Massena: James C. Murphy, age 99 passed away peacefully on June 4, 2020 at the Massena Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. The family has entrusted funeral arrangements to the care and direction of the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena. Funeral services for James will be held at the convenience of the family with a graveside service held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, in Batavia, NY at a later date.

James was born on June 6, 1920, in Buffalo, NY. He is the first of two children born to the late James E. and Anna (Scheur) Murphy. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Viola (Neth, Wahls) Murphy formerly of Batavia, NY. James is also survived by his children: Sheilah Murphy of Seattle, WA; Kevin and Deborah Murphy, of Gloversville, NY; Arline Murphy, of Massena, NY; Nora and Bruce Murphy-Kotteman, of Princess Anne, MD; Deborah and Brian White-Sallee of Reno, NV; Arthur and Carla Wahls of Batavia, NY; and David and Robin Wahls, of Doswells, VA. James is also survived by seven grandchildren: Seana Murphy, of Salem, OR; Christopher and Noelle Murphy of Bennington, VT; Cassandra Murphy of Cromwell, CT; Kelly Conners of Massena, NY; Andrea and Robert Falkowski of East Bethany, NY; James and Tessali Wahls of Owego, NY; and Hillary Wahls, of Doswell, VA. He has 11 great-grandchildren: Dylan Murphy, Meghan Mills, William Murphy, James Murphy, Olivia Murray, Owynn Conners, Logan Wahls, Calayla Sacdalan, Wesley Falkowski, Emmaline Falkowski, and James J.A. Wahls. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Edward; and a grandson, Drew Wahls.

As a teenager he attended Fosdick-Masten Park High School in Buffalo until starting work for Western Union in 1936. Beginning in 1938 he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, stationed in Nevada and Idaho, in part as a forest fire fighter. He often remarked that the years spent with the C.C.C. were among his most formative and even 80 years later was moved by the memory of those who were lost. Following his time with the C.C.C. he entered the United States Army in February 7, 1942 to serve his country proudly during World War II.

During the war, he served with the 88th Infantry Division in North Africa and Italy. In Italy he was transferred to 5th Army City Command Section, under the 5th Army Headquarters, where he served establishing provisional governments in liberated cities. He was honorably discharged from the service on December 12, 1945. 

In 1948 he began his career with General Motors at the gear and axle plant in Buffalo. He transferred to the engine plant in Tonawanda four years later. Then in 1959 he and his then-wife Joan, and their four children moved to Massena where he began work at the Chevrolet aluminum foundry. He worked continuously until his retirement in 1987. The following year he was brought on as a consultant in the creation of the Saturn Corporation in Detroit, MI. James later returned to consult for GM from 1993-1996, and 1998-2004.

James loved all sports, but had a particular affinity for horse racing, basketball, and football. He was an avid bowler, serving as Secretary and Treasurer of the Sunday night mixed doubles league at the Seaway Bowl for 15 years. He enjoyed bicycle racing and table tennis, and went on to compete in the New York State Senior Games in 1990 and 1991, where he won gold medals in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races, and a bronze medal in table tennis. In 1992 he competed in the National Senior Games in Syracuse. Throughout his life James loved singing, story-telling, and jokes and he loved sharing these with his family and friends. Whether in the barracks, at the bowling alley, at the GM Retirees’ luncheons, on several cruises with his wife Viola, during Friday nights at the Village Inn, as a member of the Sacred Heart Choir, or when he was surrounded by family, James could always be relied on for laughter and song. It’s hard to imagine a finer bequest than that.

Gordon R. Pringle Jr. “Corky”, 68 of Batavia passed away unexpectedly on Friday (June 5, 2020) at his residence.

He was born May 27, 1952 in Buffalo, NY, a son of the late Gordon Pringle and Pearl Kingsley.

Corky was a former manager at Koolatron prior to his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. He was also a member of Godfrey Pond.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Sutherland Pringle of Batavia. Children, Edward (Tricia) Levinstein of Corfu, Tara (Michael Moyles) Levinstein of Pembroke, Elizabeth (Ron Barkie) Levinstein of California and Emily Pringle of Batavia. Grandchildren, Benjamin, William and Max Levinstein, Charlie Liongson and Mary Barkie. Brother, Keith (Judy) Pringle of Caledonia and Sister, Deb (Dan) Heale.

