GCC's History Club fall lecture series: Live historical portrayal of Abigail Adams, one of the nation's Founding Mothers

The History Club at Genesee Community College has released an exciting lineup for the Fall 2019 Historical Horizons Lecture Series. This series is designed to educate, entertain and help stimulate the sharing of knowledge, discussion and learning all centered around the importance of history.

All Wednesday lectures in this series begin at 7 p.m. in room T102 of the Conable Technology Building, Batavia. All events in the Historical Horizons Series are free and open to the public.

Renowned Onondaga Turtle Clan storyteller speaks in Oakfield on their influence on U.S. democracy

Tonight the Oakfield Historical Society will offer a free special presentation with an Onondaga Turtle Clan storyteller and educator at the Oakfield Community and Government Center.

At 7 p.m., Perry Ground will speak on the "Haudenosaunee Influence on American Democracy."

Everyone is welcome to attend.

This engaging and informative talk will focus on how the founders of the United States were influenced by ideas that had been a parrt of the Haudensausee Native Americans for hundreds of years.

Encompass Genesee hosts debut get-together at Kiwanis Park, food provided, also chance to win $50 Visa card

Encompass Genesee is a Corfu-based, nonprofit organization whose mission it is to provide social activities and employment training for people with developmental disabilities.

They will hold their debut get-together event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, in Kiwanis Park in the Town of Batavia. Food will be provided!

All are invited to come out and enjoy an evening of fun making new friends.

Attendees will get a chance to win a $50 Visa Gift Card!

Kiwanis Park is located at 3808 W. Main Street Road.

Workshop on getting loved ones sober -- at Northgate church, North Campus

A workshop for individuals in recovery and their friends, family and allies -- based on the book "Get Your Loved One Sober: Alternatives to Nagging, Pleading, and Threatening" by Robert J. Meyers and Brenda L. Wolfe -- will be held Wednesday (Sept. 4) at Northgate Free Methodist Church.

Time is 6 to 8 p.m. Address is 8160 Bank Street Road, Batavia (North Campus). Presenter is Pastor Vern Saile.

Session 2 -- Open House at South Byron fire hall to learn about solar energy facility planned for Byron

The community is cordially invited to attend an informational open house Tuesday, Sept. 10 for the Excelsior Energy Center, a 280-megawatt solar energy generating facility with 20 megawatts of energy storage proposed in the Town of Byron.

At the open house to be held at the South Byron fire hall, information about the project will be displayed on large poster boards.

16th annual Fur Ball to benefit homeless pets

The 16th annual Fur Ball to benefit the Spay/Neuter Program at the Genesee County Animal Shelter will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Ascension Parish's Slomba Hall, 17 Sumner St., Batavia.

There will be food and beverages and basket raffles and silent auctions.

Tickets are $25; tickets for children 12 and under are $15. Tables of 10 are available for $250.

Richmond Reads Author Event: Silas House & 'Southernmost' -- Talk and Book Signing

Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at Richmond Memorial Library

Author Silas House will join us for a reading from his newest novel "Southernmost" -- our selected book for Richmond Reads -- and the book will be available for sale. He will sign copies of it. All are welcome to attend this free event!

On Thursday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. watch the documentary "Hillbilly," which was produced and written by our Richmond Reads author Silas House. The author of our Richmond Reads novel "Southernmost" also appears in the film.

"Hillbilly" examines the iconic hillbilly image in media and culture and it won Best Documentary Feature at the L.A. Film Festival in 2018.

BHS Blue Devils Varsity Baseball Team -- 2019 Section V champs -- honored at Muckdogs' game, fireworks, raffles & more

On Saturday, Aug. 31, the Muckdogs franchise will honor the 2019 Boys Varsity Batavia Baseball Team on their Section V victory on the field before the start of the game.

The Muckdogs will play against Auburn on Saturday night; game time is 7:05.

The Blue Devils shut out Geneva June 1, winning 9-0 in the Class B1 title game. It was their first sectional title since 1998.

Everyone is encouraged to come out and show their support of the BHS varsity baseball team in recognition of their victory.

Artist Shauna Blake gives hands-on demo of alcohol inks at GO ART!

The Batavia Society of Artists is hosting artist Shauna Blake from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10th at GO ART!, inside Seymour Place, 201 E. Main St., in Downtown Batavia.

Blake will be doing a hands-on alcohol ink demonstration.

At HLOM: Unveiling of two paintings by Anthony E. Terrell, NYC-based artist from BHS Class of '67

The Holland Land Office Museum is proud to announce on Friday, Oct. 4th, the official unveiling of two new paintings by artist Anthony E. Terrell.

He is a Batavia native now residing in New York City, and a 1967 graduate of Batavia High School.

The two paintings “Listening to Couperin” ("artist & wife enjoying") and “Big Horned Sheep Jumping Fence of Time” are recent works of Terrell's, which were graciously donated to the museum to further promote and expand the collection of works by local artists.

Bergen Historical Society: Learn about the Cook family history, at Bergen library

At the Byron-Bergen Public Library, located at 13 S. Lake Ave. in Bergen, the Bergen Historical Society will meet beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5th, in the Library Meeting Room.
 
The public is invited to hear a presentation by Gina Schelemanow on the history of the Cook family of Byron and Clarendon. Refreshments will be served following the program.

Musical Memories concert at City Church to benefit Crossroads House

The 11th annual Musical Memories concert to benefit Crossroads House will be held at City Church on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The church is located at 210 E. Main St. in Downtown Batavia.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and music starts at 6:30.

Cost is $5 for general seating and $10 for reserved seating.

There will be a "Mega Raffle" on site.

They will battling it out to see who will raise the most money in tips to help fund GO ART! and the fabulous events they offer.

This is paired with it being FABULOUS Thursday so McLean would be happy to talk with you regarding all that is going on with GLOW OUT! and different events that will be coming up throughout the year!
