Yesterday morning, City fire along with a group of volunteers from other departments in the county, participated in water rescue training at DeWitt Recreation Area in Batavia.

Apartment complex ablaze on Starr Road in Pavilion

A six-unit apartment complex is reportedly on fire at 10980 Starr Road, Pavilion. Unknown if any occupants are inside. Pavilion and Le Roy fire departments are responding.

Heather Lynn Perdock, 30, of LeRoy, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday December 4, 2016 at Unity Hospital in Rochester due to complications from her pregnancy. She was born on November 18, 1986 in Batavia to Gerald and Dawn (Eschenlauer) Yarington. She is predeacsed by her step-father Gerald Yarington Sr.

Heather was a stay at home mom who loved her children unconditionally. She loved animals, especially elephants and cows. Heather loved to go camping, being around the fire with her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by all that knew her.

She is survived by her children; Zachary Fetterly, Victoria Yarington and her baby Gavin R. Perry; mother Dawn Yarington of E. Bethany, father and stepmother Gerald (Tammy) Yarington Jr. of East Aurora; siblings Greg Yarington of Darien, Russell Yarington of Orchard Park, Monica Yarington of Orchard Park and Gerald Yarington III of East Aurora along with several step siblings; uncles Donald (Rita) Eschenlauer of FL., Ronald (Louann) Eschenlauer of Dansville and Robert (Theresa) Eschenlauer of Batavia and her aunt Robin (Walter Hale) Eschenlauer of Oakfield.

Dawn Marie (Palmer) Piasta

Batavia ~ Dawn Marie (Palmer) Piasta, age 67, passed away at home on Thursday, February 23, 2023.

  She was born October 8, 1955, in Cuba NY to the late Francis Palmer and Barbara Harter, and later, Don Bradford, her step-father. Dawn was the oldest of six children; Joel, Kit, Carrie, Marge, and Joyce. Dawn is predeceased by her brother, Joel and survived by the rest of the siblings. Dawn had four children whom she is survived by; Bethany Palmer, Michael Piasta, April Palmer and Ceciely Palmer along with two grandchildren; Bianca Gregory and Ava Freeman.

     Dawn enjoyed reading and was an avid gardener, as well as a phenomenal quilter, spending a lot her free time sewing . She loved the outdoors and had a special place in her heart for animals, once saving 4 baby squirrels in her front yard. Dawn also enjoyed cooking and baking, a wonderful talent of hers. She was a resilient woman and cared deeply in her own way for those around her.

Evelyn E. Macomber

Evelyn E. Macomber, 93 of Attica, passed away peacefully on Sunday January 24, 2016 at Episcopal Church Home in Rochester. She was born January 4, 1923 in Buffalo to the late Henry (Virginia White) Ertel. She is preceded in death by her brothers Richard, James and Ned Ertel.

Evelyn was employed at Attica High School as a secretary for 25 years. Mrs. Macomber was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and the Rebekkas. She enjoyed traveling and being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years Floyd D. Macomber of Attica; sons Elliot (Joanne) Macomber of Spencerport; Scott (Joanne) Macomber of Fulton; grandchildren Timothy (Jennifer), Gregory (Karen), Chelsey, Mara Macomber; Juliet Brandt, Bethany St. Pierre, David (Kylie) Taylor and Trina Taylor. Great-grandchildren Sage, Lily, Ethan, Nolan, Isaac, Elijah, Hayden, Hailey and Hannah; sisters-in-law Beatrice and Elizabeth, brother-in-law Edwin along with several nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.She will be laid to rest in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Clarence Lathan

Batavia - Clarence Lathan, 86 of Batavia passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023 at United Memorial Medical Center. Surrounded by his loving family.

Clarence was born Saturday, February 20th, 1937 in Batavia, a son of the late Fred and Mildred (Hirsch) Lathan.

He enjoyed fishing, golf, gun shows, auctions, and spending time with friends and family. 

Clarence graduated from Alexander High school in 1955 and later married the love of his life, Judy Bortle, on May 28, 1971. He worked for many local farms and as a diesel mechanic for many years, finally retiring from Jones mechanical in Caledonia.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Judy Lathan; children, Calvin Lathan, Ron (Tammy) Lathan of Silver Lake, Kathy Lathan of Virginia, Stan (Lisa) Mosher of LeRoy, Colleen (Tim) Miller of Fillmore, and Karen (Jim) Perry of Corfu; 10 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

In death Clarence is reunited with his parents, Fred and Mildred Lathan; siblings, Lloyd Lathan, Norman Lathan, and Dorothy Staba.

Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at H.E. Turner & Co., Inc. Funeral Home, Batavia. Clarence's funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at H.E. Turner & Co., Inc., Batavia.  Burial will be in West Bethany Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.

Linden native crowned Miss New York State in Sunburst Pageant

Alexander High School graduate Fleur Remington (Class of 2013) was crowned Miss New York State in Syracuse on Sunday after winning the Sunburst Beauty Pageant there on Saturday.

Joseph A. Wolak

Joseph A. Wolak, 83 of Attica, died at his residence on Friday (January 15, 2016).

He was born in Buffalo, NY, a son of the late Joseph J. Wolak and Stephanie Wlodarczyk Wolak.

He retired from Attica Central School as a teacher of English and was Attica Town and Village Justice for over 17 years, retiring in November of 2015. An active outdoorsman, he taught DEC Hunter, Archery, and Trapper education courses for 20 years. He was active with dogs and held offices in several dog clubs. German Shorthaired Pointers were his favorite. He established Wag-Ae-Kennels and developed many champions and field winners. He was also an AKC Show and Field Judge.

Joseph served in the U.S. Air Force, was a member of the NRA, served on many community committees and groups including the Board of Directors of the Cooperative Extension of Wyoming County, and was a leader and longtime supporter of 4-H.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, B. Arlene Mast, daughter of the late Susan and Daniel Mast; Daughters, Nancy Gross of Pavilion and Karen (John) Brown of Batavia. Sons, Jeffrey (Vicki) Wolak of Bethany and Jonathan (Deborah) Wolak of Varysburg. Sister, Joan (Paul) Schaefer of Clarence and brother, Eugene (Patty) Wolak of Syracuse. Sister in-laws and brother in-laws, Mildred (late Carlton) Graff of Lyndonville, Mary (late Don) Penninger of NC, Doris Brand of Ohio, Carol (late James) Webster of Akron, NY, Ruth (Robert) Crane of Arkansas, Paul (Candy) Mast of SC and the late Alice (James) Hendry. 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren also survive.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 2-4pm at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, LLC, 2 BOGUE AVE., BATAVIA, NY. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Roswell Park Cancer Institute, American Heart Association or Hospice and Homecare of Wyoming County. Expressions of condolence may be shared with the family at: www.mcandrewfuneralhomes.net.