He was the brother of the late Earnest Heep.

Batavia - Roger I. Francis, 62, of Batavia, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Roger was born January 29, 1958, in Batavia, a son of Alice (Sanderson) Francis of Batavia and the late Irving Francis.

Roger graduated in 1977 from Batavia High School.  He had a passion for motorcycles and movies.  He was a member with his brother in Rochester Street Machine.

Surviving along with his mother, Alice (Sanderson) Francis of Batavia, are his loving wife of 20 years, Faith (Rowland) Francis of Batavia; brother, Paul Francis of Florida; a sister, Doreen (Beni) DaSilva of Maine; Faith's siblings and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his father, Irving Francis, Roger is predeceased by a niece, Jill Dos Santos.

Roger's funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (June 9) at Stafford Rural Cemetery, 8971 Transit Road, Stafford.  Those wishing to attend are asked to wear a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Byron - Kevin P. Curran, 67, of Byron, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, at his home in Byron.

Kevin was born April 21, 1953, in Brooklyn, a son of the late John and Joanne (Sendrowski) Curran, Sr.

A veteran with the United States Navy, Kevin loved his cats and dogs, cooking and spending time with his family.  He worked sales for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Julie (Thompson) Curran of Byron; his daughter, Kim Curran; his stepdaughter, Adrienne Gunderson; stepson, Austin Kendall; brothers, John (Mary Lou), Dennis (Nancy), Patrick (Joyce), Mike (Chrissie) and Tim (Audrey) and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Kevin is a brother of the late Duane Curran, Tracey Curran and Jerry (Mary Ellen "Lolly") Curran.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

James H. Laskey, Jr, 92, born in Medina NY on October 13, 1927 and who lived in Elba, NY since 1967 with his wife, Virginia, died June 2, 2020.

He was the son of the late James H. Laskey, Sr. and Katherine V. Wisnock Laskey of Medina.

Mr. Laskey was raised on a farm and later worked at Curtiss Wright, an aircraft factory near Buffalo, where he helped build the P-40 (The famous Flying Tiger Plane).  When he turned 18 he joined the Navy and took part in Operation Crossroads in 1946, which involved 2 Atomic Bomb tests in the Marshall Islands, Bikini Atoll. His ship was the U.S.S. AJAX, AR-6, but he also served aboard the U.S.S. Belerphon, ARL-31, a converted LST. While aboard the Belerphon, he received an oral commendation from his captain for spotting a floating mine, which would have meant almost certain disaster for his ship and shipmates. He received the WWII Victory Medal, The Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged in 1949.

After discharge, he worked for Hill Brothers Greenhouse Construction of Shelby and later at Meiser Chevrolet Dealership in Oakfield as a Certified Body and Fender Technician for collision repair.

He was a longtime member of the Newstead VFW Post #3180; Batavia American Legion Post #0332; NAAV (National Assoc. of Atomic Veterans) and the National Rifle Association.

Jim enjoyed playing the guitar and mandolin and sang country and bluegrass songs. He loved deer hunting and trout fishing and was also a classic antique car enthusiast and a member of the Lone Wolf Cruisers for many years.

Along with his wife, Mr. Laskey is survived by one son, Jesse Laskey of San Diego, CA; “adopted daughter Marcy Prentice and Son in -law, Bruce Prentice; two grandsons, Bruce III and Jordan.  Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Victor Laskey of Albion.

Joan D. (Waclawski) Torcello, 96, beloved wife of the late Ralph F. “Rick” Torcello, died June 1, 2020 at Crest Manor Nursing Home in Fairport, NY.  Mrs. Torcello was born February 8, 1924, a daughter of the late Anthony and Anna Waclawski of Bethany Center & Buffalo, NY.  She was a Business Major graduate in 1941 from Riverside High School in Buffalo and upon graduation, worked first as an aircraft riveter and then as account clerk at Bell Aircraft Corporation. 

