in Bennington and a member of St. Joachim & Anne Parish.

She is survived by her children; Paul (Sandy Becker) Graff Jr. of Lancaster, Audrey Henry of Byron, Connie (David) Rethlake of Batavia and Hugh Graff  of Buffalo; 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; sisters Betty (Thomas) Dougherty of Darien, Patricia (Felix) Dougherty of Clarence; sisters-in-law Helen, Jane and Beverly Brunner along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Avoca/Oakfield - William D. Phelps, 70, of Avoca, formerly of Oakfield, passed away suddenly Wednesday, (September 19, 2018) at his home, in Avoca.

Mr. Phelps was born July 31, 1948 in Batavia, a son of the late Virgil E. and Louise E. (Mullen) Phelps.

He attended Oakfield-Alabama school as graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1966.  He went on to graduate from Cornell University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1970.  He was a member of the AGR fraternity and a 40 year member of the Free & Accepted Masons. 

He felt bonded to the land, and spent his entire career on Virgil E. Phelps & Sons Farms first at Judge Road in Oakfield and later in Avoca.  He served as the bookkeeper in both locations. 

Surviving is his sister, Judy (Walt) Stevenson of Madison, WI, and brothers, Donald Phelps of Riviera, FL, and Neil (Teresa) Phelps of Caledonia.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.    

There will be no visitation.  Family and Friends are invited to attend Bill’s Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday (September 26, 2018) at the Indian Falls United Methodist Church, 7908 Allegany Road, Corfu.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church.  Bill will be laid to rest beside his parents in Reed Cemetery, Oakfield.

In the middle of the night surrounded by the family she cherished, Lucy took her last breaths. She was hospitalized following an injury and three difficult weeks of treatment. She was 91.

Lucy was a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a social butterfly, an incredible conversationalist, a night owl, a party queen, a fashionista, a supporter of all things her children and grandchildren endeavored upon, an amazing cook, a party planner, a fierce loyalist to her family and more than mere words can describe. She was truly a formidable matriarch.

Lucy selflessly supported the businesses her family ventured upon. Her husband’s practice, her children’s restaurants- she contributed her many talents and energy so that others might find success.

She was predeceased by the love of her life Dr. Joseph Mendola, and suffered the unimaginable loss of her youngest son Joseph Andrew as a baby. Her beloved daughter in law Elizabeth (Morse) Mendola passed in 2011.

She was the daughter of the late Peter and Lucy (Tuffero) Fanara.

She is survived by her devoted children Rosalie Maguire Simon (Glenn), Frank Mendola ( Barbara Burgess), Lucy Barnett (Timothy) and Peter Mendola.  Grandchildren: Jessica Maguire-Tomidy (Alan), Andrew Maguire (Jamie) Adrienne Barnett, Lauren Barnett (Candice Borden), Joseph Mendola ( Caitlin Mulcahy) and Frank Mendola. She was bisnonna to her great grandchildren: Avelin, Alaria, and Alex Tomidy, Hadley and Drew Mendola and Lily Mendola.

  Charlotte W. Hinz, 89, of Alexander passed away on Tuesday September 18, 2018 at the Villages of Orleans County in Albion. She was born on December 1, 1928 in Batavia to the late Frederick C. and Amelia (Egloff) Wickens. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hinz is predeceased by her husband; Wilbur Hinz.

Charlotte was the Laboratory Director at Upstate Farms Co-operative for 36 years until she retired in 1998. She was a member of the Western Association Sanitarians and the Rochester Area Sanitarians. Charlotte was the first woman President and lifetime honorary member of the NYS Food Protection Association, a lifetime member of the Dairy Practices Council and the past President and lifetime member of the Batavia Business & Professional Women’s Club. She enjoyed dinner conversations with the Gad Abouts.

She is survived by her children; Daniel Hinz of OH., Julie (Paul) Linsey of FL., Martin (Jill) Hinz of Alexander and Eric (Terri) Hinz of FL.; 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren along with many cousins and their families.

East Bethany - William C. Tapp, 76, of East Bethany, passed away on Monday, September 17, 2018 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, in Batavia.

Mr. Tapp was born August 24, 1942 in Batavia, the son of the late Charles Tapp and Margaret Mathers Tapp.

A former member of Godfrey's Pond, he enjoyed to hunt and fish.

He is predeceased by his wife, Evalene Smith Tapp and his sons, Larry Tapp and Kevin Tapp.

Surviving are his grandsons, William A. (Kayleigh) Tapp of LeRoy and Grandson, Robert C. Tapp of Batavia.

Eugene L. Dziekan “Gene”, 79 of Akron, formerly of Batavia, passed away peacefully Saturday (September 15, 2018) at Hospice Buffalo in Cheektowaga.

He was born August 24, 1939 in Batavia, NY, a son of the late John and Jennie Kropatwinski Dziekan.

Gene grew up in Batavia and later was employed by Delco Products in Rochester for over 34 years. He enjoyed fishing, playing dominos, poker and spending time at his cottage in the Thousand Islands. He was known to fix anything and if he could not fix it, then it needed to be thrown away. Gene was also known to be the “Best Grill Man” to his family and friends. He was a member of the Polish Falcons and Sons of the American Legion. Most of all, he cared for his family and enjoyed the time spent with them where he showed his sense of humor often.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Hudomint Dziekan of Akron. Children, Lawrence, Edward, Karen, Paul and Stephanie Dziekan. Stepdaughters, Beverly (Stephan) Carlson, Lynne Klawer and Suzanne. Brothers, Andrew Dziekan. Sister, Helen (Wayne) Robbins. Sisters in-law, Katherine Dziekan and Anita Dziekan. Brother in-law, Douglas Seward. Also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Steven Dziekan and brother of the late John, Francis and Richard Dziekan, Rose Dillon, Eleanor Starowitz and Josephine Seward.

JOSEPH P. MICKEY ~ age 64, of Elba, NY, died peacefully September 11, 2018 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born February 13, 1954, in Batavia, NY, the son of the late Joseph J. and Anna J. (Gavel) Mickey. 

Joe served country honorably in the US Navy aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. He was retired from the NYS Thruway in Batavia where he was employed for over 20 years. Joe enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, boating, fishing and gardening, he was most proud of his Polish heritage and enjoyed making sauerkraut with family and friends. He loved the Miami Dolphins, had an extensive "Crazy Hat" collection, but the true joys of his life were, his granddaughters, Kelly, Halle and Laney.

He is survived by his loving son, Joseph D. (Sarah) Mickey of Elba; beloved siblings, Linda Cunningham, Susan Mickey, Carol (Angelo) Gifaldi, Nancy Mickey, Gary (Tina) Mickey and Sharon (Steven) Lauzzie along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces & great nephews.

He will be laid to rest in St. Joseph's  Cemetery with his parents, and memorials in his memory can be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Strong Memorial Hospital or Genesee Cancer Assistance.
