Girls Scouts Join-a-thon at Batavia Service Center -- free slime, cocoa and cookies

Girl Scouts of Western New York (GSWNY) will host a 12-hour membership drive called the Girl Scout Join-a-Thon and offer unique incentives to both adults and girls who register on Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Throughout the day, GSWNY will take on-the-spot registrations over the phone and in-person registrations during our normal business hours.

Roberts Wesleyan Chorale performs free public concert at Batavia First Presbyterian Church, features variety of styles, cultures, eras and languages

Roberts Wesleyan Chorale is will perform a special live concert in Batavia starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, at the Batavia First Presbyterian Church, located at 300 E. Main St.

The public is welcome to attend this free concert entitled "Lead Kindly Light."

The Rochester-based Chorale will perform beautiful songs featuring diverse styles, cultures, eras and languages.

The following day, on Friday, the Chorale leaves on their Florida Tour.

Time: 1 to 3 p.m.

Fee: $5/person, max $15/family, snowshoe rental included.

Handicapped accessible: No

Track the secret lives of wild animals and discover how they survive the year’s harshest season! Hike is about two miles long over moderate terrain. Snowshoes may be used, weather permitting, and are provided or you may bring your own. No previous experience needed!

Dates: Saturday, 18th

Time: 7 to 9 p.m.

Fee: $5/person, max $15/family

Handicapped accessible: No

Preregistration required, call 585-344-1122!

Enjoy the beauty of the forest at night on a hike through meadows, along creeks, and into woodlands. Hikes begin and end at Pavilion A on Raymond Road.

Choose between a hike about two miles long over easy terrain or a hike about three miles long over moderate terrain. Both hikes include snacks by a warm fire.

Issues of housing instability, maintaining gainful employment, and obtaining needed healthcare are not limited to large metropolitan areas, they can occur to people living anywhere.

With this in mind, Batavia’s premier advocacy agency for people with disabilities, Independent Living of the Genesee Region (ILGR) plus the Homeless Alliance of WNY (HAWNY), working with other community organizations, will be available to those in need in Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties as part of Project Connect on Thursday Jan. 30.

CANCELLED: Debut 'Crafting for Critters' bazaar at Batavia Downs, proceeds benefit GC shelter animals

CANCELLED: The debut "Crafting for Critters" bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, at Batavia Downs Gaming & Hotel. All proceeds benefit homeless pets at the Genesee County Animal Shelter.

Admission is free. The event is hosted by Volunteers for Animals.

New Year at Blue Pearl Yoga Open House -- come explore wellness opportunities

The New Year at Blue Pearl Yoga Open House will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Come and explore the many opportunities for wellness and check out our beautiful yoga space located in the former Masonic Temple on Main Street in Downtown Batavia.

Try out different styles of yoga and meet our teachers, as we will be offering free 20-minute Discovery classes throughout the day in our two yoga rooms. Or you're welcome to just hang out in the Art Gallery or Reception Room, and enjoy some light refreshments and good company.

Kim Smith, candidate for NYS Senate District 61, brings 'listening tour' to Richmond library to hear from GC voters

Kim Smith, a third-generation Rochester resident, has announced her campaign for New York State’s 61st Senate District.

Smith holds a Master’s of Public Administration degree from Brockport College and spent more than 25 years with the Monroe County Department of Public Health. Her innovative policy work to improve access to care gained local, state and national attention.

Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters Artists' Reception and Award Ceremony in Pittsford Barnes & Noble

The Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters will open its 15th Annual Art Show beginning Jan. 3rd at Pittsford Barnes & Noble’ Community Room. It is located at 3349 Monroe Ave.

This competitive, judged and juried show will display about 90 original paintings recently created throughout the Northeast. The plein air show runs through Friday, Jan. 31st.