During WWII Joan moved to Washington, D.C. to work as an account clerk with the Navy Department and later for the Veteran’s Administration in D.C. and in Buffalo after the war.   She and Rick were married on October 19, 1946 after his discharge from the Naval Armed Guard that year.

Joan continued to be employed over the years in accounting and office management for Roy Porter Produce & Brokerage in Elba for over 12 years.  She retired from the Batavia Holiday Inn in 1986 after 14 years as their bookkeeper and accountant.  Over her lifetime she was a member of the Stafford Planning Board, the Republican Stafford and County Committees, the Byron-Bergen PTA, serving as president, and the Byron Bergen Advisory and Educational Study Committees.

She enjoyed volunteering at the St. Jerome Hospital Gift Shop and the Batavia Senior Center.  She also participated as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Glenn S. Loomis Post #332, Batavia American Legion.  With her husband, she was an avid summer Silver Lake camper and loved showing their antique automobiles at area car shows.  A devout Catholic, she was a member of Ascension Parish/Sacred Heart Church and former member of the Altar & Rosary Society.

She is survived by her four children, Patricia A. (Joseph) Catalina of Valatie, NY; Marcia A. (Joseph) Rice of Pittsburgh, PA; Ronald R. (Mary Cain) Torcello of Churchville, NY; and Robin J. (Stephen) Hodownes of Honeoye Falls, NY; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by sisters Mary Dombrowski, Sophie Adolf, Stella Kawacz, Frances Polec, Julia Slusar, Helen Hunt and Josephine Mager, and by brothers Joseph Waclawski, John Waclawski and Walter Waclawski.

Private services and funeral mass will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s cemetery.

  Florence C. Merle, 105, of Attica, passed away peacefully Monday, June 1, 2020 at Wyoming County Skilled Nursing Facility in Warsaw. She was born on September 28, 1914 in Warsaw to the late Mark (Ruth Cox) Chamberlain. Mrs. Merle is preceded in death by her husband Arthur E. Merle June 19, 1995; daughter-in-law Julie Merle; siblings Carrie (Richard) Smith, Agnes (Andrew) Ellicott, Ray (Arlene) Chamberlain and Paul (Margaret) Chamberlain. 

Florence graduated from Warsaw High School. She took a trip to the West Coast with her best friends Ora and Bernice Putney, in 1936. They drove a Model A and pulled a trailer that her father built to stay in.

She was very active in 4-H, especially the poultry project. Florence’s first job was secretary at the Wyoming County Cooperative Extension/4-H. She met her husband, Arthur, while both were very active in 4-H and together they were 4-H leaders for nearly 100 years! They got married in a leap year – Arthur thought it was a great idea since there was an extra day that year. They had been married for 55 years when Arthur passed away in 1995. They moved to a house on Route 98 in Attica and spent the rest of their lives there. Florence worked with Arthur on the farm and helped develop the maple business. She packed tons of maple sugar candy over her life.

Florence is a lifetime member of the Farm Bureau. She received the Hubbell Award in 1998 recognizing her for furthering education in maple production. She has been an active member of the EUB and Trinity United Methodist Church for 80 years. Florence was well known for her wonderful home-baked rolls and maple-bacon baked beans that were common at church fundraisers. Florence cared for both of Arthur’s parents and her own father in their latter years. She supported her children in their 4-H and FFA projects and school work. She was kind, quiet woman who lived her faith and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.  

Mrs. Merle is survived by her beloved children, Phyllis (Charles) Couture of West Valley, NY; Bruce (Nancy) Merle of Attica, Milton Merle and Mary Kautz of Attica; Douglas (Sara) Merle of Kendall; Lyle (Dottie) Merle of Attica; daughter-in-law Marilee Merle of Attica; 15 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.  

A private Graveside Service will be held for the immediate family, there will be a Memorial Service at a later date. She will be laid to rest in Forest Hill Cemetery, Attica.

