Each of the past two Monday's I've posted a simple message: When you join The Batavian Club, you are helping to support your favorite local news site. The simple message has been working. People have been joining.

The Batavian is blessed with strong support from the local business community, but advertising is only a portion of the revenue any local news organization needs to grow and provide well-rounded local news coverage.

That's not just true of an online news site like The Batavian. It's true of any local news organization.

A newspaper garners very important reader support by dropping a physical product on your doorstep or driveway. You pay for the product and delivery. Since we don't have a physical product to deliver to your home, we offer you a package of gift certificates to local businesses in exchange for your support.

Think of a membership in The Batavian Club as a voluntary subscription for all the great news you get online from The Batavian.

So, please use the options below and join today.

TO JOIN: Use PayPal buttons below, or to pay by check (annual only) or credit card, click here to download form. Or call (585) 250-4118 to pay by credit card.

We've set up four membership tiers -- Subscribe to the club monthly as one person or as a household, or annually at either of those levels.

Members receive a membership card, bumper sticker and a package of gift certificates to local businesses.

It's important to note, this isn't a subscription to read the site. Our stories remain free to read. This is a voluntary subscription with benefits (and we'll add benefits as it grows).

Join via PayPal below, or for annual and one-time memberships paid by check, click here to download this form (monthly, recurring payment memberships must be via PayPal or credit card.) To pay by credit card, use the form, or call (585) 250-4118.

Vinyl Sticks welcomes Adam Lowder as their New Graphic Designer!

If you have had a sign or vinyl graphics professionally created in the Batavia area within the last 15 years, odds are pretty good that you have worked with Adam Lowder. Adam has been working with patrons in Western New York, creating signs, banners, magnets, and vehicle layouts since 1999. With familiarity of all aspects in the sign and vinyl graphics’ field, and a true passion for this line of work, Adam is ready to assist you.

“Here at Vinyl Sticks, no project is too big or too small,” Adam explains. “Whether you are looking for a small sign to stick in your yard, a few window stickers to promote your organization, or to do a complete vinyl wrap on your company van, Vinyl Sticks will do the job right. We have the ability to take any vehicle and turn it into a driving billboard.”

Adam joins Joe Bradt at Vinyl Sticks, who has been the head of operations since the company opened in October of 2012. Joe is a third-generation sign craftsman. Growing up around his grandfather’s and father’s sign businesses, Joe adds plenty of years of experience to Vinyl Sticks.

Vinyl Sticks is a company for everybody, not just businesses. Although they do create a lot of yard signs for businesses to advertise their services, and specialize in vehicle designs, big and small, they also make every day birthday banners, welcome-home banners, campsite signs, car decals, stickers and much more.

"At Vinyl Sticks we are using state-of-the-art printers and software to create stunning graphics.  We use a wide-format printer which allows us to print directly onto a variety of media surfaces, such as banners and vehicle wraps. We have graphics that allow you to advertise on glass, while still being able to see out of the glass.

"We have graphics that can turn your silver truck into a pink or camouflage truck. Graphics that allow you to advertise on walls, on the floor, and even on brick walls, and because we are creating the graphics ourselves, it is very cost-effective. Our prices are very competitive.”

Vinyl Sticks offers free estimates, free consultation, and of course design, production and installation services. Feel free to visit Adam and Joe at Vinyl Sticks, located at 23 Ganson Ave. in Batavia, NY. Off of Route 63, turn onto Evans Street; go past the Falleti Ice Arena, and at the stop sign go straight onto Ganson Avenue. Vinyl Sticks will be on your right.

You may also contact Adam or Joe by calling: 585-300-4307 or 877-456-4755.

During the Oatka Festival, we had a booth set up and were signing up new members for The Batavian Club. Thanks to all who joined. It's a big help.

Six people told us they wanted to join, but didn't have money or a credit card with them and a couple of people said explicitly they would rather join through PayPal. This post, as much as anything, is for them.

To be clear about why we're doing The Batavian Club. This isn't about selling discounts to businesses, though we do that, it's about reaching out to the people who read The Batavian every day and appreciate what we do, to make a small contribution to help us build a sustainable business. Advertising alone is not enough. We need reader support. Think of this as a voluntary subscription for all the great news you get online from The Batavian.

So, please use the options below and join today.

TO JOIN: Use PayPal buttons below, or to pay by check (annual only) or credit card, click here to download form. Or call (585) 250-4118 to pay by credit card.

The Landmark Society of Genesee County presents the House and Garden Tour. This event will take place on Sunday, July 14, from 12 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and include dessert reception, door prizes and a presentation by landscape designer Tim Richley! Tim has designed landscapes for some of the most beautiful gardens in and around the Batavia and Buffalo areas and will share his expertise with attendees.

Tickets can be purchased at St. James Episcopal Church 585-343-6802 or at Harrington's Produce (in Batavia) 585-343-0805. Tickets will be available the morning of the tour at St. James Church only, beginning at 11 a.m.

Some of the homes featured on the tour:

  • Jason and Anna Molino’s 1915 Vernon Ave. home has flower and vegetable gardens; their sunroom will be open for viewing.
  • Brenda Fox’s home on Angling Road in East Pembroke has extensive gardens and a pond. Brenda likes to color code her gardens.
  • Diane and Keith Boeheim’s home and gardens on Violet Lane: The house has arts and crafts influences. Diane is a collector of frogs and fairies for her garden and teapots in her home. There is a pergola over the back patio.
  • Jennifer and Richard Dunn, 226 State St.; their 1904 home, which will be open for viewing, is distinguished by its circular staircase tower and curved dormers.
  • Dennis Wood and Jenny Myers on 3323 W. Main Road. This unique home built in 1944 was originally owned by Batavia nurseryman Jerry Wallace. It combines elements of local craftspersons with classic homage to Frank Lloyd Wright.
  • Georgia Childs and Paul Freeman’s 1944 home sits on a corner lot. These owners have transformed it into a welcoming and semi-private garden retreat.
  • Debbie and Mike Barone’s 1948 home has an arbor with climbing clematis which is the gateway to their peaceful backyard.
  • Susan Wakefield’s home has winding gardens that create beautiful views and her clever use of planters create balance.
  • Carol and Dick Queal and Sharon and Bob Gray are neighbors on Fargo Road. Bob is also a master gardener. Come and enjoy all these two gardens have to offer.

Wines for Humanity is growing here in WNY, and we need more Wine Advisors! If you’re a wine enthusiast and would like to start a home business, Wines for Humanity may offer the type of business opportunity you’re looking for.

About Wines for Humanity:
Wines for Humanity was founded in 2007 by Anton Steinhart, fulfilling a desire to help prevent homelessness in America in families with children. He believed that the concept of wine appreciation and education through wine tastings could be paired with his mission. Sarah Veazey, our very own senior wine advisor, promotes exclusive wines at private wine tastings and charitable events. Every tasting event results in a donation to our local charity chosen by Sarah, known as WNY Catholic Charities, to help prevent homelessness. Sarah started with the company when she moved back to New York from Ohio in November of 2012, and has grown the business faster than she can handle, and is in need of wine advisors.

What does a Wine Advisor for Wines for Humanity do?
Wine advisors conduct in-home wine tastings. They provide background information on each wine that is tasted as well as guide the guests through the basic steps of wine tasting. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of this amazing opportunity! Currently we are growing in the area and need new Wine Advisors! If you are interested in joining our company please feel free to e-mail your resume to Sarah Veazey at: [email protected]