  Nancy A. Boss, 84 of Attica, passed away peacefully June 1, 2020 at Friendly Home in Rochester.  She was born in Batavia, on September 29, 1935 to the late Burton (Dorothy Waite) Lewis. She is preceded in death by a sister Patricia Treat and brother-in-law Clarence Rich.

Mrs. Boss worked for many years at George King Boss Insurance Agency. She was a member of Wyoming County Chamber of Commerce, longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Attica and the Attica Golf Club. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her beloved husband Ivan “Ike” Boss of Attica; children Brenda (Thomas) Parkes of Victor; Richard (Cheryl) Norton of Murphy, NC; Randall (Tilma) Norton of Palm Bay, FL; step-children Michelle (Michael) Perkins of Pavilion; Philip Boss of East Bethany; Luanne (Neil) Jacobs of Batavia; sister Sara Rich of Sebastian, FL; brother-in-law Norman Treat of Auburndale, FL; 15 grandchildren, 18 grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours, a Graveside Service will be held for the immediate family. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest in Forest Hill Cemetery in Attica.

Corfu - Dean R. Lawrence, 89, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2020.

Dean was born December 4, 1930, to Harold and Jessie Lawrence of Attica, NY and attended Attica Central School, graduating in 1948.

Following graduation, Dean worked in a Golf Pro Shop in Bradford, PA, then joined and served in the United States Navy from 1950 - 1954. After returning home, he managed Newell’s Dairy in Attica for several years and then managed Genesee Farms Dairy in Batavia. When Corfu constructed their new sewer treatment plant, Dean was Supervisor of the Corfu Water and Sewer Department Plant until his retirement.

Dean was a life long member of the Attica Golf Course. He loved playing the game with his friends and enjoyed competing in the many area tournaments. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, yard work and especially spending time with his grandchildren. Dean also enjoyed watching baseball, football, hockey and golf on TV and truly enjoyed his 20 plus winters in Florida.

Dean is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sue; his daughter Laural; grandsons David Lawrence, Nicholas, Matthew and Paul Ianni; a brother, James Lawrence of Alexander and many nieces and nephews.

Dean is predeceased by his parents Jessie and Harold Lawrence; brother, Harold; sisters, Marian, Ina, Lois and Janet; a son, Christopher; granddaughter Angela and grandson Lyle.

There are no services at this time because of COVID 19 restrictions. A graveside memorial service will be held at a future date.

Memorials in memory of Dean may be made to the charity of the Donor’s Choice.

Stafford - Karen (Balduf) King, 77 of Stafford, NY, daughter of the late John and Gladys Balduf, passed away in her home, Friday, May 29, 2020, after a long battle with ovarian cancer.
She is survived by her son Brian (Christine) King, sister JoAnne (Paul) Tenney, five grandchildren, Christopher, LeAnne (Peter), Brittany (Matt), AJ and Cody. One great grandson, PJ and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Richard (Rip) King, and daughter Colleen King.
Karen started her career at Sylvania where she was a secretary for 17 years. She finished her career and retired from the NYS Trooper Barracks in Clarence where she was a secretary for 25 years.
She enjoyed making gifts for the special people in her life with her sewing and crafting. She loved working in her flower gardens and playing cards with family and friends.
A celebration of life and memorial will be held at a later date.

Clarence - Isabel M. Blanchard, 93, formerly of Corfu, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Isabel was born in Batavia, a daughter of the late Cornelius and Olive Staebell Donovan. She was predeceased by her husband Lavern Blanchard.

Isabel worked for many years at the E.N. Rowell Box Factory in Batavia and retired from the Genesee County Nursing Home as a nurse’s aide.

There are no calling hours. Private burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Corfu, NY.

Akron ~ Laurence E. Hanley Jr., age 82, formerly of LeRoy, passed away Thursday afternoon (May 28, 2020) at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Williamsville.

    

 He was born November 12, 1937 in Fulton, N.Y., a son of the late Laurence and Mary Welch Hanley Sr.

     Larry will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and dear friend to many.  He was a proud U. S. Navy veteran, having served 19 years and then worked for the U. S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 24 years. He was a member of the American Legion in Akron and the Akron First United Methodist Church.  Larry enjoyed Sunday dinners with his family, the NY Yankees, Buffalo Bills, bowling, along with eating peanuts and drinking beer.

     He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 4 years, Mary Fralick Hanley; his children, Brian (Tammy) Hanley of Batavia, Teresa (John) Phelps of FL, Linda (John) Burger of Caledonia and Wayne (Annie) Hanley of LeRoy; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Hanley, along with many nieces and nephews.

     In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife of 54 years, Carol Filio Hanley, two sons, Dean Joseph Hanley and Kenneth Hanley, and his brother, Bernie Hanley.

     A public memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Batavia - Catherine E. (Koontz) Epperson, wife of William R. Epperson (deceased 1984) and mother of the late Willden D. Epperson (deceased 1986), daughter of the late Jacob Koontz and Marie G. (Bettis) Pendleton was born in Ventnor, New Jersey on July 24, 1930.

She passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 25, 2020 in Batavia, where she lived with her daughter’s family for 5 years.

Catherine spent most of her life living in South Florida where she was a friend to many who knew her. She will be remembered as a caring and giving person.

She is survived by her children; Jack Epperson and his wife Jennifer, Willdeanna Epperson Parkhurst and her husband Bob as well as her grandchildren Bob Jr. and Brice and her step daughter Iris Fortney. She also leaves her nieces and nephew, Mary, Catherine and Jacob from her brother Jacob F. Koontz.

ESTHER JEANETTE GRAY ~ Age 67, of Elba, went home to be with our Lord and Savior early Wednesday morning May 27, 2020 at home while under the care of Hospice and her loving family. She was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on April 26, 1953 to the late William and June (Reetz) Miller also preceded in death by siblings, Keneth R. Miller, William Miller, Roger Miller, and Donna Kapan.

Esther graduated from Genesee Community College as a Registered Nurse after raising her children and worked at many area nursing homes as a Nurse Supervisor. Esther was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Elba for the last 48 years, teaching Sunday School, Bible Club and Vacation Bible School for the Junior Church. She also volunteered on the social committee, in the children’s nursery and as the missionary secretary at the church.

Esther loved knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Her handcrafted items were made for many church activities, All Babies Cherished, Elba Central School Glove Drive and Operation Shoe Box Ministry.

Surviving is her beloved husband of 48 years, David Lee Gray of Elba; loving daughter, Dorothy Gray De Roque of Elba and her children, Angelica R. (Celso Vasquez) Acosta, Emiliano Acosta and Guillermo Roque Gray; Esther and David raised Lisa Hodgins and Dorothy (Patrick) McNutt; several nieces and nephews also survive.

PEGGY S. NORWAY ~ Age 50, of Elba, passed peacefully on Tuesday May 26, 2020 at home while under the care of Hospice, surrounded by her loving family following a courageous battle with colon cancer. Peggy was born on June 8, 1969 in Batavia, NY, a daughter of the late Ivan and Joan (Kearns) Boyce.

Peggy enjoyed baking, doing crafts and just sitting on the deck enjoying life and her family, but most of all was her love of Christmas so much so that by the day after she would begin planning and counting down for the next holiday season.

Peggy is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Larry Norway of Elba; beloved children, Michael Norway and Amanda Norway both at home; siblings, Marty (Bonnie) Boyce, Marvin (Judy Shedlock) Boyce, Steve (Linda) Boyce, Brian (Chita) Boyce, Craig (Sue) Boyce, Dan (Cheryl) Boyce, Dawn Boyce, Laura Boyce, Carol Boyce and Brenda Boyce; father & mother-in-law, Mick (Fern) Norway of Elba; brother-in-law, Dan (Sarah) Norway; sister-in-law, Tracy (Mike) Lyons; dear friends, Nadine(Ken) Snyder along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews and cousins.

Due to the on-going COVID-19 Epidemic a Christmas in July celebration of Peggy’s life will be held this coming July 4^th weekend at the family home in Elba.
